Pro-Kannada groups warn theatre owners in Bengaluru against screening Kamal Haasan's ‘Thug Life'
Tensions flared outside Victory Cinema in Bengaluru's Kamakshipalya on Sunday as members of the pro-Kannada outfit Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) gathered to protest the release of Kamal Haasan's upcoming film Thug Life. The organisation is demanding a statewide ban on the film, alleging that the veteran actor insulted the Kannada language.

Led by Praveen Shetty, the protesters warned theatre authorities against screening the film. The flashpoint follows a controversial statement Haasan allegedly made during a promotional event in Chennai, where he reportedly claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil.' The remark triggered a wave of backlash across Karnataka, with activists accusing Haasan of belittling the state's linguistic heritage.
Speaking to ANI, Praveen Shetty said, 'Kamal Haasan has disrespected Kannada. We've informed the management of Victory Cinema that this film cannot be allowed to release here. If Thug Life is screened in Karnataka, the state government must be prepared to take responsibility for any fallout.'
Protests erupted across the state in the days following the actor's remarks, culminating in a formal response from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The chamber has imposed a ban on the film's release within the state, standing in solidarity with Kannada organisations demanding an apology from Haasan.

Despite mounting pressure, Kamal Haasan has stood his ground. Addressing reporters outside the DMK headquarters in Chennai, he refused to issue an apology, asserting his right to free speech. 'This is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My affection for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala is genuine—no one with good intentions would doubt that. If I am wrong, I will apologise. If not, I won't,' Haasan said.
The actor also acknowledged that he had faced similar threats in the past, but maintained that he would not bow to political pressure or emotional coercion.

Kuberaa Box Office Collections: Rings 26cr worldwide on first day, Career best opening for Dhanush
Sekhar Kammula directed Telugu-Tamil bilingual Kuberaa grossed Rs. 17 crore approx at the Indian box office on its first day. The Dhanush starrer delivered his biggest opening to date, surpassing his previous best, Raayan, which opened to Rs. 16.50 crore last year. Additionally, the film grossed another Rs. 9 crore approx overseas, for a worldwide gross of Rs. 26 crore, also his best. The Telugu version led the charge, while the Tamil version was on the lower side. There were also Hindi and Kannada dubbed versions, but they were non-starters, though the film had a pretty good first day in Karnataka state. The film grossed Rs. 10 crore approx in the Telugu states, with a good contribution from both the Andhra and Nizam sides. Tamil Nadu came in at Rs. 4.25 crore approx, which is below par for a Dhanush film, but a couple of days ago, even Rs. 3 crore seemed doubtful. The film did well to end up where it did. It saw a good pick-up in collections as the day progressed, which also bodes well for its overall prospects. Kuberaa has high costs involved, north of Rs. 125 crore. It managed to make good recoveries from the non-theatrical rights, which have eased immediate pressure on its box office run, but it still needs to gross close to Rs. 125 crore to see its investors through. From this start and with seemingly positive reception, the film looks like a potential winner. This has been a terrible year for the Telugu box office, with a drought of releases since the two weeks of the Sankranti period in January. There were a couple of releases that did well at the medium level, but overall, the situation is grim. Kuberaa shall provide some relief, but a lot more is needed. ‘Hari Hara Veera Mallu': Pawan Kalyan's film locks a release date
After multiple delays, Pawan Kalyan's movie Hari Hara Veera Mallu has locked its latest release date. The pan-Indian movie, originally shot in Telugu, is directed by Jyothi Krishna and Krish Jagarlamudi. The makers first aimed to release the movie on March 29, 2025. However, the big-budget movie got pushed to May 09, 2025. Owing to delays in the post-production work, Hari Hara Veera Mallu thengot postponed to June 12, 2025. Reports hinted at further delay of the movie due to complex VFX work. On June 21, 2025 (Saturday), the makers announced a fresh release date. The historical film is now set to hit the screens worldwide on July 24, 2025. 'Witness the Battle for truth, faith and freedom in cinemas worldwide on July 24, 2025,' the makers wrote on social media. The movie is produced by A Dayakar Rao under the banner Mega Surya Productions. Veteran producer AM Rathnam will present the movie, which will be dubbed in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam.
