India for addressing asymmetries in cotton sector between developing, developed nations at WTO
India has stated that cotton is a sensitive domestic issue and pitched for addressing the long-standing asymmetries in the sector between developing and developed members of the World Trade Organisation, according to a
WTO
note.
According to the report of the chairperson of the WTO's committee on agriculture, India has reaffirmed the need to deliver on long-standing mandates, including finding a permanent solution to the issue of public stockholding of foodgrains, special safeguard mechanism and cotton, particularly in view of the forthcoming Ministerial Conference (MC) being hosted by Cameroon.
MC is the highest decision-making body of the WTO. Its 14th meeting is scheduled for March 26-29 next year in Cameroon.
"India emphasised that cotton was an important and sensitive matter domestically with a situation similar to that of some of the other cotton-producing countries in terms of farmers' vulnerabilities since cotton is grown in arid areas by small and marginal farmers," it said.
The country has underscored the importance of addressing the long-standing asymmetries in the cotton sector between developing and developed members with regard to their respective entitlements to the aggregate measurement of support beyond the de minimis level.

GUNTUR: The State government has launched the procurement of Black Burley tobacco through Markfed, assuring farmers that every leaf will be purchased. Minister for Agriculture, Marketing, and Cooperation K Atchannaidu inaugurated the procurement centre at the Paruchuru Agricultural Market Yard on Thursday, reinforcing the state's commitment to agricultural welfare. Leading a farmers' rally from Paruchuru junction to the market yard, the minister inspected facilities and announced that HDR and HDM grade tobacco would be procured at Rs 12,000 per quintal, while HDX grade would be bought at Rs 6,000 per quintal. This marks the first-ever direct procurement of Black Burley tobacco by the State. Atchannaidu said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is prioritizing farmer support with subsidies, timely payments, and assured crop procurement. He noted that Rs 1,650 crore in pending paddy dues had already been cleared. The state has intervened this year to stabilize prices of chilli, mango, coconut, and tobacco. Farmers were urged not to fall for private companies' misleading promises and to maintain quality standards to meet export requirements. The initiative is expected to benefit farmers with over Rs 500 crore through five procurement centres across the state. Agriculture Special Chief Secretary B. Rajasekhar said the government aims to procure 20 million kg of tobacco, with the Chief Minister reviewing progress every two days. Markfed MD Manjeer Zilani Saman stated that procurement would be conducted online, with a 20% moisture cap.

Cabinet to press Centre for relief for mango farmers
Bengaluru: The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday decided to exert pressure on the central government to provide relief for the state's mango growers, who are facing severe distress due to a sharp decline in market prices during the current harvest season. Addressing reporters after the meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said the cabinet discussed the plight of mango growers, especially concerns raised by Ministers from Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Bengaluru rural and Mumbai-Karnataka region. 'There have been huge losses and the Chief Minister has been advised regarding providing relief. The CM has instructed Agriculture Minister Cheluvarayaswamy to discuss with the Union Minister once again,' he said. The state Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy has been instructed to visit Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in New Delhi if required and 'put pressure on the Centre to get as much higher relief possible'. Asked whether the state government has committed to providing any relief to mango growers, the Minister said, 'No, we are putting pressure on the central government and if our share has to be there in that, it will be considered.' Regarding CM Siddaramaiah's letter to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw the ban on entry of 'Totapuri Mangoes' into his state, he said the issue was raised by Minister K H Muniyappa, but there was no detailed discussion on this. Siddaramaiah had also written to the Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Shivaraj Singh Chouhan last week, seeking an urgent Price Deficiency Payment and Market Intervention Scheme for mango farmers in Karnataka.

Traditional crop culture scheme unveiled
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has introduced a scheme to revive the traditional crop and food culture of the State and will focus on the conservation and marketing of such agricultural produce, officials said. The programme will be implemented in 25 blocks across 15 districts in the State and is expected to directly benefit approximately 60,000 farmers. This will cover areas near biodiversity hotspots and ecologically sensitive regions for a period of five years from 2025-26. Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment department launched the scheme - Revival and Sustainable Intensification of Forgotten Food & Neglected Crops in Odisha - on Wednesday. The initiative will also help generate additional financial support for the cultivators, especially those belonging to the tribal community. The scheme has been developed under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and has been formally approved by the government. The expected outcomes of the scheme include 'documenting numerous landraces and recipes, increasing their availability, conducting nutritional profiling, developing an open digital knowledge platform and positioning Odisha as a global model for reviving forgotten food & neglected crops', said Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary, Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment department.
