Alleged Hamas supporter Abu Wadee jailed for illegal UK entry

BBC News19-05-2025

An alleged Hamas supporter who reportedly made antisemitic comments has been jailed for nine months for attempting to enter the UK illegally on a small boat.Abu Wadee, 33, also known as Mosab Abdulkarim Al-Gassas, pleaded guilty on Monday at Canterbury Crown Court to trying to enter the country on 6 March without leave or valid entry clearance. He was arrested by immigration enforcement officers after arriving in Kent, having paid smugglers 1,500 euros (£1,300) and was placed in a Manchester hotel.Judge Sarah Counsell said there is "legitimate public concern about breaches of border control", which are of "significant profit to organised criminals".
Wadee had livestreamed his arrival on an "overcrowded and rigid inflatable boat", the court heard and he was told there was a "risk of death or injury to you and others".The court heard he had made asylum claims in Greece, Germany and Belgium, had no familial or financial ties to the UK and had stayed between Calais and Dunkirk in France for about seven days before making the crossing. He livestreamed his dinghy being approached by a Border Force vessel on TikTok, with the court being shown a 20-second clip of the livestream.Wadee's videos attract up to 2.5 million views, The Mail on Sunday has claimed, and he is alleged to have charted his journey from Gaza on the social media channel. His arrival in the UK made national headlines after it was reported that Wadee, from Khan Yunis in Gaza, had allegedly posted on social media in support of Hamas and calling for the death of Jews.He posted a video on his Facebook page last September in which he is filmed calling for Allah to "punish (Jews) completely", it was reported. In another picture posted on Facebook in March 2021, it is claimed he stared into the camera while smoking a cigarette and brandishing an assault rifle with a telescopic sight.

Partner of charity boss found dead after rescuers attended a gas explosion is remanded in custody over 'murder and arson'

A man appeared in court today charged with murdering his partner who was found stabbed following a gas explosion at her home. Annabel Rook, 46, was discovered fatally injured with multiple stab wounds in the living room of a house in Stoke Newington, North East London, on June 17. Clifton George, 44, was arrested for murder at the scene shortly after officers arrived, taken to hospital with slash injuries, then discharged and released into police custody. The Metropolitan Police confirmed this morning that he had been charged yesterday with Ms Rook's murder and arson with intent to endanger life. Today, George spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address when he appeared in the dock at Thames Magistrates' Court in Bow. Ms Rook co-founded the refugee and women's organisation MamaSuze, an arts-based unit which helps victims of forced displacement and gender-based violence. Prosecutor Cathryn Evans repeated the organisation's tribute, telling the court Ms Rook was 'a shining light who dedicated her life to supporting others'. 'She spent the last 20 years of her career bringing joy and creativity to marginalised people and she cared deeply about improving the lives of vulnerable women and children.' George was remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on June 25. Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who is in charge of policing for the Central East Basic Command Unit, said: 'Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss. 'We ask that the public refrain from speculation and respect their privacy at this time, and we thank the Hackney community for their ongoing support.' Police were called at 4.57am on June 17 to reports of a gas explosion with a person trapped inside the property. The front bay window of the property was completely blown out that morning, with debris including plants, wooden shutters and glass scattered across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident but are not thought to have been inside the home when the explosion happened. Six fire engines and 40 firefighters were also called to the scene. In a statement previously issued via the Metropolitan Police, Ms Rook's family said they were 'struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy'. 'We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman,' the tribute read. 'She touched the hearts of so many. 'She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged whether it was in refugee camps in Africa or setting up MamaSuze in London, to enhance the lives of survivors of forced displacement and gender-based violence. 'We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.' MamaSuze is defined as a Community Interest Company (CIC), which is a limited company intended to benefit a community that cannot be registered as a charity. Anyone with information that could assist the investigation into the incident has been urged to contact police on 101 quoting CAD 926/17June. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Israeli troops kill at least 39 people in Gaza Strip

A series of air strikes and shootings took place across Gaza overnight and into Monday, including areas where civilians had gathered to receive aid. Four civilians were killed and others wounded when Israeli forces targeted a house in Jabalia al-Balad in north Gaza, the Middle East Eye reports. Elsewhere, Israeli troops opened fire near an aid distribution centre northwest of Rafah, in the south of Gaza, killing 10 people. READ MORE: John Swinney 'concerned' about UK involvement in Middle East conflict Medical sources said in the past 24 hours, 39 people were confirmed killed – including one body which was recovered from debris – and 317 other people were injured. The death toll in Gaza has now risen to at least 55,998 people since October 7 2023, most of whom were women and children. The number of wounded has risen to 131,559, although medical sources warned that many victims remain trapped under the rubble. Of this, at least 5685 people have been killed since March 18, when Israel broke its ceasefire with Hamas. It comes as the UK Government announced that pro-Palestine group Palestine Action will be proscribed as a terrorist organisation. On Monday, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said "the disgraceful attack" was "the latest in a long history of unacceptable criminal damage committed by Palestine Action". READ MORE: What happens if Palestine Action is banned under terrorism laws? She added that a draft proscription order will be laid in Parliament next week. The move led Palestine Action to organise an emergency protest in London on Monday afternoon. While the protest was originally meant to take place outside Westminster, police imposed an exclusion zone around the area under the Public Order Act and instead moved the demonstration to Trafalgar Square. Police were seen clashing with protesters at the scene, as a number of people were arrested. The demonstration dispersed shortly after 3pm.
