'He won't come back': Ribeiro's WC form worry Sundowns fans
Mamelodi Sundowns fans worry they might lose their star player, Lucas Ribeiro next season.
The 26-year-old forward has been instrumental in Downs' FIFA Club World Cup campaign so far. The Brazilians have won one match, lost another in the group stages and will need a win to go through into the next round.
Having joined Sundowns in 2023, Ribeiro was unknown, having had unsuccessful stints in France and Belgium. In the two seasons he has played for Masandawana, the Brazilian attacker has scored 30 goals in 55 matches, winning two league titles.
This weekend, he scored a brilliant solo goal against Borussia Dortmund during his team's 4-3 defeat. Football fans praised the forward for his performance throughout the match. The Brazilian will have the biggest game of his life when he faces his home team, Fluminense, on Wednesday.
Some fans are worried that Ribeiro might decide to join a European team during the pre-season and dump Sundowns.
@MrFootyBets_ wrote: 'That's a raw talent. Ribeiro is going to Europe after this tourney.'
@KhosiNationFTV wrote: 'Ribeiro's chances of leaving Sundowns go up by each minute he plays this club World Cup.'
'Can some team in Europe buy that Ribeiro? He has been terrorising former big teams in South Africa like Kaizer Chiefs. Thanks in advance for your indulgence…' tweeted @Skipper_0ne.
'We are losing Ribeiro guy another performance like today's in the match Vs Fluminense, and he's a gone boy Rayners too might get an Eastern Europe transfer if he scores in the next match,' tweeted @DatDude_Gwetse.

All you need to know about the four new Chiefs youngsters This is what the club said about Thulani Mabaso in January 2023: A defensive midfielder, he has been here since the age of 14. Heading into his fourth year as part of our development, he has been taught in the Chiefs way and is fully immersed in the culture of the Club. Another left-footed player with the ability to pick out teammates with long and short passes, he is very solid at the back and can get the team moving up front rapidly. He was born in 2004.' As you'll know by now, Chiefs are heading to the land of Dennis Bergkamp, Virgil van Dijk and Wesley Sneijder for their European pre-season tour adventure. The Glamour Boys jet out on 03 July and conclude the tour on 19 July. It should be a fun fortnight! George Matlou, somewhat surprisingly, will be on the flight. George Matlou will travel to the Netherlands to tour with the Chiefs squad. Image: The Citizen At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that has dwindled dramatically. In 27 league appearances last season, he only got four goals and an assist. His decision-making can also be questioned. Renowned for his thunderous strikes from both open play and set-pieces, Mokoena was once again instrumental in helping Sundowns secure their eighth consecutive league title, featuring in 22 matches this season. With two goals and three assists to his name, what truly stands out is his consistency and the quality he brings to set-piece situations, providing both control and attacking threat. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞: Relebohile Mofokeng's goals at the FNB Stadium in the 2024/2025 season 🔥#SSDiski | @SamsungSA — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) June 12, 2025 Relebohile Mofokeng At just 20-years old, the Pirates winger has shown maturity beyond his years. He has carried the weight of expectation at times, becoming the go-to man for Orlando Pirates when moments of inspiration were needed — and he delivered whenever called upon. Skilful, fearless, and explosive on the ball, Mofokeng was central to the Buccaneers' attacking play. With five goals this season, his impact in possession and the danger he poses when driving forward made him one of the most threatening midfielders in the league. Lucas Ribeiro Costa The 26-year old had a transformative impact for the reigning champions and emerged not just as a midfield presence but also as the league's top scorer, earning him the coveted Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot. Much of his influence was felt in the early stages of the campaign, where his goals helped fend off a fast-starting Pirates side. In scintillating form, the Brazilian midfielder consistently tormented defences, finishing the season with 16 goals and nine assists in 26 appearances. With those numbers, few would argue if the Midfielder of the Season honour ends up in his hands. Sinoxolo Kwayiba Despite Chippa United's challenges in maintaining a Top 8 position, Kwayiba shone as a bright spark in midfield, producing a standout season worthy of recognition. The 25-year-old, who is reportedly set for a move away from the Chilli Boys, brought versatility and an eye for goal to the table. He scored six goals and registered one assist in 25 appearances — numbers that underscore his consistent influence even as his team struggled at times. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 🏆@SekhukhuneFc's Keletso Makgalwa is the April #BetwayPrem Player of the Month — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) May 14, 2025 Keletso Makgalwa Arguably the most complete of the contenders, the Sekhukhune United midfielder had a widespread impact—both in orchestrating play from the middle and threatening the opposition's goal. The 28-year-old was a regular presence across 26 matches, tallying four goals and an impressive 11 assists. His pace, control, and attacking intent made life difficult for Betway Premiership defenders throughout the season. Makgalwa played a key role in driving Sekhukhune's pursuit of a CAF Confederation Cup spot—a campaign that ultimately saw the Limpopo side finish in a highly respectable fourth place.
