Aussie Davidson in the hunt at LPGA Classic
Australia's Karis Davidson is two shots off the lead after three rounds of the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan.
But the 26-year-old will be chasing six players on Sunday with fellow Aussies Grace Kim and Minjee Lee a further two shots back.
Sentimental favourite Lexi Thompson birdied two of the final three holes for a share of the third-round lead on Saturday in a bid to win for the first time in just over six years.
Thompson sits atop the leader board alongside five others, after shooting a 4-under 68, rebounding with birdies on 16 and 18 after driving into the water and making a bogey on the par-5 14th.
"Not my best ball-striking day," Thompson said." But I scrambled very well and stayed positive, patient, and that's what it's kind of all about."
At 11-under 205 at the Blythefield County Club, she was tied with Nanna Koerstz Madsen (68), Madelene Sagstrom (67), Sofia Garcia (68), Hye-Jin Choi (69) and Carlota Ciganda (69).
Davidson finished the day in seventh on 207 with Lee and Kim tied for 12th on 209.
Thompson was back on top a year after losing a playoff to Lilia Vu on the tree-lined course.
"Everybody is going to come out swinging," she said.
"Good weather tomorrow, so I know birdies will have to be made and I'll have to go pin-seeking. I will hope for the best, go out there and embrace the opportunity, and really love on the fans."
The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
She's making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas.
Garcia had the lead at 13 under after 12 holes, then bogeyed the next three.
"I'm happy I was able to get it back together," Garcia said.
"Made a really good chip out on 16. Was able to have a good finish."

Aussie NBA star Luke Travers makes surprise cameo on Roaming Brian after Fremantle's win over Essendon
Aussie NBA star Luke Travers has made a cheeky dig at close friend Luke Jackson after the Fremantle big man's standout performance against Essendon on Thursday night. Jackson played arguably the best game of his career, kicking three goals to go with 48 hitouts, 21 disposals and 10 clearances as the Dockers romped to a 41-point win. But that wasn't enough to impress Travers, who played down the performance when asked by Channel 7's Brian Tayler on Roaming Brian. 'He was all right ... could've been a little better here and there,' Travers joked. Jackson and Travers both attended Willetton Senior High School in Perth and have remained close friends. Travers, 23, plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA after stints with Perth Wildcats and Melbourne United in the NBL. He is in Australia during the NBA off-season, spending time with friends and family. Decked out in a Fremantle kit, Travers has around a month back home before heading back to the USA for pre-season training. The 201cm is one of 14 Aussies making waves in the NBA. 'It's really good for the future of the Australian team, exciting times,' he added. Travers is about to link up with a pair of fellow Aussie NBA stars in Melbourne. 'I'm about to spend the next month in Melbourne with Josh (Giddey) and Dyson Daniels,' he said. 'It'll be good competition. We always like going against each other, so it'll be good.' Fremantle (9-5) posted their fifth win on the trot with the 16.8 (104) to 9.9 (63) triumph over Essendon. Star Dockers recruit Shai Bolton ruffled a few feathers when he pointed Essendon players in the direction of the scoreboard during the second quarter, with the scoreboard reading 51-28 at the time. 'I didn't see that, but I like the edge he plays with,' Longmuir said. 'I think largely Shai valued the right things tonight. I thought his pressure and contests were really strong from the get-go. 'He plays with a bit of flair and he likes to get in the opposition's face. I didn't see the pointing at the scoreboard, but I don't mind the way he played.' Veteran Nat Fyfe, who had spent the previous two games as the sub, earned a rare start but managed just 11 disposals and one clearance before being subbed out in the final quarter. Fyfe spent periods stationed in attack to help fill the void left by Sam Switkowski (hamstring), and Longmuir was happy with the former captain's efforts. 'I thought he ran some really good patterns,' Longmuir said. 'I was really happy with the way he approached the role. I thought some of his physicality through the middle of the ground was great.' Fremantle have the chance to make it six wins on the trot when they host St Kilda on Sunday week.

Kookaburras cruise to fourth straight Pro League win
The Kookaburras have continued their hot form in Belgium with a convincing win over Ireland in hockey's Pro League. In a week where they had already twice defeated India 3-2 in Antwerp, the Australians proved too strong on Tuesday night against the bottom-placed Europeans, winning 6-1. The defending champions surged up to second in the standings after their fourth straight win, sitting on 21 points from their 11 matches, trailing only the Netherlands (32) and sitting just above Argentina (20), with games in hand on both. Up 2-1 at halftime, thanks to Jeremy Hayward's 123rd career goal and a Blake Govers penalty stroke, the Aussies scored three times in a blistering third quarter to put the contest beyond doubt en route to their biggest win of the season. "They knocked off Belgium yesterday, and we knew they would've wanted to come out hard and get another win so I'm proud of the boys to come out the way they did and put on a good performance," Cooper Burns said. Burns was joined on the scoresheet after the main break by Connar Otterbach, his maiden international goal, and Jack Welch, while Govers got his second. The two sides face off again at the same venue on Wednesday (11.30pm AEST) before heading to London for back-to-back contests against England. "We will make a few tweaks, we'll take a look at what we can do better and we know Ireland will come out strong again, they'll want to win and play hard hockey so we'll come back with a plan and we'll stick to that," Cooper added. Golf: Karis Davidson among nine Aussies at Women's PGA Championship
An extended hiatus from golf last year has helped propel Australia's Karis Davidson into arguably career-best form heading into this week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship, her first major in 14 months. The Gold Coast 26-year-old, one of nine Australians in the field, is high on confidence after finishing in a tie for seventh at last week's Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan. 'It was really nice feeling, you know, in the mix to win the event,' Davidson said. 'I'm enjoying (golf) a lot more now, and when you enjoy it, you try harder in more difficult situations on the course.' However, that enjoyment was missing last year, which led to her taking a lengthy break from the game. In that time, Davidson completed a six-month TAFE aged care and disability services course. 'I really wanted to do something productive and just completely different to golf,' she said. 'It was the best thing I've ever done. I learned a lot over the six months. 'After that, I knew that I wanted to play golf for myself because before I felt like I was just doing it for other people, and I think that was unhealthy. 'I was just so wrapped up in my own mind. I just had to take time away from it. 'I'm out here because I want to be, not because it feels like the only option.' Davidson was yet to set her goals for the event starting in Texas on Thursday night (AEST) at the PGA Frisco Fields Ranch East layout but promised to 'commit to every shot'. 'That's such an important thing. You need to be 100 per cent invested in the club and the shot you've chosen,' she said. 'It's going to be a hot week, so I need to be really good with pre, post and during round hydration and what I'm eating. 'I'm trying not to make results-based goals. Obviously, everyone wants to win, if I do those little things well mentally, it'll give me the best chance for the best result I can get.' The other Australians in the field this week are Minjee Lee, Hannah Green, Steph Kyriacou, Gabriela Ruffels, Grace Kim, Cassie Porter, Robyn Choi and Hira Naveed. 'All the (Australian) girls that are out on the tour are hard working, and they're all very resilient,' Davidson said. 'They're all quite laid-back and good with stress. That definitely helps with this type of career. 'The support that we get in Australia with coaches, trainers, psychologists and funding really puts us ahead of other countries in regards to support and encouraging us to do better.'
