Martindale welcomes 'newest version' of artificial surface
David Martindale says criticism of Livingston's artificial surface has been "unwarranted" but is looking forward to welcoming opponents to a new improved one in the coming season. The West Lothian club's pitch is being upgraded this summer and the Livingston manager points out that it is the "newest version of our surface and Falkirk's", which has received some praise."I know everybody talks about it not being a good surface, but that probably comes from watching and not playing on it," he said of Livingston's pitch.Martindale has lost captain utility man Jamie Brandon to Kilmarnock but brought in four new players - winger Graham Carey from St Johnstone, defender Shane Blaney from Motherwell, plus forwards Connor McLennan and Zak Rudden from Ayr United and Queen's Park respectively.Meanwhile, striker Stevie May has signed permanently after last season's loan from St Johnstone."I thought it was important to get as much Premiership experience in as we can," Martindale told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "They are all boys who have played in the Premiership and I'm giving some of them the opportunity to continue to do that but also giving some of them the chance to get back to the Premiership."Martindale admits his side will be slightly "undercooked" when the season starts with the League Cup group sections because they will be "a week to 10 days" later in starting pre-season because of playing in the Premiership Play-off final. "I've been involved in some big games with Livingston previously, but that tops the lot for me," he said of the victory over Ross County."In the manner of going behind, how we won the game, it was just a great way to end the season. I think it was a really good game of football for the neutral, but I think it was really good for Scottish football in terms of the play-offs - it is one of the formats that work."

The Jambos have been on a busy recruitment drive ahead of their Premier Sports Cup fixtures beginning in July. They now know the path they must walk if they are to reclaim the third spot they won in 2024, which was won by Hibs in the 24/25 campaign after a strong first term under David Gray. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad His side have Europa League qualification clashes against FC Midtjylland to come in July, before attentions then turn to a busy start to the domestic action. One of the first fixtures Hearts and Hibs fans will look for on the calendar is the Edinburgh derby so what are the details when it comes to derby day in the capital this coming season? Look no further than our guide. When are the Edinburgh derbies during Premiership season 25/26? The first Edinburgh derby of the season takes place at Tynecastle on October 4th. The second is December 27th at Easter Road and the final one pre split is February 11th at Tynecastle. Ties will be subject to change based on possible TV scheduling, How could the amount of Edinburgh derby matches double? Last season, there were only three clashes in the league between Hearts and Hibs due to the former being in the bottom six, and roles reversed in term 23/24. It doesn't happen very often but there is a scenario where a total of six derbies could play out. An additional Premiership battle could be added if both sides finish in the top or bottom six together, while they could also meet in the Premier Sports Cup, with Hibs entering at the round of 16. A Scottish Cup meeting could also beckon depending on the draw. Who ruled the Edinburgh derby last season? It was Hibs who had the bragging rights in the 24/25 season. Both teams were toiling near the foot of the table when they first drew in October but Hibs then won the festive edition of the fixture at Tynecastle. Their most recent clash was a 2-1 Hibs win at Easter Road thanks to a Jack Iredale goal that eventually won goal of the season for his looping long range strike over Craig Gordon. You could see by everyone's reaction that they didn't really expect it from me, so that's why it holds more weight. I've been trying to replicate it in training and none of them have come off yet." And on the prospect of securing third spot this season, the defender added: "I'm confident in the team. Playing in Europe is any player's dream. It's definitely something we want to achieve in the dressing room."

New Rangers head coach Russell Martin will begin his domestic campaign with a trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell. Martin's first William Hill Premiership match in charge will see him go head to head with former Norwich team-mate Jens Berthel Askou, who was recently installed as Motherwell manager. The fixture will kick off at 5.30pm on Saturday, 2 August and will mark the weekend of the 130th anniversary of the first game at Fir Park. There is only one Premiership game taking place at 3pm on the Saturday, which sees Stuart Kettlewell start his Kilmarnock reign with the visit of newly-promoted Livingston. Falkirk end their 15-year absence from the top flight with a home game against Dundee United the following afternoon in one of four matches to be screened live by Sky Sports over the opening fixture card. Former Hearts captain Steven Pressley begins his first league campaign as Dundee head coach at home to Hibernian on the Sunday, following the Leith club's Europa League tie with Midtjylland. Champions Celtic will unfurl the league flag later that day ahead of hosting St Mirren in a 4.30pm kick-off. Hearts and Aberdeen fans will need to wait until 8pm on the Monday to see their teams start the season at Tynecastle as new head coach Derek McInnes begins his Premiership campaign at home against one of his former clubs. Martin's first league game at Ibrox will kick off at 5.30pm on 9 August, with Dundee the visitors in a game to be shown live by Premier Sports. Celtic have the chance to atone for their Scottish Gas Scottish Cup final defeat by Aberdeen when they travel to Pittodrie the following day for a 12.30pm kick-off. There are no league games in the third weekend of August with the second round of the Premier Sports Cup taking place. Rangers head coach Martin will experience his first derby in charge on Sunday, 31 August, when Celtic visit Ibrox for a noon showdown. The festive schedule is slightly less hectic than usual with only one midweek slot rather than the usual two. Six matches are scheduled for Saturday, December 27, including an Edinburgh derby at Easter Road, which has been earmarked for live television coverage at 12.30pm. There is a full fixture card three days later with Celtic travelling to Fir Park before hosting Rangers in a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, January 3. All teams - including a Dundee derby at Tannadice - play that afternoon. There are six midweek fixture dates in total including two in succession in early February, either side of the Scottish Cup fifth round. The final games before the split are pencilled in for April 11, when St Mirren will be aiming to seal a fourth consecutive top-six finish when they travel to Celtic Park. As in recent seasons, there is a full midweek card in the final week of the season, which ends on May 17-18. The SPFL season in general will kick off on Friday, 1 August when Arbroath return to the Championship with a home game against Ayr United. PA
