McDonald's Chiikawa Collab Causes Chaos and Controversy

McDonald's Chiikawa Collab Causes Chaos and Controversy

Tokyo Weekender21-05-2025

McDonald's Japan released its highly anticipated
Happy Set (Happy Meal)
collaboration with popular character series
Chiikawa
on May 16. It sold out— in just two days.
The collaboration features exclusive Happy Meal toys with various
Chiikawa
characters donning McDonald's staff uniforms. The first wave of toy releases — including a McDonald's cup-shaped pen holder with the titular character Chiikawa, a plastic calendar with the character Hachiware, a small container shaped like Usagi flipping a pancake and a rolling car featuring all of the characters — was scheduled to run from May 16 to May 22. However, McDonald's released a
statement
on May 18, notifying fans and customers that sales have ended prematurely due to most restaurants selling out of Happy Meals much earlier than anticipated.
And while fan frenzy during new merchandise release days is typically nothing to cause a double-take, this particular occasion sparked quite the controversy, as viral social media posts showed alleged scalpers bulk-ordering Happy Meals solely to acquire the limited-edition toys and resell them at a markup.

The promotion instantly became a chaotic event. An
X post
from release day got nearly 11 million views, after anonymously depicting a supposed scalper carrying a giant overflowing bag of Chiikawa toy boxes. The text translates, 'From a certain C-country…' — taking a Sinophobic turn for what was supposed to be a fun prize drop for children and fans to enjoy.
Below the post, comments flooded with similar discriminatory sentiments. The post's top comment, with 169,000 views and 2,600 likes, suggested implementing the
Kyokujitsu-ki
imperialist rising sun flag or statements like 'long live Japan' into product packaging to dissuade resale in China. Another user angrily remarked how these individuals are 'anti-Japan, but want Japanese products.'

Tension and frustration grew throughout the weekend. Another
post
went viral on X with over 16 million views. The video shows a McDonald's restaurant overrun with Happy Meal bags covering every counter surface in sight. The text claims that scalpers placed bulk mobile orders, snatched the coveted toys out of the takeout bags — and then abandoned the orders. The toys can't be purchased by themselves, so customers must buy the meal to receive a
Chiikawa
toy. With food continuing to pile up and some even spilling on the floor, it appears that McDonald's employees were forced to dispose of some of the innumerable uneaten meals.
Many users reposted the video of food trays being chucked into the garbage bins, one X post with 24 million views perpetuating the narrative of Chinese resellers 'tarnishing childhood traditions.'
While unverified allegations and Sinophobia continued to run rampant amid the mayhem, other users added disclaimers through X's user-submitted
'added context'
feature to bring awareness to the fact that there is currently no evidence that the scalpers were of Chinese origin, or that all of the Happy Meals in the viral video were bulk-ordered solely for the toys.
While McDonald's policy limited each guest to buy four Happy Meals, it seems like that rule was quickly overlooked. Toys immediately started to pop up on resale websites such as Mercari, for about six or seven times their original retail price. Some listings raised their markups to jaw-dropping levels such as ¥100,000 for a complete set of the four toys. Happy Meals start at ¥510.
Preparing for Upcoming Round Two
To the dismay of fans who were looking forward to getting their own Chiikawa and friends toys, McDonald's announced that the first wave of the collection has been prematurely suspended. The official statement thanks customers for sales far exceeding initial expectations, but does not mention any of the weekend controversy pertaining to food waste and scalper loopholes.
The second installment of the collection release is still scheduled for May 23. The second wave features new exclusive toys, including a Chiikawa memo set, a Hachiware photo frame, an Usagi sticker dispenser and a Momonga pencil cap.
Round two is intended to run through May 29, though based on the previous release it does not seem likely that that'll be the case.
Chiikawa's Kawaii Empire
Chiikawa
originated as an online manga series written and illustrated by the
mangaka
known as Nagano. The series is named after the main character, Chiikawa (which translates to 'small and cute'), and follows adventures from daily life with friends like Hachiware, Usagi, Kurimanju and Furuhonya.
The printed version of the series now has seven volumes, and has sold a total of over 2.7 million copies. In 2022, an anime television adaptation produced by animation studio Doga Kobo premiered on
Fuji TV. Currently 260 episodes have been released.
Fans of the series often cite their love of Chiikawa's relatability — the series explores themes of friendship, growing up and the everyday struggles that come along with it. Chiikawa's failures and continued persistence resonate with viewers who are experiencing similar hurdles.

Burger King going on tour in Japan, visiting areas where no restaurants exist yet

By SoraNews24 Although the fast food market in Japan is large, it can be really tough to crack. Many have tried to cross over from the USA but only a few have reached the status of McDonald's or KFC. Taco Bell arrived amid great fanfare but now seems to be barely hanging on and Wendy's has formed some kind of symbiotic relationship with a Japanese chain to maintain its presence here. Burger King, on the other hand, has shown itself to be a real scrapper when it comes to getting a piece of the Japanese market. For years now, they've been coming up with innovative ideas and creative campaigns to keep people thinking about them. Their efforts have been paying off too, and the number of locations in Japan has nearly quadrupled over the past five years to 281 branches today. There's still room to grow, however, and Burger King is ready to head out on tour to explore strange new prefectures, to seek out new customer bases and new food courts, to boldly go where no Whopper has gone before. Burger King is fueling up their food truck and preparing to kick off King On Tour 2025. Its first stop will be the Sasebo City Sports and Culture Center in Nagasaki Prefecture from 20 to 22 June at the same time the PJF Pickleball Japan Open Sasebo in Japan is held. This is no coincidence as Burger King recently became an official sponsor of the pro pickleball league. ▼ The Burger King tour truck will be tastefully wood-paneled. Those in the area can grab a classic Whopper with Cheese and a can of Coca-Cola or Coca-Cola Zero for 1,000 yen. Also available for a limited time is the Spicy BBQ Whopper and cola, also for 1,000 yen. This burger has the same flame-grilled all-beef patty as the Whopper but is flavored with two sauces: the rich and slightly bitter Bull's-Eye Barbecue Sauce and a Special Spicy Sauce that has the kick of chili peppers, the umami of garlic, and the complexity of the fermented bean chili paste doubanjiang. And of course, it wouldn't be Burger King and pickleball collab event without the new, limited-edition Pickleball Burger consisting of three all-beef patties and 11 pickles served on a rice bun with a cola for 2,000 yen. Bearing in mind that this is a food truck rather than a proper restaurant, quantities will be limited to between 300 and 400 servings. On the other hand, everyone who purchases a burger combo from the truck will receive commemorative stickers including ones with the name of the location and in this case, a Pickleball Japan logo. This is just the start of King On Tour 2025, which will run until the end of the year, and Burger King is currently accepting suggestions on where to take their truck next. Just reply to their dedicated tweet with your requested location and the hashtag #バーガーキングを呼ぼう (#CallBurgerKing) before 9 July and they'll consider it. ▼ This tweet right here The chosen locations will be announced in August, so keep your eyes peeled because even if you didn't call it, the Burger King truck might still be rolling into your area before too long. McDonald's Japan's Very Hungry Caterpillar Happy Meal toys are very cute【Photos】

Classic children's literature star takes big appetite to McDonald's. We've seen a number of McDonald's Japan's Happy Meal toys featuring beloved children's franchises such as Chiikawa, Super Mario, and Sanrio. Today we're looking at yet another, but this time it's not a Japanese anime or video game series that's in the spotlight, but a classic work of American children's literature. As of June 13, McDonald's Japan's Happy Meals, or Happy Sets, as they're called in Japanese, each come with a The Very Hungry Caterpillar toy, based on the star of the 1969 picture book from author and illustrator Eric Carle. Though not a homegrown hero, the little (and temporary) caterpillar's cute artwork has made the book well-known and much-loved in Japan too. McDonald's Japan's Very Hungry Caterpillar lineup consists of six toys split up into two batches. With the first group available between June 13 and 19, most of the toys have some sort of water connection, like the Apple Bubble Blower, based on the Very Hungry Caterpillar's meal on its first day. Flipping it open reveals that the rest of the caterpillar is curled up to act as a bubble-blowing ring and rests inside a reservoir for bubble liquid, which you'll need to source separately and pour in. Also part of the first batch is the Sunflower Waterwheel. Spoiler alert: this one shows the book's protagonist at both the start and end of his character arc, with the butterfly resting on the flower and the caterpillar hanging out on one of its leaves below. The blossom is actually a water wheel, and as you pour water in the flower spins and the leaves shimmy, giving it a dancing effect that doesn't require any batteries. ▼ As for what we're using to pour the water, we'll get to that a little later. Rounding out the first round of toys is the Tree Stump Bucket, which lets you reposition the caterpillar depending on where you want the handle to be. Officially, this is for playing with in the bath, park sandbox, or on the beach, but there's nothing stopping you from using it as a little decretive container for whatever you'd like to store inside. Moving on to the second round of Very Hungry Caterpillar toys, which will be available starting June 20, we come to the character's fourth-day fare with the unusually (but not inaccurately) named Hiding Strawberry Shower. The shy little caterpillar starts off with only a bit of its head sticking out of the fruit, but submerge the strawberry and it comes out to get a better look around as the toy fills with water. Squeezing it then pours the water out with a showerhead-style multi-flow and the caterpillar retreats back inside. The Leaf Board is the most figure-like toy in the line, but still has some functional play with-ability, either as a ring toss game on dry land or a balance game in the tub. ▼ Or you could go for the double challenge of a bathtime ring toss game, if you're not worried about splashes from missed throws. Finally, we promised we'd explain the spout we were using to pour water into the Sunflower Waterwheel up above, so now it's time to pay off that foreshadowing with the Flower Watering Can. In addition to the pitcher-style watering can, you get a base piece and three flat flower illustrations in the style of Carle's artwork. Well, they start out flat anyway. Pour a little water on them though… …and they perk right up, with their petals stretching out until the material dries, at which point you can water them again. The second batch of Very Hungry Caterpillar toys will be available from June 20 to 26, and from June 27 McDonald's will be giving out remaining toys from both batches while supplies last.
