Al Shaqab Racing's Hajmah took a major step forward as she claimed Gr1 4YO PA Qatar Derby at Chantilly in France on Sunday.
Khalifa bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, QREC Board Member, awarded trophies to the winners of the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC)-sponsored Gr1 PA Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 Ans, run over 2000m.
Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Mansour, Chief Operating Officer of Al Shaqab Racing, received the trophy on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing after their homebred filly, Hajmah (Al Mourtajez) clinched the prestigious title in a standout performance.
The four-year-old Hajmah, facing a competitive field of 10 runners, delivered a strong performance to claim her first Gr.1 (PA) victory.
She arrived at Chantilly following a fair seasonal return last month in the Gr.2 (PA) Qatar Prix de l'Élevage at Toulouse, a run that served as a solid stepping stone toward this target.
Already a Gr.3 (PA) winner at three, having landed the Prix Nevada II over 1600m, Hajmah had shown clear potential. This time, stepped up in distance and grade, she confirmed that promise.
Not the quickest out of the stalls, Hajmah improved her position to race in midfield, just behind Bianca De Ghazal (Al Mourtajez) while Mureb (Gazwan) set the pace up front. Entering the final straight, Soumillon switched her to the left and she moved up smoothly, keeping Bianca De Ghazal boxed in.
Inside the final 300m, Hajmah was asked to go forward. Though briefly niggled along, she responded well, took the lead and battled gamely to the line. She held off the late challenge of Lippo De Carrere (Al Mourtajez), who finished fast to get within half a length at the post.
Ridden by Mickael Barzalona and trained by Alban de Mieulle for Wathnan Racing, Lippo De Carrere secured second place. The favourite, Moneer (Al Mourtajez), also owned by Wathnan Racing, trained by Damien Watrigant and partnered by James Doyle, came in third a further one and a quarter lengths behind. Notably, the top three placings were all secured by Qatari-owned runners, who are all sired by Al Mourtajez.
Bred by Al Shaqab Racing, Hajmah is out of Easter de Faust (Mahabb), a Gr.1 (PA) winner over 2000m in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches at three, and a Gr.3 (PA) winner over 1600m the same year. Easter de Faust is a half-sister to Battash De Faust (Af Albahar), a multiple winner over 1400m and third in a Gr.1 (PA) over 1600m in Doha.

Wathnan Racing's Crimson Advocate strikes again in Duke of Cambridge
Tribune News Network Ascot (England) Crimson Advocate (Nyquist) delivered a strong and determined performance to land the Gr.2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes over 1600m on day two of Royal Ascot on Wednesday. The four-year-old mare is trained by John and Thady Gosden and races in the colours of Wathnan Racing, who celebrated their third winner of the week. Ali bin Yousef Al Kubaisi, Ali bin Youself Al Romaihi and Oliver Tait received the trophy on behalf of Wathnan Racing. A field of seven fillies and mares lined up for the Gr.2 contest. Crimson Advocate arrived at Ascot in fine form, having won the Listed Conqueror Fillies' Stakes at Goodwood on her seasonal return. Stepping back into Group company, she confirmed her class and consistency to become a dual Group 2 winner, having won the 1000m Queen Mary in the same meeting last year. After a sharp start, she was soon restrained by her jockey James McDonald at the rear of the field, tracking Soprano (Starspangledbanner), who was racing keenly. The race was led by Running Lion (Roaring Lion), setting an even pace. Turning for home, Crimson Advocate was still last and slightly nudged along, but once angled wide into the clear, she delivered a powerful run. Sweeping past the field on the outside, she quickened impressively to take command and put the race to bed in a matter of strides. She crossed the line with one and a quarter lengths in hand over the favourite, Cinderella's Dream (Shamardal), who ran in the colours of Godolphin for trainer Charlie Appleby and under jockey William Buick. The third place went to Wathnan Racing as well with Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot), trained by Karl Burk and ridden by James Doyle, finishing only a further head behind. Bred by Whitehall Lane Farm, Crimson Advocate is out of Citizen Advocate (Proud Citizen), a dirt winner over 1200 and 1400m at two, and runner-up in the Gr.3 Azalea Stakes over 1200m at three.

Qatar Basketball Federation unveils 2025 calendar
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has revealed its event calendar for 2025, which features a range of camps and both official and friendly participations for national teams. The initiative is part of a broader strategy designed to improve the technical preparedness of players and to broaden their international exposure in anticipation of forthcoming continental and global competitions. The Qatar men's national team 'A' will commence its training for the FIBA Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17, 2025. Preparations will include an external training camp in Turkey, set to occur from June 18 to July 3, 2025. This camp will focus on intensive training overseen by the technical staff, along with friendly matches aimed at enhancing both physical and tactical fitness. The tournament draw has placed the Qatari national team in Group A, alongside Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea, a grouping that observers have characterized as formidable. This presents additional challenges for the Qatari team as they strive to advance to the knockout stage. The winners of the group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing in second and third place will compete in playoffs to secure the remaining positions. The team will further its preparations in Doha from July 8 to 14, 2025, during which they will engage in friendly matches against Asian teams, before traveling to South Korea for a training camp from July 16 to 21, 2025. We have developed a comprehensive plan for the national teams of all categories, ensuring the highest levels of readiness through external training camps and participation in specialized tournaments. The men's team's participation in the Asian Cup in Jeddah represents a crucial milestone, and we are confident in our players' abilities to perform to an honorable standard.' Al Kuwari added: 'Our participation in the historic William Jones Tournament and friendly tournaments also confirms our commitment to creating an optimal environment for interaction and development. We also pay special attention to the age groups, and we view the Gulf Junior Championship as an important gateway to emerging on the Asian stage. We are working to create a new generation of players who will represent the future of the game in Qatar.' Al Kuwari concluded his remarks by emphasizing the institutional partnerships that support the success of this plan, praising the cooperation of the Qatar Olympic Committee, the clubs, and all supporters of national basketball.
