Bardibas emerges as key transit hub for drug smuggling across Nepal-India border
Madhesh Province [Nepal], June 5 (ANI): Bardibas in Mahottari district has become a major transit hub for drug smuggling, with traffickers using the town to move marijuana from the hill districts of Nepal into India and bring controlled prescription drugs from India into Kathmandu, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Once a small roadside stop along the East-West Highway, Bardibas has seen rapid urban growth following the operation of the BP Highway, which connects the town directly to Kathmandu. This development has brought an influx of residents and businesses, but it has also coincided with the rise of illicit drug activities.
According to the Area Police Office in Bardibas, smugglers have established storage facilities throughout the town. Marijuana grown in the Chure hills is being stockpiled in Bardibas before being smuggled across the open Nepal-India border through nearby towns such as Gaushala, Ramgopalpur, and Jaleshwar. In the opposite direction, pharmaceutical drugs are brought illegally from India and distributed into Kathmandu.
Residential areas, schools, and local businesses have reportedly been affected. Authorities have found students in possession of marijuana and households storing as much as 20 kilograms. Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikash Bam stated that regular police patrols have increasingly found drugs being transported in four-wheelers. 'Even students from reputed schools are getting involved,' he said, urging stronger awareness and prevention efforts, as per reports by the Kathmandu Post.
Police believe the porous Nepal-India border has facilitated the movement of banned substances, with some Nepali youth traveling to India to procure or smuggle pharmaceutical drugs. In recent enforcement actions, police seized 40 kg of marijuana from a car in ward 11 of Bardibas Municipality and another 107.9 kg from a vehicle in Ramgopalpur. On the same day, two individuals were caught with 20 kg of marijuana on a motorcycle headed to Jaleshwar.
In another major operation, police confiscated 158 kg of marijuana from a Mahindra Scorpio parked near Shubha Swastik Hospital in Bardibas. Authorities say such busts have become routine, with vehicles including cars, motorcycles, and SUVs being used almost daily for smuggling.
Over the past 10 months, Mahottari police have seized more than 26.86 quintals of marijuana from 13 vehicles, filing 27 cases and arresting 37 individuals. During the previous fiscal year 2023-24, police confiscated 12.96 quintals and filed 10 cases.
The trend is not limited to Mahottari. According to police data, all eight districts in Madhesh Province are seeing a steady rise in marijuana trafficking, with a total of 135.69 quintals confiscated in the past 10 months alone, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Superintendent of Police Heramba Sharma said Bardibas has become a preferred route for traffickers due to its strategic location, short distances to border towns, and the availability of small vehicles for quick transport. A significant portion of marijuana seized in Mahottari reportedly originates from Makawanpur. (ANI)

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 20 (ANI): Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday launched a blistering attack on the Congress-led state government over the recent allegations of mass cheating and irregularities in the police recruitment examination, calling it 'a betrayal of the youth of Himachal Pradesh'. Thakur demanded that the government immediately constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the scam and that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu resign on moral grounds. 'The entire recruitment process has been reduced to a mockery. Videos show blatant cheating, discussions inside exam halls, and candidates solving papers in groups. This is not just mismanagement, it's criminal. If the Chief Minister has any moral standing left, he should step down,' Thakur told reporters at a press conference in Shimla. Thakur called the police recruitment drive the only significant recruitment drive in the past two and a half years of the Congress government's tenure, claiming that the entire process was compromised. 'This government shut down the Staff Selection Commission. After two and a half years, it held one police recruitman, which is now under serious question. The candidates have submitted video proof of cheating taking place inside examination halls in Shimla, Palampur Road, and Chamba,' he said. 'If the government claims transparency, then why not release the CCTV footage from these centres? What are they afraid of?,' Thakur asked. He further said that there were allegations of mobile phones being allowed inside the examination halls, and that no invigilators stopped students from openly cheating. The former CM pointed out that two individuals, Vikram and Balwinder from the Dehra area of Kangra district, were arrested in the case. But he added that just two arrests cannot cleanse a scam of this magnitude. 'Reports suggest that candidates were called to Haryana and promised success in the exam in exchange for lakhs of rupees. Transactions of up to Rs 35 lakh have been cited. Who made these promises? Who were these candidates? At least 15-16 people were summoned for investigation,' he said, adding that the matter must be investigated at a state-wide level. 'In our tenure, when similar allegations emerged, we immediately cancelled the exam and announced a SIT investigation the very next morning. We even handed over cases to the CBI when required. This government is silent and evasive.' Thakur added. Thakur warned that candidates feared the CCTV recordings could be destroyed, much like the pen drive in the Vimal Negi case, which was formatted and later recovered. Revisiting the promises made by Congress before the 2022 Assembly elections, Thakur said, Congress's 'guarantees' are now exposed, no jobs, no action. 'They promised 5 lakh government jobs in 5 years, and 1 lakh in the first year. But now the Chief Minister says they never made such a promise. I was in the Assembly when the Congress Guarantee Document was read out, which clearly mentioned the 5 lakh jobs. Why the contradiction now?,' Thakur said. He alleged that most appointments during the current regime were the result of recruitment processes initiated by the previous BJP government, for which budgetary and financial clearances were already secured. 'These are not new jobs. The only new recruitment was for police, and look what happened. Even in the nursing recruitment drive, Congress is outsourcing jobs through agencies linked to their own leaders and relatives,' he said. Thakur also criticised the outsourcing model, saying it was being used to bypass transparency and provide jobs to Congress loyalists. He also attacked the use of outsourcing agencies in nursing and other sectors, alleging that these agencies are run by Congress leaders and their relatives, with youth getting only Rs 6,000 out of the Rs 10,000 allotted per position. 'Candidates are getting Rs 6,000 while Rs 10,000 is allocated, where is the rest of the money going? To the agencies, which are run by Congress leaders. Thakur said the Congress government is struggling with internal trust issues, pointing to the resignation of a young minister and the subsequent resignation of his father, a senior cabinet minister. NHRC intervenes in assault on woman in Andhra Pradesh over husband's unpaid loan
New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report involving the public assault of a woman by a moneylender in Narayanapuram village, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. The incident, which occurred on June 16 , reportedly saw the woman tied to a tree and brutally beaten in full view of villagers--punished for her husband's failure to repay a long-standing debt. NHRC stated that according to the media account published on June 17, the woman's husband had borrowed Rs 80,000 from a local moneylender nearly three years ago. Over time, he is said to have incurred additional debts from other villagers. With repayment overdue and mounting pressure, he allegedly fled the village, abandoning his wife and three children. Left to fend for the family alone, the woman has since worked as a daily wage laborer and has been steadily repaying the debts in small installments. However, this failed to appease the moneylender, who resorted to public violence to settle the outstanding dues. The NHRC has deemed the reported incident a grave violation of human rights and human dignity. In response, it has issued formal notices to both the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, seeking a comprehensive report on the matter within two weeks. The Commission has expressed deep concern over the law enforcement's role and the need for protection of vulnerable citizens against such extrajudicial acts. (ANI)
