Court compounds defamation case against wrestler Bajrang Punia after his apology
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): Delhi's Patiala House Court on Thursday compounded a defamation case against Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia after his apology. Coach Naresh Dahiya filed the case against Punia. Metropolitan Magistrate Yashdeep Chahal compounded the matter on Thursday.
A detailed court order has yet to be uploaded. ' I tender my unconditional apology to Mr. Naresh Dahiya for the wrong and insensitive statement made by me against him during the press conference held at Jantar Mantar during the agitation, in public view,' the apology reads.
Advocate Rajesh Kumar Rexwal, along with advocates Ravinder Singh and Lovinder Chaudhary, is counsel for the complainant. Advocate Rexwal said that the matter has been compounded after Bajrang Punia gave his written apology.
Advocate Tushar Giri, counsel for Punia said that after tendering of apology, matter was settled between the parties and complaint was compounded.
Earlier, Punia was granted bail by the court after his physical appearance.
The Court on August 3, 2023, issued a summons to Olympic medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia.
Through a criminal defamation complaint, the complainant or Coach Naresh Dahiya, stated that during the protest at Jantar Mantar on May 10, 2023, Bajrang Punia made defamatory remarks against him in a press conference.
The Court had noted that, the relevant extracts reveal that the accused Bajrang Punia had referred a rape case ongoing against the complainant (Naresh Dahiya) in Tis Hazari Court.
The accused allegedly referred to the complainant by name and stated that the complainant has no credibility to oppose the protest as he was himself facing a rape case.
But during recording of statement complainant categorically deposed that he was acquitted in the said rape case in 2019 itself and the said fact was well known to the accused as well, who is a part of the same fraternity.
Metropolitan Magistrate Yashdeep Chahal, while issuing summons to Bajrang Punia, had said that on a consideration of the complaint, supporting documents and presummoning evidence, I am of the prima facie view that all the ingredients of defamation are made out.
He further said that the statement made in the press conference appeared to be malicious and not made in good faith. In view of the same, let the accused, Bajrang Punia, be summoned to commission an offence punishable under Section 499 read with Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code. However, the Court clarified that at the stage of summoning, it is fairly settled that the Court is not required to conduct a comparative analysis of the possible defences that the accused may take.
It was submitted that the fact of acquittal was well known, and a malicious attack was made by the accused to tarnish the reputation and credibility of the complainant to dissuade him from supporting the WFI President in the protest. (ANI)

The Bengaluru City Police carried out raids in several bars and restaurants in the West Zone of the city and discovered numerous violations, including the 'provocative' attire of female staff and breaches of health, excise, and other regulations, ANI reported citing officials. The raids were conducted after the Bengaluru Police Commissioner received details on illegal activities at certain establishments, the report said, citing a statement. The bars and restaurants are located under the jurisdiction of Upparpet, Cottonpet, Kalasipalya, Cubbon Park, and Ashoknagar Police Stations, where 11 special police teams were formed to conduct the probe. The police found that 19 bars and restaurants had violated the regulations by hiring female workers dressed in 'provocative' attire who stood too close to the tables of the customer in an 'indecent' manner. Other violations included the absence of designated female security personnel, poor cleanliness in the kitchen, a lack of a proper smoking area and these places operating beyond allowed hours. Meanwhile, customers found violating COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) regulations were fined immediately. Reports have been sent to the respective police stations for additional legal measures against the owners of the bars and restaurants. Further, the police also found violations related to the health and excise departments. The relevant departments have been informed about the violations and have been asked to take action. Close monitoring of these commercial entities will persist in the coming days. If they violate regulations again, their licenses will be revoked, the report said. If the public experiences any inconvenience or observes any such violations, they can call the helpline number/Namma 112. The identity of informants will remain confidential, the report quoted the release. The raids were headed by C Vamsi Krishna, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, West Zone and S Girish, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Division, including officers and staff from the Central and West Divisions as part of the 11 special police teams.

IOC appoints Camille Cheng as mental health ambassador for Asia Olympic swimmer Camille Cheng Lily-mei has been named one of the first mental health ambassadors by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), recognizing her commitment to athlete wellness beyond her accomplishments in the pool. Cheng, who has represented Hong Kong in three Olympic Games, was invited to attend the IOC Consensus Meeting on Mental Health for Elite Athletes earlier this month in Lausanne, Switzerland. She will serve as the female ambassador representing Asia. Chennaiyin FC bid farewell to Connor Shields

Shields joined the Marina Machans in 2023. In 21 appearances, he recorded five goal contributions in his debut season, as per the ISL press release. Shields' versatility brought in a significant dimension to the CFC's playing style, as he was deployed in various roles across midfield and attack. He excelled in almost every position, showcasing his adaptability and understanding of the game. Shields' ability to create chances and contribute goals made Chennaiyin FC a more dangerous attacking side. Coyle's side reached the playoffs in the 2023-24 season and bettered their goal tally the following season despite finishing 11th. The Scottish playmaker featured in 21 games and was the driving force for the Marina Machans all throughout the 2024-25 season.
