2017 Gurugram murder case: CBI seeks time to file status report on prosecution of Haryana cops
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday sought an adjournment in a case against four Haryana police officials accused of falsely framing a school bus conductor in the 2017 murder of a Class 2 student at a Gurugram school.
The request was made before a special CBI court in Panchkula, where the agency had earlier filed a separate charge sheet against the officers under various IPC sections.
The matter was listed for submission of a status report regarding the grant of prosecution sanction by the competent authority, as directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a 2022 case. However, CBI's public prosecutor told special judicial magistrate Anil Kumar Yadav that the sanction was still awaited, despite repeated reminders following the high court's January 24, 2025, order.
The agency requested a final extension to comply with the directive.
The complainant's counsel also asked for an adjournment to present arguments on whether such a sanction was necessary. The court granted both requests and adjourned the matter to May 28.
In January, the high court overturned the Haryana government's earlier decision to deny sanction for prosecuting the officers and directed the sanctioning authority to reconsider the matter, citing CBI's evidence. The Haryana government had originally refused the sanction on February 19, 2021—a decision contested by both the CBI and the victim's father.
The sensational case centres on the murder of a seven-year-old student on September 8, 2017. The Haryana police initially arrested bus conductor Ashok Kumar, but the CBI later arrested a Class 11 student as the real suspect.
On January 6, 2021, the agency filed a supplementary charge sheet accusing police officers Narinder Singh Khatana, Birem Singh, Shamsher Singh, and Subhash Chand of falsely implicating Kumar.

Additional district govt counsel Manoj Gupta said, "The incident occurred on Sept 9, 2017, when the boy was in his school where the convict was appointed as judo coach. Mohd Qasim took the boy to the forest on the pretext of judo training, where he forcefully sodomised him. The boy narrated his ordeal to his family about the incident upon returning home. Subsequently, an FIR against the convict was registered at Katghar police station under the sections of sodomy and the Pocso Act. " He added, "The submitted medical examination report to the court confirmed the assault. Additionally, the statement of the survivor and the circumstantial evidence helped in nailing the accused." The chargesheet was submitted in court, and the judge expedited the trial. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court found Ali guilty and ordered his immediate custody.

One death penalty, five life imprisonments awarded in Palnadu district in May: SP
Courts in Palnadu district pronounced one death penalty and five life imprisonments within a couple of weeks in May. Narasaraopet XIII Additional District and Sessions Judge N. Satya Sri awarded capital punishment to Thanneru Ankamma Rao, a serial killer who committed three murders within three days in 2023. Convicted in all three murders, Ankamma Rao was also sentenced of life imprisonment and a sentence of ten years in jail, apart from imposing a total fine of ₹15,000. The sentences were also pronounced within a week of the trial. Ankamma Rao had targeted three homeless women on three consecutive nights. Palnadu District Superintendent of Police Kanchi Srinivasa Rao, in an interview with The Hindu on Tuesday, said: 'Ankamma Rao's case stands out as a precedent on how digital forensics can fast-track convictions.' About the victims the SP said: 'The victims in this case were mentally unstable homeless women, and he killed them by smashing their heads with cement bricks, when they were sleeping on the roadside.' The police established the identity of one victim, by matching her DNA with her relatives. The department also produced CCTV footage as evidence, which played a crucial role in the investigation and in the trial. Ankamma Rao was given capital punishment for this murder. He also said the judgement should send a strong message to the criminals. 'The Court highlighted the heightened criminality of preying on the vulnerable'. The SP said that Ankamma Rao was found guilty under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 394 (robbery) in this case. Further, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the effective court monitoring system adopted by the district police ensured a total of five life imprisonments and one death sentence in difference cases within a couple of weeks in May. The other persons punished with life imprisonment include Vadithye Nageswara Rao Naik of Vemavaram village, Ballikurava mandal in Bapatla district in a case from 2019; Sk. Peda Baji and Sk. Beebi Fathima of Muppalla mandal in Palandu district in a case from 2021; Boggavarapu Nagaraju of Piduguralla town in a 2023 case; and Nasana Peda Kondaiah of Kunchainapalli village in Ipuru Mandal in a case from 2019.

Former bank managers among three sentenced in fraud case
Patna: A special CBI court at Patna sentenced three people, including two then branch managers of Mithila Kshetriya Gramin Bank (MKGB), Darbhanga, to three years' rigorous imprisonment with a total fine of Rs 4 lakh in a bank fraud case that took place in 1989-90, the central investigating agency said here on Sunday. The special CBI court pronouncing its judgment against the three accused — Barun Kumar Mishra, the then manager of Kahua branch, Darbhanga; Mohan Jee Mishra, the then manager of Bahera branch; and Dayanand Jha — on Saturday. "The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an instant case on Aug 14,1991 against Barun Kumar, the then in charge of Kohua branch, and a field officer of the same branch. It was alleged that the accused, while functioning as branch and field officers of the MKGB during 1989-90, entered into criminal conspiracy and misappropriated a sum of Rs 2.48 lakh by manipulating debit and credit entries in a home savings safe account, shown maintained in the name of one Dayanand Jha of Darbhanga," a CBI spokesperson told TOI on Sunday. After investigation, two separate charge sheets were filed by the CBI on Nov 30, 1994, for different instances of misappropriation. The first charge sheet was filed in the court of special judge (CBI cases), Patna, against Barun Kumar, Mohan Jee and Dayanand. The court, after trial, found all three accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly. The second charge sheet was filed in the court of special judicial magistrate (CBI cases) against Barun Kumar, which is sub-judice in a Muzaffarpur court, the CBI spokesperson said.
