Zero Shadow Day observed across schools

Scores of school students observed Zero Shadow Day (ZSD) at their campuses under the auspices of the Directorate of School Education and the Pondicherry Science Forum.
According to a press note from the Forum, the phenomeon was observable in the city between 10 a.m and 12.30 p.m. with the aid of instruments installed across schools.
The ZSD marks the bi-annual phenomena when the sun's declination perfectly corresponds to the latitude of a location on earth. When the sun is at is zenith, at 12.10 p.m., it creates a zero shadow effect.
This year, the day was observed across 218 urban/rural schools and teachers were specially trained to explain the phenomenon to students as part of an initiative of the Samagra Shiksha programme of the Education Department.
Representatives of the Forum, including A. Hemavathi, R. Madivanan and S. Muruguvel and school officials coordinated the programme.

Visakhapatnam: Marking successful completion of a year of piloting Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum for Classes VII, VIII and IX across 100 government secondary schools, the government of Andhra Pradesh celebrated State-level showcasing of student innovation and teacher leadership. The pilot programme, implemented across Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, Andhra Pradesh Model School, government high schools in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, introduced learners to foundational AI concepts, future skills and career education. Celebrating the achievement, a four-day-long 'Hack to the Future Andhra 2025' was organised at GITAM, bringing students, teachers and education leaders to celebrate future-ready learning by the government of AP in partnership with Quest Alliance, Samagra Shiksha (SSA AP) and Leadership for Equity. It also equipped teachers with tools and training to facilitate technology-integrated learning. G Sridevi, a Telugu educator teaching in KGBV Saravakota, said, 'As a Telugu teacher with little knowledge in technology, I relied on poems and stories to teach. Gradually, I began using small apps and IFP panels to engage my students.' The State programme director, Samagra Shiksha, Andhra Pradesh B Srinivasa Rao, said, 'This initiative is not just about introducing students to AI but also about bringing alive the State's ambitious vision of 'Swarna Andhra 2047' where AP emerges as an AI Hub for the country.' The event featured a hackathon bootcamp, a prototype showcase, and a teacher recognition ceremony. In all 39 students, working in teams of three, developed AI-powered prototypes to solve local problems, with guidance from 13 trained teachers. These projects addressed issues ranging from waste management to access to public services, and were presented to an expert panel comprising professors, funders, educationists and state officials.

E-libraries soon for government school students in Haryana

Gurgaon: In a major push towards digital learning, govt schools across Haryana will soon be equipped with e-libraries under the Samagra Shiksha initiative. As part of the state govt's efforts to modernise public education, the first phase of the project will roll out in urban areas, beginning with eight Government Model Sanskriti Schools (GMS) and 10 PM SHRI Schools in the city. The initiative aims to enhance the learning experience of the students and nurture their creativity. According to the education department, the state has already addressed much of the infrastructure needs of its govt schools. With new curriculum frameworks being developed under the National Education Policy (NEP), the digital libraries are expected to complement ongoing academic reforms. The government also plans to establish a new Model Sanskriti School within every 10-kilometre radius to ensure wider access to quality education. With this initiative, students will have easy access to physical books at the start of each academic session. Meanwhile, changes to the transfer policy for teachers posted in Government Model Sanskriti and PM SHRI Schools are underway. A delegation led by Haryana School Lecturers Association (HASLA) state president Satpal Sindhu recently met with director of secondary education, Jitendra Dahiya, to raise concerns and suggest amendments to the 2025 transfer policy. At the meeting, it was discussed that the screening test participation will be optional, not mandatory, for teachers, and the deadline for screening test registration is expected to be extended.
