
Study Sheds Light on Origin of Australia's Odd Echidna
Australia's burrowing echidna evolved from a water-dwelling ancestor in an "extremely rare" biological event, scientists said Tuesday in a new study of the peculiar egg-laying mammals.
With powerful digging claws, protective spikes and highly sensitive beaks, echidnas are well suited to a life shuffling through the forest undergrowth, AFP said.
But a team of Australian and international scientists believe many of the echidna's unusual traits were first developed millions of years ago when its ancestors splashed through the water.
"We're talking about a semiaquatic mammal that gave up the water for a terrestrial existence," said paleontologist Suzanne Hand, from the University of New South Wales.
"While that would be an extremely rare event, we think that's what happened with echidnas."
Echidnas and another Australian oddity, the semi-aquatic platypus, are believed to have evolved from a common ancestor called Kryoryctes cadburyi that lived in Australia more than 100 million years ago.
Researchers studied the single known bone fragment left by this ancestor, which was discovered among a trove of fossils at Dinosaur Cove in southern Australia some 30 years ago.
Platypus bones were similar to this ancient ancestor, Hand said, with a thick and heavy structure that provided ballast for diving.
Echidnas, in comparison, had very thin bone walls that made it easier to walk on land, Hand said.
This indicated echidnas were descended from a water-dwelling ancestor but had evolved to live on land, the research found.
It was far more common for prehistoric mammals to go from land to water, Hand said, pointing towards seals, whales, dolphins and dugongs.
The researchers said these findings appeared to be supported by other echidna traits.
Echidnas have backward-facing hind feet that help them shift mounds of soil when burrowing.
These feet may have first developed as rudders helping the echidna's ancestor navigate fast-moving waterways, Hand said.
Echidnas also have a "diving reflex" when submerged in water, which tells their body to conserve oxygen helping them hold their breath for longer.
Echidnas and platypus are monotremes, a rare group of mammals that lay eggs instead of live young.
"We're hoping we'll discover other ancestral monotremes that will help unravel the early history of this most fascinating group of mammals," said study co-author Michael Archer.
The research was published in peer-reviewed journal PNAS.

Study Finds Planetary Waves Linked to Wild Summer Weather Have Tripled Since 1950
Climate change has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years, and that may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer heat waves, droughts, and floods, a new study says. In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to a study in Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Planetary waves are connected to 2021's deadly and unprecedented Pacific Northwest heat wave, the 2010 Russian heat wave and Pakistan flooding, and the 2003 killer European heat wave, the study said. 'If you're trying to visualize the planetary waves in the northern hemisphere, the easiest way to visualize them is on the weather map to look at the waviness in the jet stream as depicted on the weather map,' said study co-author Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist. Planetary waves flow across Earth all the time, but sometimes they get amplified, becoming stronger, and the jet stream gets wavier with bigger hills and valleys, Mann said. 'It's called quasi-resonant amplification or QRA. This essentially means the wave gets stuck for weeks on end, locked in place. As a result, some places get seemingly endless rain while others endure oppressive heat with no relief.' A classic pattern would be like a high pressure out west (in the US) and a low pressure back East, 'and in summer 2018 that's exactly what we had,' Mann said. 'We had that configuration locked in place for like a month. So they (in the West) got the heat, the drought, and the wildfires. We (in the East) got the excessive rainfall.' 'It's deep and it's persistent,' Mann said. 'You accumulate the rain for days on end or the ground is getting baked for days on end.' The study finds this is happening more often because of human-caused climate change, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels, specifically because the Arctic warms three to four times faster than the rest of the world. That means the temperature difference between the tropics and the Arctic is now much smaller than it used to be, and that weakens the jet streams and the waves, making them more likely to get locked in place, Mann said. 'This study shines a light on yet another way human activities are disrupting the climate system that will come back to bite us all with more unprecedented and destructive summer weather events,' said Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center who wasn't involved in the research. 'Wave resonance does appear to be one reason for worsening summer extremes. On top of general warming and increased evaporation, it piles on an intermittent fluctuation in the jet stream that keeps weather systems from moving eastward as they normally would, making persistent heat, drought, and heavy rains more likely,' Francis said. This is different than Francis' research on the jet stream and the polar vortex that induces winter extremes, said Mann. There's also a natural connection. After an El Niño–a natural warming of the central Pacific that alters weather patterns worldwide–the next summer tends to be prone to more of these amplified QRA waves that become locked in place, Mann said. And since the summer of 2024 featured an El Niño, this summer will likely be more prone to this type of stuck jet stream, according to Mann. While scientists have long predicted that as the world warms there will be more extremes, the increase has been much higher than what was expected, especially by computer model simulations, Mann and Francis said. 'That's because the models are not capturing this one vital mechanism,' Mann said. Unless society stops pumping more greenhouse gases in the air, we can expect multiple factors to worsen summer extremes, Francis said. Heat waves will last longer, grow larger, and get hotter. Worsening droughts will destroy more agriculture.

Easy vote turns Elon Musk's dreams for Starbase city in Texas into reality
Tech billionaire Elon Musk's dream of gaining city status for his SpaceX spaceport in the southern US state of Texas became a reality on Saturday, when voters overwhelmingly backed turning his Starbase into a new municipality. The ballot, which also named a senior SpaceX representative as its mayor with 100 percent of the early vote, was never really in doubt. Most of the 283 eligible voters were SpaceX employees at the site on Boca Chica Bay bordering Mexico, or had connections to the company, whose billionaire chief has long eyed a human mission to Mars. 'Starbase, Texas,' Musk wrote on his social media platform X, 'Is now a real city!' His post came after polls closed and unofficial results published by Cameron County showed an unambiguous 97.7 percent backing the project. Musk himself is registered to vote, Cameron County Election Coordinator Remi Garza told AFP, but the South African-born embattled 53-year-old had yet to cast his ballot when the early voting period closed on April 29. Official documents show that nearly 500 people live around the base in Cameron County, on land mostly owned by SpaceX or its employees. The change allows Starbase to control building and permitting and avoid other regulatory hurdles, while collecting taxes and writing local law. The vote came at a difficult time for Musk, who is expected to reduce his role as the unofficial head of US President Donald Trump's cost-cutting 'Department of Government Efficiency' to instead focus more on his troubled car company, Tesla. The early voting also confirmed as mayor Bobby Peden, who is vice president of testing and launches at SpaceX, according to LinkedIn. He was the only name on the ballot. The Texas base launched in 2019 and is a key testing site for the company's rocket launches. Not everyone had been upbeat about the prospect of a SpaceX town. Bekah Hinojosa, co-founder of the South Texas Environmental Justice Network, earlier voiced concern over the environmental impact, warning of more 'destruction.' 'They would attempt more illegal dumping, they would build up their dangerous rocket operations and cause more seismic activity, cause our homes to shake, and that they would destroy more of the wildlife habitat in the region,'she told AFP before election day. Environmental concerns It was Musk himself who proposed the name Starbase in a social media post during a visit to the facility four years ago. Then, last December, general manager of SpaceX Kathryn Lueders appealed to local authorities to grant the site city status. Lueders argued in her letter that SpaceX already maintained infrastructure there like roads, education services and medical care. She promised the creation of the new city would not undermine SpaceX efforts to mitigate the base's environmental impact. SpaceX did not respond to an AFP request for comment. The hub overlooks the Gulf of Mexico -- renamed the Gulf of America by Trump -- and there is controversy over access to Boca Chica Beach. A Texas House State Affairs committee rejected a bill this week by Republican lawmakers that would have given coastal cities with spaceports control over beach access. Hinojosa, the activist, said SpaceX has limited access to Boca Chica Beach for many years and told AFP she worried the vote could cut access entirely to a beach 'our families have been going to for generations.' The Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation of Texas, descendants of an Indigenous tribe in the area, has also complained. In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency and Texas authorities found that SpaceX was responsible for repeated spills and releasing pollutants into Texas waterways. In response to reports that its rockets had caused damage to wild bird nests, Musk quipped on social media: 'To make up for this heinous crime, I will refrain from having omelette for a week.'

In Show Stretched over 50 Years, Slovenian Director Shoots for Space
In an innovative show directed by Slovenian artist and space enthusiast Dragan Zivadinov, a crew of actors is putting on the same play once a decade over 50 years. And if they die before the half-century run of performances ends? They are replaced by satellite-like devices that the director says will eventually be launched into space. "If you ask me who will be the audience of these emancipated, auto-poetic devices -- it will be the Sun!" Zivadinov, 65, told AFP after the latest staging in the remote Slovenian town of Vitanje last month. The first performance in the series took place on April 20, 1995, in the capital Ljubljana; the second was in Star City, a town outside Moscow that has prepared generations of Soviet and Russian cosmonauts. And the last one will be in 2045. This time, 12 actors, most of them in their sixties, took part, wearing futuristic monochrome coveralls and dancing along a spaceship-like cross-shaped stage made of monitors. Two so-called "umbots" -- artistic satellite-like devices emitting sounds -- replaced actors who have died since 1995. 'Makes you think' Hundreds turned up to watch the play, "Love and Sovereignty", a tragedy set in the early 17th century by Croatian playwright Vladimir Stojsavljevic. It deals with power and art and features English playwright William Shakespeare as a character. "It is an interesting experience, makes you think," Eneja Stemberger, who studies acting in Ljubljana, told AFP after watching the packed show. Tickets offered for free online quickly ran out, but the organizers allowed even those who came without tickets to watch the show, standing or sitting on the floor. German art consultant Darius Bork told AFP that he had already seen the play 10 years ago, describing Zivadinov's work as "absolutely fantastic". Zivadinov became internationally recognized in the 1980s as one of the founders of Slovenia's avant-garde movement Neue Slowenische Kunst (New Slovenian Art), which criticized totalitarian regimes in then-Communist Yugoslavia. At the end of the century, Zivadinov turned to develop "post-gravity art". He also helped set up a space research center in Vitanje, named after the early space travel theorist Herman Potocnik, who went by the pseudonym of Noordung and whose work inspired Stanley Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey". The Center Noordung hosted this year's and the 2015 performance. The "Noordung: 1995-2025-2045" project's final performance will feature only "umbots" and so be "liberated from human influence", Zivadinov said. At the end of the project, the "umbots" -- containing digitalized information, including the actors' DNA -- will be propelled into space to "culturize" it, he added, without detailing how he would do that. "They will all be launched simultaneously, each one into a different direction, deep into space," he said.
