I tried Glasgow's newest food and drink tour

Gillian says she was inspired to start the business as the loves 'doing food tours everywhere I go' and wanted to combine the city's food scene with its history.
She told the Glasgow Times: 'I did my first ever food tour in New York in 2008 and I just got hooked and thought this would be a great idea to set up in Glasgow.'
She continued: 'I thought it would be great to combine the two [food and history] because Scotland's produce is amazing, and it's not always recognised, and Glasgow's history is really interesting. We love sharing stories of Glasgow's past.
'I also wanted to support local and independent businesses. You don't get many about these days so it's great to support them as well as the local community and economy.'

Mercat Cross (Image: David Dixon via geograph.org.uk) The Merchant City Stroll, which launched in April, was developed alongside Visit Glasgow with Gillian using sources such as Slow Food Glasgow's Sustainable Food Directory to develop a route around the oldest part of the city.
She explained: 'I looked at the route and how it would not only cover local and sustainable produce but also logistics, looking at how I would incorporate the city's history into the tour.
'This tour is all about great food and drink, trying traditional and multicultural tastings - it's a city of many cultures. The businesses I work with focus on sustainable produce.'
She added: 'We not only want locals to come and enjoy their city, but also want visitors to come and explore the city the way I see it. Glasgow's got so much to offer.'
Saint Mungo mural (Image: Newsquest) The Merchant City Stroll starts at the Mercat Cross where I met our tour guide Rae, who was a fountain of knowledge on Glasgow's history. I was on the tour alongside a family of four visiting from the USA.
Our first stop was a short walk around the corner to coffee shop and bakery Outlier on London Road.
Outlier, which opened in 2022, makes all of their baked goods on site. Here we were each given a coconut macaroon which gives a nod to multicultural influences in Scottish cuisine.

Macaroons at Outlier (Image: Newsquest) This is not my favourite sweet treat but on taking a bit I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one.
It was nice and moist with the perfect amount of coconut flavour for me.
On leaving Outlier, we headed into the historic Barras and to Crossbill Distilling, who have been producing their range of award-winning Scottish gins in the city since 2017and are the only distillery in the country to source their own juniper berries in Scotland.
A sample of Crossbill Green Dry Gin at Crossbill Distilling (Image: Newsquest) I didn't plan on sipping on straight gin before 12pm - specifically their Green Dry which takes on the flavours of blue and red juniper berries and juniper needles - but it was surprisingly smooth, and you could pick up the fresh flavour from the needles.
Our next stop was at the award-winning Bare Bones chocolate which came at the perfect time as it gave us an escape from a heavy dump of rain which started suddenly (but thankfully stopped just as quickly).
At this stop, we were able to sample their chocolate and we each got a hot chocolate with a homemade marshmallow and were told a little about the process.
Hot chocolate at Bare Bones Chocolate (Image: Newsquest) The hot chocolate was really rich and was a nice size, and I liked having the freedom to choose what chocolate we sampled.
The second half of the tour was a much more food heavy as we made our way to Merchant Square for stop number three Table Twenty Eight.
We were served a small portion of Barra scallops with asparagus and squid ink risotto, which gives a nod to the city's Italian population and influence. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and the risotto and asparagus were delicious.
Scallops, asparagus at risotto at Table Twenty Eight (Image: Newsquest) We then made a quick dash across the road to Mharsanta where we each got a taste of Stobcross Lowland Single malt whiskey, a small bowl of Cullen skink and shared some plates of haggis, neeps and tatties with a whisky cream sauce.
The Cullen skink in particular stood out to me here, it was creamy and full of flavour with a lot of smoked haddock flakes in the portion.
Haggis, neeps & tatties and Cullen skink (Image: Newsquest) For our final food stop, we headed out east again to Drygate brewery where we had a small portion of fish and chips (well, skinny fries) with a glass of their Seven Peaks IPA which is also in the batter.
The batter was nice and crisp with delicious flaky fish, and by the end of this last stop I was officially stuffed.
Fish and chips at Drygate (Image: Newsquest) Throughout the tour we also stopped at sites such as The Barras, Glasgow Cathedral, the Necropolis, and St Andrews in the Square, as well as seeing several of the city's murals including the Big Yin, Saint Mungo and Fellow Glasgow Residents.
I really enjoyed the balance of history and food and learnt a lot of interesting facts about Glasgow I didn't know thanks to Rae and I found there to be a good mix of dishes on the tour.
Although the tour was four hours, with the stops spaced out how they were it was about 5000 steps in total so it wasn't a tiring walk.
Both the Merchant City and West End tours are limited to a maximum of 10 people on each tour, and think being on a small tour better for being able to hear Rae, as well as for being able to chat with other guests.

So, what did they think of the Merchant City Stroll?
'This is our favourite one we've ever done,' they said, also praising the mix of food and history.
Next time I have friends visiting from outside Glasgow and I'm not sure where to take them, I think this would be the perfect option.
The Merchant City Stroll takes place Monday to Thursday and Saturday and costs £95 per person.

Despite persistent global headwinds, recent data from EY highlighted Scotland's attractiveness to global investment, and comparatively greater resilience in the face of general economic turbulence. EY's data places Scotland firmly as the UK's top destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) outside of London – for the tenth year in a row – while Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow remain among the top six UK cities for FDI projects. Although the total number of new projects in Scotland fell 4.9% from record figures in 2023, that number is marginal compared to a drop of 13% in the rest of the UK, 14% in France and 17% in Germany. READ MORE: Scottish Government announces £23.5 million for active travel programmes Despite a slight dip in the total number of projects in 2024 (135 projects, down from a record 142 in 2023), Scotland's share of overall UK projects actually increased to 15.8% (from 14.4% in 2023). This shows Scotland's relative strength compared to broader declines in FDI across the UK and Europe. EY's survey of global investors found that a quarter of those planning to invest in the UK are targeting Scotland, maintaining the country's long-standing position in investors' eyes as the UK's preferred FDI destination outside of London. I recently visited the Glasgow offices of Canadian IT and business consulting services firm CGI Inc, which employs around 750 people across its Glasgow, Edinburgh, Borders and Aberdeen offices, and has nearly 100,000 employees globally. CGI Inc is one of the many thriving international businesses choosing to call Scotland home. The fascinating ZeroAvia, hailing from the US (and developing full hydrogen-electric aircraft engines), is another new resident, along with the Australian not-for-profit ticketing hub Humanitix, who recently opened an office in Edinburgh. 2025 is bringing further significant investment and exciting projects to Scotland. I realise some may be wondering why this is important, or what Scotland's leading place in FDI means. How does FDI benefit the people of Scotland? FDI plays a crucial role in Scotland's economy, contributing significantly to job creation, economic growth, innovation and exports. Quite simply, foreign-owned companies in Scotland, although representing a smaller percentage of all businesses, have a disproportionately large impact on the economy. READ MORE: Scottish Government launches new 'milestone' plan for disability equality These companies account for a substantial share of employment in Scotland, contributing significantly to job creation. These jobs often offer higher average wages than those in domestically owned businesses. Foreign-owned businesses contribute a disproportionately high percentage to Scotland's Gross Value Added (GVA), indicating that these companies possess high productivity and make an outsized economic impact. Inward investors have outstripped domestic businesses in investing in business research and development spending, which fosters innovation and technological advancement within the nation. These innovators also generate a large portion of the total business turnover in Scotland and become major drivers behind Scottish exports. FDI can bring new skills and management practices, which can 'spill over' and benefit domestic Scottish businesses through supply-chain opportunities, hiring and knowledge sharing. Geopolitical headwinds are clearly affecting investor confidence globally. Scotland's FDI resilience in the face of this crisis of confidence is an incredible endorsement of Scotland as a destination for global investment. Scotland's ability to maintain high project numbers and even increase its share of UK projects comes against a backdrop of a marked decline in FDI across Europe and the UK overall. It's a privilege to work with Team Scotland to secure these global opportunities, and the Scottish Government will continue to work with business partners to build our country's reputation as a world-class location for investment. In this digital and hyper-connected world, the continued pursuit of strategic inward investment will propel Scotland towards being a fairer and more prosperous nation. It's also a sign that investors from abroad don't listen to the relentless whingeing of the opposition in the Scottish Parliament about Scotland. Where the opposition see weakness, international allies see strengths.

Festivals given £3m in Government funding

The events will receive a share of the £2.8 million Festivals Expo Fund, and Festivals Edinburgh will get £200,000 from Creative Scotland for branding and marketing support for the events in the capital. The Expo Fund spending has increased from £1.7 million last year. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe will receive £670,000, while the Edinburgh International Book Festival will be given £200,000, the same amount as for the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. Culture Secretary Angus Robertson said: 'Scotland's festivals are our cultural shopfront to the rest of the world. 'As well as offering performers and creatives an unrivalled international platform, they also deliver an annual economic uplift to businesses, jobs and livelihoods right across the country. 'This year's funding increase for the existing Expo festivals cohort represents an increase of £1 million across the 14 festivals in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the first in 10 years. 'It recognises the success of festivals in shaping and supporting hundreds of commissions, enhancing the ambitions of thousands of Scottish artists and attracting audiences in the millions for Expo-supported work since the fund's creation in 2007. 'From this foundation we will expand the reach of the Expo fund across the whole of Scotland, and I am working with festivals across the country through the strategic festivals partnership to realise this commitment.' Dana MacLeod, executive director of arts, communities and inclusion at Creative Scotland, welcomed the funding, saying it will enable festivals to 'commission bold ideas, develop creative collaborations and present high-quality programmes for audiences in Scotland and internationally'. Cairnpapple Hill, near Torphichen, West Lothian Many of Scotland's fascinating Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, stone circles and cairns appear to have been built around the position of the sun at the summer and winter solstices. Among those thought to have been used in this vein is Cairnpapple Hill. An important site for ceremonies and burials for at least 4,000 years – its Neolithic henge dates from about 3,800 BCE, later used for Bronze Age rituals. Not only does it provide a powerful connection to the past, but it occupies a lofty perch proffering incredible views across Central Scotland to the Bass Rock and Berwick Law in the east and the distant mountains of Arran to the west. Afterwards head to the Hideaway Cafe at Beecraigs Country Park where the menu includes soups, sandwiches, pasta dishes, slushies, ice cream and homemade cakes. Read more of Susan's Scottish picks Montrose Basin, Angus A while back I saw a breathtaking sunset picture that, at first glance, I mistook for an oil painting rather than a photograph. It showed Montrose Basin in late June and the vivid colours of the sky – every shade of pink, orange and red – reflecting off the water were spellbinding. Here's hoping for more of the same in the days to come. The Scottish Wildlife Trust is hosting a guided summer solstice walk from 7pm-9pm on Saturday, June 21, 2025, with the chance to see brown hare and roe deer, as well as mute swans, skylarks, yellowhammers and shelducks. There's a small coffee shop at the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre. This closes at 5pm, so, if you're heading along a bit later, aim to grab a bite to eat in nearby Montrose. The Roo's Leap restaurant, despite the distinctly Aussie-sounding moniker, offers a globe-trotting odyssey of international cuisine, from quesadillas and katsu curry to bitterballen and Cajun king prawns. Bird watching at Montrose Basin (Image: J Brogan) Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh With its wow-inducing, 360-degree panoramas across the Edinburgh skyline, Firth of Forth, Fife and the Lothians, Arthur's Seat is a magnificent vantage point – haar permitting – for a life-affirming daunder. Seen from afar this extinct volcano in Holyrood Park – which rises to 823ft (251m) – variously resembles a recumbent lion, or the rounded backside of an elephant with its trunk stretching out in front, depending on your perspective. The Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston is a perfect post-walk pit stop, serving steaks, pasta, burgers and stone-baked pizzas. The shared plates are top-tier, with a selection that includes padron peppers, slow-cooked beef croquettes and halloumi fries. Kinnoull Hill, Perthshire With its bird's eye view of the winding, silvery waters of the River Tay and the photogenic folly of Kinnoull Tower, this is always a joyous spot for a sunrise hike. In fact, Kinnoull Hill is gorgeous at any time of the day, home to mature woodland with beech and pine trees. Afterwards head to Perth's cafe quarter for a yummy brunch – or to grab coffee and a sweet treat. The French brasserie Cafe Tabou is the place to go for delectable eggs (benedict, royale, scrambled, omelettes) and freshly baked pastries. Hinterland is another delightful option, with tasty bagels, topped toasts and filled rolls – the menu even has a 'cake for breakfast' section. Ayrshire Coastal Path If you're more of a sunset person, than an early bird who loves catching a sunrise, then you probably need a west-facing adventure, with the Ayrshire Coastal Path ideal in that respect. Covering 106 miles (170km) from Glenapp Kirk to Skelmorlie, it boasts a long list of castles, beaches, harbours and picture-postcard landscapes. For a sandy beach stroll with impressive vistas, take your pick from Ayr, Troon or lesser-known gems such as Maidens. The stretch around Lendalfoot is known for its unusual coastal geology, with the brilliantly named sea stacks 'Forest of Rocks' and the 'Old and Young Laird'. Dunure is another scenic setting with its pretty harbour and crumbling castle ruins. The village has two excellent eateries, The Harbourside and The Anchorage.
