UFC star makes confident Paddy Pimblett vs Ilia Topuria admission
Pimblett and Topuria have been on a collision course ever since they clashed at the fighter hotel during UFC London in 2022, and the fight could soon be on the horizon
UFC welterweight sensation Ian Machado Garry has predicted a fight between Ilia Topuria and Paddy Pimblett would go down as one of the "biggest fights" ever.
The bad blood between 'The Baddy' and Topuria dates back to an infamous altercation three years ago during a UFC London event. After a heated exchange in the fighter hotel, Pimblett threw a bottle of hand sanitiser at Topuria, sparking chaotic scenes.
The clash in London seemed to ignite the bitter feud, and there have been teases about them facing off in the octagon despite previously competing in different divisions. However, that all changed earlier this year when Topuria vacated his featherweight title in favour of a move up to 155lbs.
'El Matador' has jumped straight into a title fight against Charles Oliveira for the newly vacated 155lb championship belt at next month's UFC 317, following Islam Makhachev's decision to step up to welterweight. Providing Topuria comes away with the win and unscathed, it could set up eagerly anticipated clash with the Liverpudlian.
'The Baddy' recently secured the most significant victory of his career against Michael Chandler, and despite many believing the Brit needs another win before competing for the title, he could be thrust into a title bout with Topuria due to their mutual animosity. While 'El Matador' is set to fight Oliveira, a close friend of Machado Garry, the Irishman is still keen to see a showdown between Topuria and Pimblett.
In an interview with Covers.com, he said: "Paddy's been phenomenal. You can't give nothing but praise to what he's done and how he's done it. He's gone out there. He's backed up everything he said. He's beaten and is beating everyone that's been put in front of him and he's looked great and has that popularity inside and outside the Octagon, he's doing what he needs to do, and he's doing a very good job at it. Paddy and Ilia is a massive, massive fight if that happens down the line. It's going to be so big, so big. I reckon that's a stadium [fight]. That'll be one of the biggest fights we've ever seen."
Pimblett is indeed keen on facing Topuria in Abu Dhabi in October, but he admits that his likely opponent will be Justin Gaethje. "I'm hoping to fight in Abu Dhabi in October. I think that's when I'm going to be back in the cage," Pimblett told BBC Sport.
"I was thinking Ilia might call me out if he wins [against Oliveira]. I'd love to beat him if he gets the belt. I'd love to fight him anyway but he's booked, so I think it's more than likely Justin Gaethje." The Brit was asked about his interest in dangerous contender Arman Tsarukyan - to which he replied: "No one [cares] about Arman Tsarukyan and people actually want to watch Gaethje fight. People know it'll be an exciting fight, me versus Gaethje," said Pimblett. "Tsarukyan, he's just an absolute tool, and then it's me and Gaethje. One win away and I'll be fighting for the belt. Yeah, that's always been the aim. It's the only aim that we have."

And he alluded to that success in his post with the Celtic manager. McGregor wrote on twitter: "LEGENDARY DOUBLE CHAMP LINK UP! "NEXT YEAR, TREBLE! "God is great! "Congrats to the Rodgers family on the new addition to their family." Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will clash in September in one of the biggest fights in boxing history - and there could be more money on offer for one man Either Canelo Alvarez or Terence Crawford will land a KO bonus if they can bring their mega-fight to an early finish. Alvarez and Crawford will clash in Las Vegas on September 14 in one of the biggest fights in boxing history. Crawford is stepping up two weights to super-middleweight to take on the division's undisputed ruler. And while both men will cash a multi-million-dollar purse, there will also be an added incentive. The fight will be promoted by UFC CEO Dana White whose promotion has long offered bonus for the fight and fighters of the night. And Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh is determined to weed out so-called 'boring' fights and when asked how he plans to do that, he said: "We will not have them, that is the first thing. The second, for this fight and the next one, we will have a KO bonus." READ MORE: Boxing fans make worrying comparison between Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson Alvarez and Crawford came face to face in Riyadh on Friday night in the first of three press conferences ahead of their autumn showdown. I promise you." The September showdown will also have a record-breaking £140,000 Ring Magazine belt on the line. And Alvarez added: "He's a great fighter, but he's not Canelo. They only focus on my power, but I have more than that. This fight i going to be one of my best fights in my history."

Brendan Rodgers tells Rangers boss Russell Martin that Celtic welcome the chase as 2 'big deals' can bury rivals
The Hoops boss is keepings tabs on the rest of the Premiership but he insisted his side set their own standards Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic welcome the chase as the Hoops boss gears up to take on new-look Rangers under Russell Martin. The Irishman is set to ramp up preparations for the new term with several transfer targets in the pipeline. Kieran Tierney is already on board, Callum Osmand is set to land from Fulham and Swedish ace Benjamin Nygren is expected to be rubber stamped early next week. Rodgers is also trailing Royal Antwerp wide man Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Japanese defender Hayato Inamura – with interest in several others – as he looks to tool up for the coming campaign. The Hoops gaffer insisted Celtic set their own standards – and he's thrilled at the prospect of a tougher challenge from Rangers and the rest of the Premiership. Rodgers told Sky Sports: 'We create our own benchmark and our own levels and we've been doing that consistently now, but there's no doubt competition makes you better in whatever sport it is or whatever pursuit of anything that you're trying to achieve. 'If you have competition, that really narrows in the focus. 'We always have to keep an eye on our rivals in terms of what they do and players that they might bring in and systems they play and tactics they use and managers. 'But competition is always healthy for you and for me it's what really drives me up here. 'Ultimately for me it's about making Celtic the best that we possibly can be and using all the resources that I possibly can to help make us the best that we can and keep delivering the football that the supporters want.' Celtic's summer shopping is set to gather pace but Hoops legend Chris Sutton has urged his former clubs to get a shift on. The champions will unfurl the league flag at home to St Mirren on Sunday, August 3 – abut face a Champions League play-off three weeks later and just days before the first Old Firm showdown of the season. Record Sport columnist Sutton – who has urged Celts not to sell Nicolas Kuhn in this window – said: "I'm a little bit concerned Celtic don't have more players in. When a team is as strong as they have been, it's important they add to the squad and freshen things up," "I'm sure there will be a couple more moves in the pipeline and players brought in. "I'd always like to see them strengthen early. Then you can bed players in, there's Champions League qualifiers for Rangers and Celtic which have such an impact on their seasons financially. "As much as Celtic have been dominant, and won a double last season, the pressure is on right from the off. "I think Kieran Tierney coming back is massive. He's gone back to Celtic, arguably sort of in his peak, albeit didn't play enough football at Arsenal. "Replacing him Greg Taylor looks like to be a pretty big deal because he was an outstanding player for Celtic. "Keeping hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers is a big deal for Celtic as well. "It's so important to strengthen when you're on top and go again and Celtic should be trying to absolutely bury Rangers in the transfer market this season.'
