MFs' AUM hits Rs 70-trn mark: ICRA

Kolkata: The Assets Under Management (AUM) of the Indian mutual fund (MF) industry touched Rs 70 trillion as of March 2025, marking a 22.5 per cent year-on-year growth, according to ICRA Analytics. In a statement, ICRA Analytics said AUM of open-ended schemes like index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) witnessed a growth of 23.80 per cent in April 2025, followed by open-ended equity funds. It added that the number of folios grew by 30.21 per cent as of April 2025, while folio count of debt-oriented schemes declined by 1.15 per cent during the period.
The statement said that inflows into equity MFs amounted to Rs 24,269 crore, indicating confidence of investors in the MF industry. The total number of outstanding systematic investment plans (SIP) grew five per cent year-on-year to 914.41 lakh in April 2025.

He was speaking at the first bamboo harvest at the Agroforestry Research Farm of Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). Illorkar, who has been leading the study on bamboo since 2010, said that the university has submitted 15 key research-based recommendations to the state govt over the years, which have been implemented through various policies. Despite being a traditional resource, bamboo cultivation demands specialised skills. The tools used are still traditional, but training is necessary, as general labourers often cannot operate them effectively," he said. Illorkar emphasised the need to match bamboo varieties with available labour capacities, and also stressed the importance of fumigation and post-harvest handling. Additionally, bamboo retains 70–80% moisture in its early stages, requiring proper awareness to avoid premature harvesting. Despite its ecological and economic value, challenges in training labour, high harvesting costs, and misinformation have hindered widespread adoption. "Bamboo, unlike other crops, requires specific knowledge and labour training, which most daily-wage farm workers lack," said Kaswa adding that current harvesting costs of Rs2,000 per tonne need to be brought down to Rs 1,200 to make the venture viable. Historically, bamboo's use in India was curbed by the 1927 Forest Control Act imposed by the British, who restricted its cultivation and trade. "The Britishers labelled it 'poor man's timber' and psychologically distanced even the affluent Indians from its use," said Kaswa, adding that bamboo played a vital role in Indian culture, from surgical procedures to cremation. However, in 2017, bamboo was finally removed from the Forest Act by the Central govt.

Panbazar road overbridge to be ready by July: NFR

Guwahati: Construction of the Panbazar road overbridge (ROB), which began last year, is expected to be completed by July, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said. The bridge is likely to ease traffic congestion in the Paltan Bazar and Panbazar areas, two of the city's oldest cosmopolitan areas. But most of the work has been completed, including laying the foundational structures, significant fabrications, and placing the bow string girders. Advanced sub-soil strengthening through geo-cell technology has also been completed. The project is expected to be complete by July this year," said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, chief public relations officer, NFR. The construction work of the ROB has not been progressing on a smooth note. The CPRO said the presence of the fire brigade station posed a challenge in the stacking of construction materials, limiting workspace efficiency. Approximately Rs 48 crore in cost, the project was undertaken by a Kolkata-based construction company to facilitate the smooth movement of the electric locomotives as part of the NFR's ongoing electrification process, where high-voltage lines have been installed. However, the old ROB, which was built in 1965, had turned into a 'dead wire zone'. The area under the bridge was a neutral point, and since it was not charged, it restricted the speed permanently to 15 km/h. As a result, locomotives approaching Guwahati railway station failed to maintain the required momentum, causing them to halt in that area. He added that the new ROB will aim to address the limitations of its predecessor while introducing significant enhancements. With a span of 60 meters, it will provide improved vertical and horizontal clearance. It will also feature a three-lane wide road replacing its two-lane limitations, which will increase its capacity to handle higher volumes of road traffic as well, thus ensuring a smoother transportation system for commuters.
