Dundee and Angus Scots Scriever announced

The post follows successful appointments in previous years with Alison Miller as Orcadian Scriever in 21/22, Shane Strachan as Doric Scriever in 22/23, and Susi Briggs as Dumfries and Galloway Scriever in 23/24. This year, the Library specifically sought applicants working in Dundee and Angus.
Dyson is a writer and performer from Dundee. She is passionate about the Scots language, and has hosted the Scots Language Awards for the last two years.
Winner of the Scottish Book Trust's 'New writers 2025' award for Spoken Word, Dyson recently adapted an NHS book for new parents into Dundonian Scots. She is passionate about women's stories, working-class stories and representation in the arts.

She said: 'I am honoured and absolutely delighted to receive this prestigious residency, and follow in the footsteps of folk I greatly admire. Promoting and encouraging Scots means so much to me, so to have the opportunity to continue to do this in a supported environment is so exciting. When I was starting out as a playwright, connecting to the language I was brought up speaking helped me find my voice as an artist. And I would love to help others do the same. I cannot wait to get started on creating work across theatre, poetry and story and connecting with communities in my hometown over the importance of language and how it can empower us to find our voices.'
Dyson co-runs the award-winning theatre duo, Elfie Picket Theatre, alongside her partner, and they focus on new writing. Her recent work includes Goodbye Dreamland Bowlarama and Pushin' Thirty at A Play, A Pie and A Pint, Dolly Parton Saved My Life (a community tour), and the ART Award winning one-woman show, Ane City, which has performed in Prague, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Dundee Rep Theatre. She also runs the monthly poetry night, BLETHER, at Sweet Venues in Dundee.
Alan Bett, Head of Literature and Publishing at Creative Scotland, said: "As the new Scots Scriever for Dundee and Angus, Taylor Dyson will be stepping into the footsteps of writers who have previously championed Orkney, Aberdeenshire, and Dumfries and Galloway. As a playwright and poet, she will not only have the time and space to develop her own creative work in Dundonian Scots but will have a platform to promote the Scots language across the region and further afield.'
Taylor Dyson has been appointed as the Dundee and Angus Scots Scriever, where she will take up a year-long residency with the National Library of Scotland. (Image: National Library of Scotland)
As Dundee and Angus Scriever, Dyson will produce original written work in Scots. The residency allows time for the exploration of the rich and extensive Scots language collections held at the National Library. Dyson will contribute to raising the profile, understanding and appreciation of the Scots language in general.
Martha Burns Findlay, Head of Public Programmes at the National Library of Scotland, said: "This year we're celebrating 100 years of the National Library of Scotland. As the proud guardians of Scotland's cultural heritage, we not only preserve a historic record of the Scots language, but we also champion the vitality of Scots today. Taylor embodies the dynamism and vibrancy of Dundee and Angus' rich linguistic culture, and we're looking forward to working with her as our new Scots Scriever."
Dyson's latest work, Goodbye Dreamland Bowlarama, is showing at the Oran Mor, Glasgow, from Monday May 12 to Saturday May 17. The play is a fish-out-of-water comedy, with original songs, about a lonely young woman who moves to Dundee in search of community.
The 12-month post is funded by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland. Dyson will begin her residency in June 2025.

Legendary BBC presenter quietly bows out after almost 50 years of TV hosting

BBC and ITV sports presenting icon Steve Ryder gave his last broadcast on Sunday as he presented the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park for ITV4 Sports presenter Steve Ryder has announced his retirement from broadcasting after an impressive 48-year career. The 75-year-old covered major sporting fixtures for both the BBC and ITV over the course of his time on the air. On Sunday, the star was broadcasting from the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire when he revealed he would be hanging up his microphone. He was covering the event for ITV4 when he announced the news of his departure from the screen. ‌ A montage of clips was then shared showing drivers including Lando Norris, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button and David Coulthard all bidding farewell to the broadcaster. Over the years, he has hosted Sportsnight and Sports Personality of the Year, as well as the BBC's coverage of every Olympic Games between 1988 and 2004. ‌ He departed the BBC in 2005 and joined ITV where he presented coverage of Formula One, as well as the football and rugby World Cups. His final appearance proved to be a muted exit, but he has previously explained why he decided the time had come to quit. He told the Daily Mail: "The biggest emotion as you get into the last two minutes of something like that is, 'For God's sake, don't c**k it up.' "Because you'd be thinking about that for the next 20 years. I've probably outstayed my welcome. I've been hugely lucky with the places that the career has taken me. But it's close to 50 years now, so the cracks are showing." Steve famously used to present Match of the Day and was left miffed when he was replaced by Gary Lineker as the main host - admitting he had cut the former footballer out of his life. The beef began when Gary said in 2015 that he though the R&A as 'pompous' and accused them of feeling like 'superior beings'. This, in turn, provoked a furious reaction from Steve. ‌ He told the Golf Paper: "I hold Gary Lineker in the highest regard as a football presenter, but his reflections on his experiences as a golf presenter need a huge reality check. For four years, the R&A and most other observers knew that Gary was the wrong man in the wrong job. Hazel Irvine has just delivered once again at the Open presentation skills of the highest quality. Not many people can do that and Gary certainly came up short. "Roger Mosey, the head of sport, knew Gary was a golf fanatic and was further encouraged by Gary apparently volunteering for the Masters vacancy within a few minutes of my exit from Television Centre. ‌ "But if Mosey thought long and hard before offering Gary the golf job, it's even more baffling. Match of the Day is scripted and rehearsed. Golf presentation, especially at Augusta, is seat of the pants, unpredictable and demanding." Away from sport, Steve also won praise for being open about a battle against prostate cancer after he was diagnosed with the disease in October 2023. He underwent emergency surgery which stopped the cancer from spreading. He previously told BBC Breakfast: "They took one look and said, 'We're going to operate in two weeks'. "No messing around. We did Brands Hatch for ITV on the Sunday and I had the operation on the Thursday. So it slotted into the schedule quite nicely!"

Next offering Oasis inspired tees from £24 ahead of iconic band's reunion tour

The high street retailer is helping get devoted Oasis fans reunion tour ready ahead of next month. Oasis are officially back in the spotlight, delighting long term fans. With a highly anticipated reunion tour slated for next month, many will be counting down the days. Brothers, and co-founders of the beloved band, Liam and Noel Gallagher dropped the bombshell last summer that they would once again be joining the stage together for the Oasis Live '25 Tour that kicks off on July 4. With just over two weeks to go until the big day, those who were lucky enough to get tickets will need to start planning their outfit, and Next is offering a wide range of tees that play right into the returning '90s fashion trend. There's a wide range of styles that have been inspired by the iconic Britpop band, with this White/Black 90s Graphic Official License Oasis Band Relaxed Fit T-Shirt, £28, being one for women who are attending one of the gigs. Available in sizes XS to XL, this basic tee has been crafted from a pure cotton material and features a simple crew neckline. The simple design, that features the Oasis logo branded across the front, is ideal for pairing with vintage denims and even a bucket hat. Those who are maybe looking for something a touch more out there, the Oasis License Colour Block Graphic T-Shirt offers a striking yellow and brown colourway that will be sure to attract attention at summer festivals. Costing £28, has a little bit more stock available, as it has been designed in both regular and petite lengthways, with sizes ranging from a UK six to 26. Also made from a breathable pure cotton material, this particular tee inspired by the band boasts raglan sleeves, a simple crew neckline and a graphic print of the band's beloved 'Definitely, Maybe' album. Of course, it's not just merch for women, as Next is also stocking this Oasis Graphic Band 100 per cent Cotton T-Shirt, also featuring a graphic print of the band's debut album, for a budget-friendly £24. Unlike the previous option for women, this tee is available in a white colourway, with the graphic print being outlined in a vibrant green colourway. Available in sizes S to 3XL, it's another choice for fans looking to get tour ready. With three tour dates taking place at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, something with longer sleeves might be better suited, which is why we think this £26 version might be a fast seller among Scots fans. Available in sizes XS to 2XL, this tee offers the same style as the previous ones before it, just with longer sleeves. Offering a small Oasis logo on the front, the back is adorned with a graphic print of the band's third studio album 'Be Here Now.' The good thing about many of these vintage-inspired tees? They can be paired with virtually anything. Not just trusty denims like we mentioned earlier, but also cargo pants and maybe a classic parka to really recreate that 90s vibe associated with the band. Fashion deal of the week Calling all fashion fans, as we have found the dress to compliment a golden, sun-kissed tan this summer. It's Roman's White Lace Bodice Shirred Midi Dress, and it looks perfect for any tropical getaways or beach holidays. Costing £38, it boasts a strap-style design, with a chic crochet overlay bodice and a flowing midi-length skirt. It's finished with a simple round neckline that can be easily layered with statement necklaces for those days it is being worn to fancier events, or for going out to dinner. While the white colourway is ideal for highlighting a summer tan, it is worth noting that shoppers can also purchase the midi frock in both pink and black, with sizes all of them being available in sizes 10 to 20. The strappy maxi dress has been the subject of glowing praise, as it has garnered a stellar five star rating from shoppers who say it "looks lovely with a suntan" and is "stunning" to wear. One delighted shopper said: "It's very flattering and looks lovely with a suntan." Get holiday ready by purchasing Roman's White Lace Bodice Shirred Midi Dress for £38 now. While many of us who grew up singing 'Champagne Supernova' and 'Wonderwall' may be all grown up, there may be a few little ones among us who are also becoming fans, with Next offering a selection of tops for them as well. From bucket hats and hoodies to branded graphic printed tees, the high street firm has something for new fans aged from eight months up until 16-years old, with prices ranging from £11 to £36.
