From politics to concerts to whiskey: Inside Lord Henry Mount Charles' life
Slane Castle owner Lord Henry Mount Charles has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.
News of Lord Henry's death broke on Thursday with his family confirming he had passed peacefully in the late hours of Wednesday, June 18 'following a long and valiant battle with cancer.'
They added that the beloved husband, father, grandfather and custodian of Slane Castle inspired 'all who knew him' with his courage and unwavering spirit. Slane Castle owner Lord Henry Mount Charles has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer. Pic: Courtesy of Slane Castle
But who exactly was the late Lord Henry?
Henry Conyngham was the eldest son of the 7th Marquess Conyngham and his first wife, Eileen Wren Newsom, obtaining the courtesy title of the Earl of Mount Charles in 1974.
As a youngster, Henry attended Harrow School in London before studying at Harvard University.
Following the death of his father in 2009, Henry succeeded him as the 8th Marquess Conyngham, but was still more often than not referred to by his former title. Lord Henry Mount Charles. Pic: RTÉ
Lord Henry married twice — he married Juliet Kitson in 1971, and the pair went on to have three children together before their divorce in 1985.
Lord Henry and Juliet's children are Alexander, Henrietta and Lord Gerald.
The same year he divorced Juliet, he went on to marry Lady Iona Charlotte Grimston. The pair welcomed the arrival of their only daughter Tamara in 1991. Alex Mount Charles at Slane Castle. Pic: Sean Dwyer
The late Lord Henry also has three doting grandchildren through his son Alexander and his wife Carina Bolton. The pair are parents to Lady Laragh, Rory Nicholas and The Honourable Caspar.
In 2023, Lord Henry defied ongoing health issues as he walked his youngest daughter, Lady Tamara Conynham, down the aisle as she wed her long-term partner, Cian Speers.

Slane Castle was built in the late 18th century, with the Conyngham family living on the grounds since, with Alex and his family now residing in the castle with his wife (Countess) Carina.
In 1981, Lord Henry began bringing rock concerts to the sleepy village of Slane, Co Meath, with Thin Lizzy headlining the first event alongside a then 'up and coming' Irish band called U2.
Since then the castle grounds, which features views across the River Boyne, have hosted the biggest names in the world including Bruce Springsteen in 1985; Robbie Williams; Metallica and most recently Harry Styles.
In 2015, the family ventured into the alcohol business and opened their own whiskey distillery on the grounds of Slane Castle.
As well as being a businessman, Lord Mount Charles tried his hand at politics as well, entering the 1992 general election in the Louth constituency as one of the Fine Gael tickets. Unfortunately his bid was unsuccessful, but he didn't allow it to deter him.
In 1997, Lord Henry ran as an Independent as he contested the elections to Seanad Éireann as part of the Dublin University constituency.
Lord Henry withdrew his name from the contest for a nomination to run in the 2004 European elections. He was set to run for the East constituency and would have run for Fine Gael.

Love Island fans brand star ‘the real victim' saying villa is ‘making him look like a complete mug'
LOVE Island fans have branded Shea Mannings the "real victim" after spotting a series of moments where they have "mugged him off". The scaffolder, 25, is currently coupled up with Yasmin Pettet, 24, but she's had her head turned by the other lads in the villa. Yesterday, Shea hit out at the lads for "sniggering" as he took Yasmin to the fire pit for a chat. After chatting to her about her snog with Harry and Dejon in the game, Shea then headed over to the boys to confront them. Shea told Dejon, Harry, Conor and Tommy: "I've been made to look like a bit of a mug there and as I'm walking over I can hear laughing and stuff." Advertisement READ MORE ON LOVE ISLAND Dejon admitted he was the one who laughed. Harry admitted: "It wasn't at you, it wasn't that we were laughing at your chat." But Shea fired back: "But you've got to see it from my point of view. I'm walking over and I can hear that." Now fans are saying that Shea is being unfairly alienated from the other boys in the group. Advertisement Most read in Showbiz Exclusive This eagle-eyed viewer took to reddit with their theory, saying: "I've been picking up on a pattern with Shea and noticing it more but today's episode really solidified it for me some of the Islanders behaviour towards him has just been off. "In yesterday's episode, Meg tried to embarrass Yas by bringing up how she kissed other guys besides her couple (Shea), but it backfired. Love Island fans convinced star is AI bot in bizarre conspiracy theory "It ended up embarrassing Shea way more and just made him look like a complete mug in front of everyone. Yas clearly didn't care, but you could tell Shea felt uncomfortable and humiliated which I felt bad for him. "Then in the episode before that, Tommy was all giddy about Harry and Dejon sneaking around kissing who they wanted, and he didn't call them out at all. Advertisement "But somehow Shea gets singled out even though he apologised. "Ever since Shea came into the villa, it felt like Tommy was threatened by him. Like when he was on the terrace saying he's more attractive than the bombshells and pointing out how tall he is. Then later goes and calls him a 'lanky lamppost' when confronting him? "Today's episode was another one. Meg once again taking the spokesperson role, stirring the pot by asking Shea what he thinks of Yas's comment like he's her guardian or something? "And in the background, Megan (Irish) and Helena making snarky comments. Megan said, 'but she's happy in her couple', and I get that those three don't like Yas (they're giving bully and insecure vibes) but constantly dragging Shea into it like he's responsible for her actions is just so unnecessary and actually really embarrassing." Advertisement They added: "And also… the whole Dejon sniggering thing. I get why Shea was annoyed he was already clearly embarrassed and annoyed, and that laugh just added to it. Even though Dejon said it wasn't about that, the timing felt a bit snarky." Another fan agreed and said: "Felt bad for him last night. Clearly not the right type of person for this show and does come across that everyone in the villa sort of bullies him or doesn't take him serious. "Was glad to see him call out Dejon last night for his immature/disrespectful little noise or whatever it was." While this viewer echoed: "100 per cent I've been noticing that and feeling sad on his behalf that he's being picked on." Advertisement HIDEAWAY ANTICS The next day, Harry and Yasmin enjoyed a cosy chat in the private area and kissed THREE times. But despite their snog, neither Harry nor Yasmin admitted to it when they returned from the Hideaway. That was until their actions were exposed in a brutal firepit game on Thursday night. Helena was left in shock as Yasmin revealed they'd kissed not once, but three times. Advertisement And while Harry smirked, the stunning air hostess was backed by co-star Megan. 'You're a liar,' Megan shouted across the firepit to Harry, adding: 'You owe it to Helena to be f****** honest, you p****. 'She's sat there watching you go into the Hideaway, you kissed her three times and then come out and go 'Oh no, I didn't do anything.'' Meg finished by telling Harry: 'Grow a pair of b******* mate, honestly, grow the f*** up.' The National Lottery also confirmed that the winner made contact with National Lottery HQ, and will be arranging to collect their incredible prize. 'We are absolutely thrilled to have heard from our EuroMillions winner,' National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan said on Thursday. The EuroMillions jackpot was capped at the quarter of a billion euro earlier this month, and after a number of draws where no one won, white smoke finally rose with the latest millionaire being announced; with few predicting that the continental competition's winner would come from Ireland. Of course, this isn't the first time that Ireland have had a massive winner of the competition, nor is it the first time a winner came from Munster — as Dolores McNamara, from Co Limerick, won a life changing €115million on August 4, 2005. As well as this, a family syndicate from Naul in Co Dublin won an even bigger €175.4million in the then-biggest jackpot in the competition's history.

LISTEN: Christy Moore releases new track for Michael D. Higgins
Christy Moore has released 'Music to Our Ears', a spoken word tribute to President Michael D. Higgins. The track, written by poet Johnny Broderick and produced by Gavin Murphy, celebrates President Higgins' life and legacy as he enters the last months of his second and final term in office. The tribute will also feature on the extended edition of Moore's No.1 album A Terrible Beauty , set for release later this year. Speaking on the project, Christy said: 'I think it is a beautiful tribute to our esteemed President and His Family. I think Johnny B's words express what many of us feel about Michael D. and, Our First Lady, Sabina.' The tribute is the latest show of respect and admiration between Christy Moore and President Higgins. In a heartfelt message celebrating Moore's 80th birthday earlier this year, President Higgins praised the singer's decades of service to music and culture. 'Through your music, you have lent voice to those often unheard, bringing to the public discourse the concerns, hopes, and struggles of ordinary people with extraordinary empathy and dignity,' he said. He also described Moore's voice as 'one of the most distinctive and enduring in Irish life,' commending his 'profound sense of justice' and his grounding in 'the values of community, equality and solidarity.' Reflecting on a visit to Aras an Uachtarain, Moore once wrote: 'Encounters with Michael D. over many decades have always been memorable. Meeting him again as the elected President of Ireland was a particular pleasure. There was a feeling of having a true 'man of the people' in Aras an Uachtarain.' President Michael D. Higgins, a former Hot Press columnist from 1983 to 1993, will step down from his role later this year after serving the maximum of 14 years in office.
