Crusaders' 13th Super Rugby title: A tale of redemption and resilience
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — In Super Rugby, the more things change the more they remain the same.
A different competition this year with only 11 teams yielded a familiar result. The Christchurch-based Crusaders are champions for the 13th time and the eighth time in the last nine years.
The Hamilton-based Chiefs are runners-up for the third time in the last three finals.
This year familiarity didn't equal inevitability. The Chiefs went into the final as marginal favorites after sitting in first place for most of the season and finishing in that spot, as top-seeds for the playoffs.
Though they stumbled in the first playoff round, losing at home to the Auckland-based Blues, they advanced to the semifinals as the top-ranked losers and convincingly beat the ACT Brumbies in the semifinals.
But if ever there was a case of one team wanting it more, it was the Crusaders who were desperate to atone for their 2024 season in which, in their first year under head coach Rob Penney, they won only four matches and finished well outside their playoffs.
Penney was seen as lucky to keep his job. Other teams might have been more ruthless. But the Crusaders gave him a second chance and he atoned on Saturday with his first Super Rugby title.
The Crusaders' were determined to win for Penney, for their fans and in their last match at the 'temporary' stadium they have called home since the 2011 Christchurch earthquake destroyed their former headquarters at Lancaster Park.
The Chiefs were on the back foot from the start and though they trailed by only one point at halftime and then for 31 minutes in the second half, they were only hanging on.
The accuracy of the Crusaders' kicking game and the eagerness with which they chased kicks kept the Chiefs pinned mostly in their own half. They escaped twice and scored tries but spent the crucial final minutes of the match trapped within their own territory.
'It was a classic final, two great teams going at it and a small margin,' Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson said. 'The Crusaders did really well to win the halfway and play at the right end of the field.
'I felt we had some good attack when we got into their half, we put some good pressure on them but we just didn't play enough footy down there.'
The Chiefs did their best to send off head coach Clayton McMillan with his first Super Rugby title. In his five years in charge, McMillan has taken the Chiefs to the final three times and the semifinals twice. That followed a barren season under former British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland.
It wasn't to be. McMillan will leave New Zealand to coach Munster in Ireland without the trophy he deserves.
Close contests, uncertain future
Now, questions will be asked about what it all means for the competition. Already, there is contention about the lucky loser rule, introduced this season which allowed the Chiefs to reach the final after a playoff loss.
The tournament will continue next year with 11 teams but what of the future?
This season began with a number of high-scoring games in summer conditions and margins were typically close, indicating a tight competition. Moana Pasifika had its best-ever season under new captain Ardie Savea and only narrowly missed the playoffs.
'We've seen a whole lot of upsets, we've seen lots of hoodoos broken and then on the pitch I think the new rules and the work of the match officials have set it up to play some really entertaining and combative rugby,' Super Rugby boss Jack Mesley told Radio New Zealand. 'The stat was something like, I think we had 43 percent of games that were decided by only seven points or less.
'We saw the teams that were on the bottom of the ladder last year really change their fortunes. It was the closest competition in points since 2004 so I think a lot of those teams just got better.'
Still, while television audiences crept up by around six percent while actual match attendance remained static.
'We probably haven't delivered off the field and given fans all the tools that should go in and around a great product that we have on the field so we're working on that,' Mesley said. 'We took some pretty good steps I think this year.'

LEEDS, England (AP) — Harry Brook held England's reply together as India took two wickets on the third morning Sunday of the test series opener at Headingley. Brook was taking the attack to India with 57 not out, and using up lives, as England reached 327-5 at lunch, 144 runs behind India. England scored 118 runs in the session. India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah finally got support from his fellow bowlers as Prasidh Krishna bagged Ollie Pope on 106 and Mohammed Siraj claimed Ben Stokes on 20. Both were nicked off. Bumrah, who took the three England wickets on Saturday but should have had a five-for, had no luck on Sunday, but Brook also had a say. The batter, playing on his home ground, went after all of India's bowlers successfully for his 20th fifty-plus test score in his 42nd inning. He had seven boundaries and, in the day's first over, slogged Krishna for six over deep midwicket. Then Brook came down the track at Bumrah to bash him through the covers. Brook drove Krishna on the up for another four then charged at Siraj. Siraj adjusted but Brook still lifted the ball over the slips cordon to the deep third boundary. Ravindra Jadeja's spin troubled Brook the most but he pulled him to the square leg boundary with one bounce. Jadeja was getting the ball to fizz so well that Rishabh Pant dropped a tough chance at the stumps when Brook gave an outside edge on 46. That was Brook's second life. Bumrah got him caught in Saturday's last over but overstepped. After Pope was out early, adding only six runs to his overnight 100, Brook's assertiveness allowed Stokes to settle. Stokes lasted nearly an hour until he feathered Siraj behind. Jamie Smith, 29 not out, joined Brooks and their partnership by lunch was an unbeaten 51. David ‘Syd' Lawrence, England's first British-born Black cricketer, has died at 61
GLOUCESTER, England (AP) — David 'Syd' Lawrence, the first British-born Black cricketer to play for England, has died. He was 61. Lawrence's family made the announcement on Sunday with a statement through Gloucestershire, where Lawrence was the club president. He announced a year ago he had motor neurone disease. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease,' the family said. ''Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed. 'A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was.' He played five tests for England from 1988-92, taking 18 wickets. His international career prematurely ended at 28 when he broke his knee cap after falling awkwardly when running in to bowl against New Zealand on the final day of a test in Wellington. A strapping fast bowler who was renowned for being one of the quickest on the English county circuit, Lawrence was beginning to establish himself in tests and a five-for against the West Indies in 1991 helped England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Viv Richards among his haul. Lawrence also played a sole one-day international against the West Indies at Lord's in 1991, taking 4-67. For Gloucestershire, he grabbed 625 wickets in 280 matches. The England and India teams gave Lawrence a moment's silence on Sunday in Leeds before the third day's play in the first test. Lawrence became a competitive bodybuilder following his retirement and he was also a nightclub owner in Bristol. After he detailed his experiences of racism during his playing career, Gloucestershire issued an unreserved apology in September 2021, and six months later he became the county's first Black president. Only last week, Lawrence received an MBE in King Charles III's birthday honors for outstanding services to cricket. At the time, he said, 'As a proud Gloucester man who achieved his dream to play for England on the cricket field, it means a great deal to me and to my family who have supported me with all their love during some difficult times. I have always put my heart and soul into any challenge I have faced and that is how I have approached things since my diagnosis with motor neurone disease.' He was fundraising to fight MND as recently as Friday, when Gloucestershire honored him during a Twenty20 game. Lawrence was also recently named an honorary life vice president of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and chair Richard Thompson paid tribute. 'David 'Syd' Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion,' Thompson said on Sunday. 'His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes. As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport. Adames scores twice in Reign's 4-1 win over struggling Royals
Emeri Adames scored two goals in the second half and the Seattle Reign beat the Utah Royals 4-1 in the National Women's Soccer League on Saturday. It was the first multi-goal game of Adames' career, and at 19 years and 79 days old, she became the second-youngest player to ever score two goals in an NWSL match. Elsewhere in the NWSL on Saturday, Gotham FC beat Bay FC 2-1 at home, the North Carolina Courage won 2-1 at home against the Houston Dash, and the Portland Thorns edged the Chicago Stars 1-0 to stay undefeated at Providence Park. At America First Field in Utah, the Reign (6-4-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Ji So-Yun scored from 14 yards out after a headed pass from Maddie Dahlien in the sixth minute. Ji then returned the favor and played Dahlien through on goal for the Reign's second goal in the 16th. Penelope Hocking put Bay up 1-0 in the 11th minute. Hocking latched onto a looping pass from Hannah Bebar and poked the ball past Ann-Katrin Berger in the Gotham goal. Acting head coach Nathan Thackeray made a triple substitution in the 66th minute, putting Jaedyn Shaw, Ashley Sanchez and Betfort into the game. Dash midfielder Sarah Puntigam was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Shaw in the 70th. Shaw scored the equalizer with a simple finish from the center of the box in the 71st. Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby recorded a team record 27th NWSL clean sheet, making three saves. The Stars (1-7-3) are winless in their last nine games.
