Sabah, China to strengthen strategic ties - Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU (June 18): Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor is confident that the strategic relationship between Sabah and the People's Republic of China will continue to strengthen through diplomatic ties and various joint development initiatives.
The Chief Minister expressed this when receiving a courtesy visit from the newly appointed Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zhu Xinglong, at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Hajiji congratulated Dr Zhu on his appointment and welcomed him to serve in Sabah.
'I believe Dr Zhu's presence will provide new momentum to the longstanding bilateral cooperation between Sabah and China, particularly in the sectors of investment, trade, tourism, education and others,' he said.
Hajiji also emphasised the State Government's commitment to providing a conducive and investor-friendly environment to attract more Chinese companies to invest in Sabah, especially in strategic industrial areas.
The introductory visit marked Dr Zhu's first official call since being appointed as the Consul General in Kota Kinabalu, succeeding Dr Huang Shifang.

THE State Government will continue to strengthen the implementation of inclusive and comprehensive development policies through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap in its efforts to ensure sustained progress and the well-being of the people in the state. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that since its introduction, the policy has had a significant impact, particularly in areas such as economic recovery, investment, agriculture, human capital development, and public welfare. 'Alhamdulillah, we are witnessing growing investment activities and increased state revenue collection in recent years. This is proof of the effectiveness of the government's approach,' he said, in his speech during the Istiadat Pengurniaan Darjah-Darjah Kebesaran in conjunction with the official 74th birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu, Saturday. He added that the State Government is also focusing on the development of the agricultural sector, which is a key contributor to ensuring food security in Sabah. Among the initiatives were establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board (LPBS) and the launch of the Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP) aimed at increasing the state's rice Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) from 24 per cent in 2025 to sixty per cent by 2030. 'This is a strategic step to ensure Sabah becomes more self-reliant in basic food production, thereby reducing dependence on imports,' he said. Advertisement He added that human capital development, especially among the younger generation, remains a top priority for the government through various youth development programmes such as skills training, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and sports. Hajiji said the State Government has also approved the establishment of the Sabah State TVET Council as a platform to coordinate and monitor technical and vocational education and training to meet current industry needs. 'We want to ensure Sabah's youths are equipped with the knowledge and skills relevant to contribute to the development of the state and the nation.' Hajiji also emphasised that the strong relationship and close cooperation with the Federal Government will continue to be upheld to ensure Sabah is not left behind in the national development agenda. He said the State Government highly values the various forms of assistance and initiatives provided by the Federal Government, including in infrastructure, health, education, and security. He expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for the Federal Government's commitment to defending Sabah's rights and sovereignty, including the successful rejection of external claims on the state at the international level. Rival groups again hold rallies

Kota Kinabalu: The Gerakan Anak Muda dan Mahasiswa Anak Sabah (Gammas) reaffirmed its strong support for the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, citing numerous contributions to the state's development and the welfare of youth and students. Organizer Noridi @ Noraidi Maya said Gammas members, particularly students, have directly benefited from initiatives introduced under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-Pakatan Harapan (GRS-PH) government. 'We support Hajiji's leadership because he has brought significant change and progress to Sabah. "Students have received various forms of assistance such as the Sentosa aid (RM300), Budi aid (RM1,500–RM2,000), Subfly travel ticket subsidies, scholarships, and laptop assistance,' Noridi said during a peaceful rally at Taman Chong Thien Vun, Saturday. He also thanked Hajiji for thwarting an alleged cartel that attempted to monopolise Sabah's mineral resources. Gammas urged all parties to stop politicising the ongoing case involving mineral licences in Sabah, particularly those linked to the cartel. The group said investigations should be left to the proper authorities such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police. Advertisement Noridi also called on the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of a Political Funding Act to prevent future cases of corruption linked to political donations or campaign financing. 'We don't want good politicians to be dragged into corruption cases simply because they're trying to raise funds to help their constituents. "Many rural communities turn to their elected representatives for help during emergencies like death, fires, and floods. The absence of clear laws on political donations opens the door to abuse,' he said. Commenting on longstanding issues such as water, electricity, and roads in Sabah, Noridi said these are legacy problems that should not be overly politicised. 'We urge the public to support the government's development plans rather than use these issues to sow division,' said Noridi. Meanwhile, hundreds of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students, together with youth groups and civil society organisations, marched through the streets of the city centre, Saturday, in a demonstration known as Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0. President of Suara Mahasiswa Sabah Fadhil Kasim said the protest called for government accountability, stronger anti-corruption reforms and urgent resolution to long-standing infrastructure issues affecting the campus. The march began at Suria Sabah and moved through Pasar Besar Kota Kinabalu, Anjung Kinabalu, Centre Point, and BKK, before concluding at Lintasan Deasoka on Gaya Street. Despite persistent rain, the crowd remained spirited, chanting and holding up handmade banners throughout the two-hour procession. He condemned the ongoing water supply crisis at UMS. 'We have endured long enough without water. This problem has gone on for years,' he said. Fadhil criticised the explanation by the Sabah State Water Department, which attributed the issue to a misunderstanding. 'They say it's a misunderstanding, but is it a misunderstanding when students can't shower for days and have to collect rainwater? Is that acceptable? No!' he said. The student body again demanded that UMS initiate legal action against the Sabah State Water Department, dismissing the university's claim that it could not sue due to 'government-to-government' protocol. He also called for reform of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), urging for it to become an independent body with bipartisan parliamentary oversight. 'We want the MACC to be a truly independent agency, as promised in election manifestos. But today, that promise has not been fulfilled.' He said while the rally remained peaceful, tensions briefly rose when several unknown individuals appeared with banners claiming they had been paid to participate. The protesters firmly denied the accusation. Anti-dumping duties on CRC imports from China, Japan to be maintained
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has completed the administrative (sunset) review and reached a final affirmative determination to continue imposing anti-dumping duties on imports of cold rolled coils (CRC) of iron or non-alloy steel over 1,300mm in width from China and Japan. This excludes CRCs used for automotive and transformer finwall applications or tin mill black plate. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) said the rate of anti-dumping duties for Chinese companies are Angang Steel Company Limited at 4.82%, Maanshan Iron and Steel Co Ltd (4.76%), Shougang Jingtang United Iron & Steel Co Ltd (8.74%) and other producers and exporters (26.38%). 'The rate of anti-dumping duties for Japanese producers and exporters will be imposed at 26.39%. The Customs Department will enforce the collection of the duties on the imports of the subject merchandise for a period of five years, effective from June 23, 2025, to June 22, 2030,' it said yesterday, Bernama reported. The ministry also noted that the government has made a negative final determination to terminate the imposition of anti-dumping duties and the investigations on the imports of the subject merchandise originating or exported from South Korea and Vietnam, effective from June 23.
