Woman whose former husband sexually abused their young daughter pleads guilty to child cruelty
A WOMAN WHOSE former husband subjected their young daughter from the age of three onwards to a litany of sexual abuse including rape on an almost daily basis pleaded guilty at a sitting of the Circuit Criminal Court today to cruelty to a child contrary to the Childrens' Act 1908.
The offender, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty on an amended indictment before a jury at Castlebar Courthouse to two sample charges that she exposed her child to assault, ill-treatment and neglect in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to her health.
The mother's ex husband is currently serving an eighteen year prison sentence for the offences. The offences were committed at addresses in the west of Ireland between 3 January 1995 and 31 December 1995, and January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2000.
Garda Inspector Thomasina McHale, responding to prosecuting counsel Patricia McLaughlin S.C., told the court that the investigation into the victim's mother was secondary to an extensive historical sexual abuse allegation involving the victim's father.
Inspector McHale said the abuse against the victim between 1988 and 2001, when she was aged between three and sixteen, included touching her genitals, digital penetration, penetration with objects including vibrators, a candle and the handle of a hairbrush.

'It happened on a daily basis,' the officer stated. 'It happened in multiple rooms in the house, frequently in the bathroom, the sitting room, her parents' bedroom, her bedroom and in the car as well'.
Defence counsel Desmond Dockery S.C. told the court the accused was pleading guilty to two counts on a full facts basis of wilfully exposing a child to ill treatment in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.
She was not pleading to sexual assault or physical ill treatment (of the victim) nor was she accused of that.
Counsel added that she was not pleading to having knowledge of the depth, extent and depravity and nature of the abuse committed although there were signs and reasons for her to suspect that her daughter had been subject to some inappropriate attention.
Ms McLaughlin, prosecuting counsel, said it was not the prosecution case that the accused witnessed all of the actual acts that were happening but it was certainly the prosecution's case that the acts were happening at such a frequency and in multiple rooms in the house on a daily basis that she certainly knew that something was happening to her daughter.
Remanding the accused on continuing bail, Judge Sinead McMullan put back sentencing until October for mention.
The judge acceded to a request from Mr. Dockery for psychological assessment for the accused as well a Probation Report 'given the peculiar nature of the case', in the words of the senior counsel.

Boy in serious condition in hospital after being knocked down
A young boy was left in a serious condition in hospital after he was struck by a car in Co Donegal last night. The child was walking in the village of Ramelton when he was struck by a car on the R245 road to Letterkenny at around 6pm. The emergency services rushed to the scene and the boy was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for immediate treatment. The boy's condition this morning is not yet known. "The collision involved a car and a pedestrian at approximately 6:00pm on the R245 Letterkenny Road. "The pedestrian, a male juvenile child, was taken from the scene to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment."

Dad with 53 convictions jailed for sexually exploiting girl he used to babysit
In her victim impact statement the young woman said her life spiralled after the abuse. A 49-year-old Laois father has been jailed for two years for defilement and sexual exploitation of a child he used to babysit. The man, who is Irish heritage but was born in the UK before moving to Ireland as a child, pleaded guilty to defilement of the 15-year-old girl and obtaining a child for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Co Laois, on dates in 2021. The man, who cannot be identified to protect the anonymity of his victim, was sentenced to two years after appearing in Portlaoise Circuit Court this week. The court heard he had 53 previous convictions for offences including indecency, animal welfare offences, public order offences, indecent communication, breaches of barring orders and road traffic offences. He sat with his head bowed in court as the victim and her family members looked on during his sentencing hearing on Thursday. In her victim impact statement the young woman said her life spiralled after the abuse. 'I was having thoughts that I wanted to take my own life. I couldn't concentrate in school and was thinking about suicide.' She said she started skipping school and running away from home in the aftermath. 'My family did everything they could to get me the help I needed.' She said she got counselling but some days would battle to get to sleep at night. I kept getting nightmares thinking about it. I still think about it. I will never forget what happened.' Detective Garda Ray Dermody told Judge told Judge Keenan Johnson that the girls father reported her missing on November 11 2021 and spoke to gardai again the following day to say he believed she was at the man's house where they later found her. Days later she revealed to gardai that the man had sex with her in the house while she was there and had also digitally penetrated her on another occasion earlier that month. The man was a brother of an ex-girlfriend of the victim's father and the court heard the man previously babysat her and had been chatting to her online and by phone with the conversations turning sexual and very intense. He called her at 6.30am on November 2, 2021 but she missed the call and called him back. The court heard he told her to come out to his house and she initially said she didn't know if she would because she had to go to school. However, he convinced her to ditch school to go to his home. When she arrived he stripped down to his underwear and told her to take her clothes off. He kissed her and took off her underwear before digitally penetrating her. The court heard the girl felt confused after what happened and ended things by saying she needed to go to bathroom. She stayed in his house overnight before going home. On November 11 the man messaged the girl saying he missed her very much and she went over to his home. They went to the bedroom and got undressed before he kissed her and had sex with her. The girl made a complaint to gardai in the days after she was found at the man's home. He initially denied any sexual activity had taken place and said he saw himself as a 'sort of mentor' figure , an 'agony aunt' and a comforting shoulder but 'no more' than that. However, he later came clean and admitted everything. The court heard the man was previously married and had a number of children. He moved to Ireland when he was a child to stay with family here and in his adult life had sporadic work as a painter and gas fitter. In mitigation his defence counsel said the girl wasn't abducted by the man but accepted that society cannot condone his behaviour. Judge Johnson said the man actively initiated sexual contact with a girl who was 'clearly very vulnerable' and described the two offences as 'abhorrent.' He commended the young woman for coming forward and sentenced the man to two years imprisonment.

Man arrested after over €100,000 of cannabis plants seized following Louth raid
One man has been arrested after Gardaí seized over €100,000 of cannabis plants following a Louth raid. Late last night Thursday, 19 June, as part of Operation Tara and ongoing investigations into the sale and supply of drugs and related criminal activity, Gardaí attached to the Dundalk Drugs Unit assisted by Dundalk Detective and Crime Units executed a search under warrant at a residence in Dundalk, Louth. During the course of the search, approximately 126 mature cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of €100,800 was seized (analysis pending), along with cannabis with an estimated value of €34,000 which was packaged and ready for onward sale and supply. A man, aged in his late 20s was arrested at the scene in connection with the investigation and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda station in Co. Louth. He has since been charged and appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court this afternoon at 4pm on June 20. The drugs will be sent for analysis to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI). This seizure forms part of Operation Tara; an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris on July 2, 2021. The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels - international, national, local - involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.
