5 best 1980s slasher movies to watch after 'Fear Street: Prom Queen'
The 1980s were the heyday of the slasher movie, when dozens of films about masked killers slashing their way through unsuspecting, often teenage, victims made their way into theaters and onto video store shelves.
That's exactly the vibe that director and co-writer Matt Palmer aims to capture in Netflix's new hit horror movie 'Fear Street: Prom Queen,' the latest installment in the 'Fear Street' franchise. 'Prom Queen' is set in 1988, and its story of a killer stalking the prom queen finalists at Shadyside High could be lifted wholesale from a 1980s slasher movie.
I found 'Prom Queen' to be a fun, if disposable viewing experience, but as a longtime slasher-movie fan, I mainly felt inspired to go back and watch more of the real thing. If you're interested in checking out the origins of 'Fear Street: Prom Queen's" style, here are five of my favorite 1980s slasher movies to stream now.
Easily the best '80s slasher movie (and one of the best horror movies ever made), writer-director Wes Craven's haunting, hallucinatory suburban nightmare introduces Robert Englund as supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger, a deceased child murderer who now has the ability to attack people in their dreams.
Freddy is a horror icon, and Englund makes him instantly unforgettable as he terrorizes the teens of seemingly placid Springwood, Ohio.
Freddy is matched by determined teenager Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), who is convinced that her classmates are being killed in their sleep, even if no one else believes her. Nancy is a fierce but vulnerable hero, and her inner strength in standing up to Freddy is what gives 'Nightmare' its emotional power.
The subsequent franchise is uneven, but Craven's original film is a masterpiece.

The first 'Prom Night' is a lesser Jamie Lee Curtis horror entry, but this quasi-sequel — which was originally produced as a wholly unrelated movie — is much more entertaining, with a campy sense of humor and a welcome oddball tone. It's the best prom-related slasher movie, featuring the ghost of a murdered prom queen taking her revenge 30 years later.
Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Shrage) possesses the body of a current student and embarks on a reign of terror, all with the goal of being crowned prom queen once again.
As in 'Fear Street: Prom Queen,' the title is worth killing for, and director Bruce Pittman stages some inventive deaths as Mary Lou murders her way back to the top of the social hierarchy.

Summer camps are a common setting for slasher movies (including 'Fear Street: 1978'), and 'Sleepaway Camp' is one of the most memorable, not just for its notorious shock ending.
It's appealingly off-kilter even before then, starting with Desiree Gould's unhinged performance as the controlling aunt who sends introverted main character Angela Baker (Felissa Rose) off to sleepaway camp, where she's relentlessly bullied by the other campers.
As Angela's tormentors start dying one by one, often in creatively gruesome ways, writer-director Robert Hiltzik keeps the audience on edge, questioning Angela's mental state and her status as both a victim and possible perpetrator.
The movie's handling of queer identity is both bold and potentially problematic, but it looks more groundbreaking as time has gone on. The mix of sexuality, trauma and vengeance makes 'Sleepaway Camp' into a stark, brutal experience.

Noted mystery novelist Rita Mae Brown originally wrote the script for this clever film as a slasher-movie parody, and while director Amy Holden Jones presents it in a more straightforward manner, it's still full of sly humor.
It might be a stretch to call 'The Slumber Party Massacre' feminist, but the filmmakers shift the perspective of the typically male-dominated genre, and there are plenty of opportunities to poke fun at the killer's very phallic weapon, a giant drill.
There are also plenty of opportunities for the teen-girl characters to take their clothes off, as they get together for a sleepover at one girl's house while her parents are away. A massacre ensues, courtesy of an escaped murderer, but there are at least as many fake-outs as actual murders, and Jones maintains a playful visual style even as things get nasty.

The high point of the mostly glum 'Friday the 13th' franchise is this goofy sixth installment, which brings in self-aware humor to liven up yet another story about hockey-masked murderer Jason Voorhees taking out a series of interchangeable victims.
The series has been around long enough at this point to have its own recognizable formula, and writer-director Tom McLoughlin toys with audience expectations, making cheeky references to the movie's own absurdity. McLoughlin also makes Jason (played this time by C.J. Graham) into a completely supernatural force, bypassing any need to explain his frequent resurrections.
While past installments could be salacious and sexualized, 'Jason Lives' captures more of a throwback monster-movie vibe, making it almost wholesome in comparison to the frequently sleazy slasher genre. It's a lively, bright spot in a franchise that is more often grim and repetitive.

After eight episodes of deception, betrayal and gunshots to the face, the Buckley family's drama reaches an explosive conclusion in the finale of Netflix's The Waterfront, leaving fans to wonder… what's next? One thing's for sure, after getting killed by Cane during the family's mission to rescue Bree, we've definitely seen the last of Topher Grace as unhinged heroin smuggler Grady. 'We wrote that character with Topher in mind,' series creator Kevin Williamson tells TVLine. We wanted someone who was lovable and fun and funny … and to turn them into a psychopath. It's a lot of fun. Give a funny man a gun and see what he does with it.' But just because one Buckley nemesis has been taken out, that doesn't mean the family is out of the woods. Given their laundry list of questionable actions, there's no shortage of ne'er do wells looking to work with (or against) the Buckleys in future seasons. And from what we see in the finale, there's also plenty of trouble brewing within the family itself. Below, Kevin Williamson addresses some of those lingering finale developments, teasing how they might affect a second season of The Waterfront. Grade the Netflix series below, then read on for what the future could hold for the Buckley family. After killing Grady on the boat (two shots to the face oughta do it!), Cane has a brief-but-crucial moment with Harlan at the hospital. 'Buckley Seafood was a family business — me and my father, side by side,' Harlan tells Cane. 'That's how I've always known it. That's why I wanted you to stay. I didn't want to be alone.' Cane doesn't say anything back, but his silent nod and teary eyes speak volumes. 'I think they they peeled a few layers of the onion,' Williamson says. 'I don't think they've gotten to the core answer of who they are to each other as father and son, but I do think Cane got an answer that he wanted. He has always wondered why his father treated him a certain way and why that dynamic was what it was. Cane is wrestling with the roads not taken. He wanted one thing out of life and ended up with something else, and he's got to get right with it. Part of that means fixing things with his father, so I think he has mended a lot with his dad. There's a lot more understanding, but I don't know if they've reconciled completely. There's going to be more stumbling for them to do as father and son before they fully repair that relationship.' The finale is especially harrowing for Bree, who wakes up on Grady's boat after being kidnapped, only to discover that her son Diller has stowed away to rescue her. Grady ends up shooting Bree in the leg and pushing her overboard, but thanks to Diller's quick-thinking, she remains afloat on a life raft. After tying her leg with a belt to stop the bleeding, Bree hallucinates a conversation with her younger self about witnessing her grandfather's murder. 'You were just a girl, you couldn't have done anything,' she says. 'I've got you.' With her last ounce of strength, Bree sends up a flare for help, and the finale ends with her recovering in the hospital. It's an important breakthrough, especially when she refuses heavy pain medication to avoid risking her sobriety, but Bree's life is far from fixed. 'We've just sort of tapped into the surface of her trauma from her past and how that could heal her,' Williamson says. 'But will it? We're a puzzle, as human beings, and I think she still has some missing pieces.' One of the finale's biggest question marks is where things stand between Cane and Peyton, following his brief affair with Jenna. When he tells his wife that it's over, and that he wants them to be good again, she seems strangely unfazed. 'You and me, we're fine, understand?' she says as she kisses him and beings to prepare his dinner. 'I'm gonna see to it.' She says a lot without actually saying much at all, so let's go to Williamson for some much-needed intel: 'I think Peyton knows what she wants, and she's going to get it,' Williamson says. 'Early on, she makes this big statement about how she's never going to be like Belle, but I think she might be wrong about that. The journey for her is going to be, well, how does she fix things? How is she going to make her husband love her? I think it's going to be a great journey for her. It's going to be very surprising, and she's going to take a few left turns.' Following Wes' botched land deal with the Buckleys, the finale ends with Emmett handing Wes over to Belle on a silver platter. More specifically, we see Wes being tied to a chair and tortured, as Emmett reintroduces Belle — this time as Wes' new boss. 'In the first season, Harlan is the patriarch of the family, and Belle has always taken her place, puppeting him and controlling what happens to the Buckley family behind the scenes,' Williamson explains. 'All of her little shenanigans have been done behind Harlan, and in the shadows of Harlan, and now she's ready to shove him out of the way, stand front and center, and really take the reins.' Season 1 of America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders first graced the screen in June 2024, and the docuseries became a huge hit for Netflix. The second season debuted this month on June 18, and fans already want more. Here's what we know about season 3 of America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Netflix has not officially announced a season 3, but the team has been teasing the audition process for the coming year. They even shared a finalized roster of 36 cheerleaders this June for training camp 2025, and a clip featuring guest judge, Kacey Musgraves—who would be a huge get for a new season. Each season is an examination of the young women auditioning to perform on the cheerleading team for the Dallas Cowboys, following those who make it to training camp as they grow and develop their skills. Season 2 followed both the rookies and the seasoned veterans who will ultimately find their place in one of the 36 spots on the official squad. Training camp is led by DCC director Kelli Finglass and head choreographer Judy Trammell, who will most likely be back. Musgraves seems to be involved in some capacity, and some girls will be returning from past seasons. The team also shared their 'rookie roundup.' Fan favorite Dayton might make an appearance, though this fan-made TikTok explains she did not make the final round. If the show is definitely continuing, it seems likely that it would be released next summer, since season 1 and 2 both came out in June, one year apart. This post will be updated.
