JDT legends Safiq Rahim and Farizal Marlias bid farewell
JOHOR Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) stalwarts Safiq Rahim and Farizal Marlias have bid farewell to the club after years of dedication to the Southern Tigers.
The club announced the duo's departure via a tribute on its official Facebook page, recognising their years of commitment, leadership, and achievements that helped shape JDT into a dominant force in Malaysian and regional football.
Safiq, 37, joined JDT in 2013 and has been instrumental in the team's success, including captaining the side to the historic 2015 AFC Cup victory, the first time an East Asian club clinched the prestigious continental title.
Over the course of 270 appearances, the attacking midfielder netted 59 goals and provided 68 assists, helping the club secure an impressive list of honours - nine Malaysia Super League titles, seven Charity Shields, four Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups, and one AFC Cup.
Farizal, 38, who donned the JDT jersey in 2015, on the other hand, established himself as one of the country's finest goalkeepers, keeping 102 clean sheets in 222 appearances.
His tenure saw him win 10 league titles, nine Charity Shields, five Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups and the historic AFC Cup in 2015.
The Johor-born duo are widely regarded as legends, not only for their on-field success but also for their leadership and influence within the club.
Yesterday, JDT confirmed the release of 11 players ahead of the 2025–2026 M-League season through a post on social media.
Among those released were goalkeepers Farizal Marlias and Izham Tarmizi, as well as midfield legend Safiq Rahim.
The Southern Tigers also parted ways with seven foreign players, Jordi Amat, Jese Rodriguez, Murilo Henrique, Jonathan Viera, Alvaro Gonzalez, Roque Mesa, and Anselmo de Moraes, as the club looks to refresh its squad for the upcoming campaign.
The eleventh departure is Ramadhan Saifullah, who has completed a permanent transfer to Kuching City FC, officially bringing his journey with the Southern Tigers to a close.

Rachel couldn't take the heat in Kuching

The Malaysian went down 11-4, 12-10, 11-4, 11-0 to Hong Kong's world No. 29 Ho Tze Lok in the women's final today at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching. The setback came as a surprise as the 29-year-old Rachel had not dropped a set in the tournament until the semi-finals on Friday where she beat compatriot Aifa Azman 11-9, 11-2, 8-11, 9-11, 12-10. Rachel, who finished runner-up in the 2021 edition in Pakistan, said the hot weather was a factor for her defeat, and Tze Lok played well. "A bit disappointed in the final today, I didn't really adapt to the court, it was really hot and I struggled. She played really well today, putting me under a lot of pressure," said Rachel. "I think I made too many errors, that was the main thing. Every time she put me under pressure, I sort of went for it, maybe I should have stayed calm. "I struggled with the weather, it was really hot... I couldn't end the rallies in the way I usually do," said Rachel whose next event will be the National Championship in Kuala Lumpur in August. In the men's final, second seed Lau Tsz Kwan completed a double for Hong Kong after stunning Abdulla Al Tamini of Qatar 14-12 13-11 11-9.

Indonesia outplay Malaysia for Billie Jean King Cup promotion
KUALA LUMPUR: Promotion once again eluded Malaysia but the national women's tennis squad can still be proud to replicate their top-four finish from last season in the Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Asia-Oceania Group II competition this year. Malaysia lost 2-0 in their promotional playoff against Indonesia at the National Tennis centre here today (June 21). Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman succumbed to a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of Anjali Kirana Junarto in the opening singles. Joleen Saw had Malaysian fans on the edge of their seats as she pushed Mishka Sinclaire Goenardi hard before going down 6-7 (8), 6-1, 6-4. Mongolia will join Indonesia in the Group I competition next year as they defeated Philippines 2-0 in the other promotional playoff. Malaysia had finished second behind Mongolia in group A earlier this week to qualify for the promotional playoff, which was essentially the semi-finals. A total of 10 teams competed in Group II this season. Joleen, who was reduced to tears after losing her match against Indonesia, was nevertheless proud of the team's efforts this year. "I tried my best but at the end of the day she (Mishka) made the better shots and played really well," said a visibly dejected Joleen. "The atmosphere was incredible today and I really appreciate the support we got from our home crowd. "Unfortunately we could not get the result we wanted. It is a bit disappointing, there was not much I could do. "Overall, I think we had a better chance (at promotion) than last year and our performances were quite okay.
