Author Prafulla Roy passes away at 91
Kolkata: Author Prafulla Roy, aged 91, passed away on Thursday at a south Kolkata nursing home. Roy, who shot to fame with his celebrated novel, 'Purba Parbati', in the 1950s and authored more than 150 books, was a winner of several literary awards, including the Sahitya Akademi for his novel, 'Krantikal', in 2003. He is survived by his two daughters. CM Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to the late author and conveyed her condolences to his family. "Prafulla Roy's books brought alive the pain of refugees. His 'Keyapatar Nouko' is a remarkable story," she wrote on X. He spun his stories around lives of the common man. Roy was born in 1934 in Bikrampur near Dhaka, now in Bangladesh. He migrated to India with his family in 1950. Some of his more successful novels are 'Keya Patar Nouko', 'Shatadharay Boye Jay', and 'Uttal Somoyer Itikatha'. His works 'Ekhane Pinjar', 'Bagh Bandi Khela', 'Charachar', 'Ekanta Apan', 'Bagh Bahadur', 'Mondo Meyer Upakhyan', 'Krantikal', and 'Pitribhumi' were made into films.

Eminent Bengali writer Prafulla Roy dies at 91, Mamata condoles death of Roy
Kolkata, Eminent Bengali writer and Sahitya Akademi award winner Prafulla Roy died here on Thursday following prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 91 years old. A close family member said Roy passed away in a private hospital in the city at around 3 pm. Roy, a widower, is survived by two daughters. Condoling Roy's death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X, "The plight, pain and sufferings of refugees got reflected in several literary works by Prafulla Roy who himself was born on the other side of the border." Describing "Keyapatar Nouko' as one of his timeless fictions, Banerjee recalled the West Bengal government had been privileged to honour Roy at a function in 2012. She pointed out that Roy had enriched the contents of many newspapers/periodicals being associated with leading media groups in his literary capacity - at different points in time. She offered condolences to the bereaved family and countless readers of Roy describing his death as an "irreparable loss". While Roy was suffering from various age-related problems for a long time, he was admitted to a private hospital in the city since March due to breathing issues and his condition turned critical. Born in 1934 in Bikrampur in Bengal presidency now known as Munshiganj, Bangladesh, Roy had shifted to Kolkata in the 1950s. His memorable works include Keya Patar Nouko, Satodharay Boye Jay, Krantikal, etc. Films like Ekhane Pinjar, Baghbondi Khela, Mohanar Dike, Mondo Meyer Upakshan, Bagh Bahadur, Charachar, Aadmi Aur Aurat had been adapted to films from his books and earned critical acclaim fetching awards. Roy's works often depicted the lives of middle-class, lower middle-class Bengalis and the marginalised people of Bihar among whom he had lived for a considerable period of time during his chequered career. He received the Sahitya Akademi award in 2003 for Krantikal, he got Bankim Purashkar for his work Akasher Niche Manush in 1985. Roy's young publisher friend Apu Dey of Dey's Publishing told PTI, "It is a great loss for the literary world of Bengal and the country." "He was associated with us for over five decades when my father was young. We had the honour to publish his novel Aloy Phera in the early 70s which was our first tryst with Prafulla jethu . We had published many of his award-winning and popular novels later on," the young publisher added.

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 18 (ANI): Actor Chandan Roy, who ruled the hearts of the Indian audience with his debut performance in the widely acclaimed web series 'Panchayat', opened up on the factors that contributed to the show's success and massive popularity among audiences. Panchayat is a comedy-drama series starring Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, and Neena Gupta in the lead roles. Chandan Roy portrays the character of Vikas Shukla, a quirky office assistant at the Gram Panchayat in the fictional village of Phulera, in the series. In an interview with ANI, the actor highlighted the factors responsible for the success of 'Panchayat'. In an era dominated by Bollywood masala and mainstream commercial movies, Roy believes that it was 'Panchayat's simplicity that won the hearts of the viewers. "That is its simplicity. Right? You can't eat masala and all these things every day. You will have to come back to rice, lentils and khichdi," Roy said, using a food analogy. "And I have given such an example, don't think of me as a chef," he joked. "So, I feel that the more you are filled with simplicity, the more you will be natural, the more people will like you." He further stated that the second factor contributing to the show's success was the character's relatability to the Indian audience. "And in Panchayat, what I feel is that all its characters, you feel that these are from around my house, or you start seeing yourself in it. I think this is the best and most beautiful thing about Panchayat. You never feel that its hero is going to Switzerland and dancing with a beautiful heroine. It doesn't feel like that. His heroine goes and meets him at a photo estate or at a samosa shop. Just like we all have met or will meet. So, this story feels very personal. I think this can be the reason behind the love that Panchayat received," said Chandan Roy. The actor noted that this sense of familiarity makes the show feel deeply personal and may be the reason behind its emotional resonance with the audience. The upcoming fourth season of 'Panchayat' is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 24. Chandan Roy said the upcoming season is his personal favourite and offered a glimpse into the elements that will define the new storyline. "So, it's coming on the 24th. I think it will come till the night of the 23rd. So, just watch, and you'll know what's going to happen and what's not. But yes, I want to share one thing with all of you. Season 4... Personally, it's my favourite. More than Season 1, 2, and 3. I'm not saying this just because I want you to watch it. I'm genuinely saying it," he said. The actor didn't hesitate to drop hints about what sets the upcoming season apart. "There's a twist. I mean, the nature of Panchayat, its essence, is that this time we're playing around a lot more. We're blowing small things out of proportion, and this is something that happens a lot, especially in North India. Under the peepal tree, near the betel leaf shop, by the tea stall. We're bringing all these elements much more into season 4. So, I hope you will really enjoy it." 'Panchayat' series is directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra. (ANI)
