555 inmates released on licence ahead of Aidiladha
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 555 inmates nationwide were released today under the Ihsan MADANI Licensed Prisoner Release Programme (PBSL) in conjunction with the upcoming Aidiladha celebration.
In a statement today, the Malaysian Prisons Department said that the initiative aims to provide eligible inmates with the opportunity to reunite with their families and reintegrate into society, in line with national rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts.
Johor recorded the highest number of releases with 83 inmates, followed by Sabah (82), Sarawak (68), Terengganu (67), Pahang (54), Selangor (51), Penang (45), Kedah (28), Perak and Negeri Sembilan (25 each), Perlis (15) and Kelantan (12).
'The programme is carried out in conjunction with national festive celebrations to support the rehabilitation process and encourage the successful reintegration of eligible prospects into society,' the department said.
Including previous releases granted during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai, a total of 1,934 inmates have benefited from PBSL so far this year.
Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 57,779 inmates were released under the scheme, with 2024 marking the highest annual figure at 20,578, followed by 2023 (15,180), 2022 (8,412), 2021 (3,517) and 2020 (1,938).
PBSL is available to inmates serving prison sentences of under three years, as well as to vulnerable groups and pregnant women serving terms of less than four years.
To qualify, inmates must have completed rehabilitation programmes, demonstrated good behaviour and secured a suitable guarantor.

'The disaster (floods and landslides) this time was particularly challenging as it occurred during the Chinese New Year celebrations. However, the swift action and cooperation of all agencies and the local community ensured the safety and welfare of the people,' he said at a closing of Gawai and appreciation dinner for individuals involved during Northeast Monsoon 2025 at Dewan Tapah, Siburan on Friday night. On a related matter, he said a total seven flood relief centres (PPS) in Serian Division are being upgraded as a proactive measure in facing any possible future natural disasters especially during the Northeast Monsoon. He explained this PPS upgrade is part of the state government's efforts to improve infrastructure preparedness and strengthen community support systems when dealing with disaster situations. He also acknowledged the efforts of Serian Division Resident Caroline Cleophas Joseph as the Chairman of the Divisional Disaster Management Committee, along with district officers, community leaders and donors who provided assistance in various forms during the Northeast Monsoon earlier this year which affected more than 2,500 residents in Serian. 'This assistance and contribution not only saved lives, but also became a symbol of the humanity and solidarity of the Sarawakian community,' he added. He also announced a total RM780,000 in flood disaster compassionate funds have been approved by the Sarawak JPBN to be channeled to 780 heads of households who moved to PPS between Jan 28 January and February 6 this year. Six nabbed at illegal jetty for attempting to cross border
RANTAU PANJANG: Six people were arrested during a routine patrol under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan after attempting to cross the border illegally via the Gergaji illegal jetty here last night. The group, detained by the General Operations Force (GOF), comprised four foreigners and two locals. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the suspects were nabbed around 7pm upon their arrival at the Golok riverbank. "Personnel from the Ninth Battalion GOF spotted two local men, one Thai man and three Thai women at the Gergaji illegal jetty. "Checks revealed that five of the suspects did not possess valid travel documents to enter or exit Malaysia, while one Thai woman had no form of identification," he said. Datuk Nik Ros said five of the suspects were detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. "The woman arrested without identification, is held under Section 6(1)(c) of the same Act," he added. All six have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Pasir Mas district police headquarters for further action. The latest arrests bring the total number of people detained for crossing into Malaysia via illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thai border during a two-week period beginning from the recent Aidiladha celebration, to 43.
