KUCHING (May 20): The Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) alignment for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) at Jalan Wan Alwi will be entirely elevated, said Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.
The Deputy Minister of Transport revealed that the section will include two elevated ART stations.
'One will be located in front of Vivacity Megamall and the other near Kuching Lodge School,' he said during the question-and-answer session at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
He was responding to See Chee How's (Independent-Batu Lintang) question on the progress of Phase 1 of the KUTS project involving the ART.
'The operations of KUTS Phase 1 will be carried out in stages, with the first section under the Blue Line from Rembus to Riveria, now anticipated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026,' he said.
He said work progress on the KUTS Phase 1 Project now stands at 29.89 per cent compared to the planned 33.86 per cent.
According to Dr Jerip, the variance of -3.97 per cent is due to construction delays.
He added ART operations will be carried out in stages, with full operations expected to commence in 2028.
On the Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system planned for the Batu Lintang area, Dr Jerip said there will be one TSP junction in Batu Lintang, located at the Jalan Bampfylde-Jalan Batu Lintang traffic light junction, near Kuching Water Board.
He said there will also be a station at SM12, Batu Lintang, which is in front of Public Works Department Kuching Divisional Office, with an elevated design.

Insurance agent and retiree lose RM2.35mil to online scams

GEORGE TOWN: Two people, including an elderly man, suffered losses totalling RM2.35mil after falling victim to online investment scams in separate incidents in Penang. State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in the first case, the Commercial Crime Investigation division of the Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters received a complaint from a 57-year-old local man on Saturday after he lost almost RM1.5mil. 'According to the insurance agent, he saw a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December. 'The victim then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp. 'The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns. 'The victim downloaded the stock investment application and on Dec 30, made the first transfer of RM9,999. He earned a profit of RM18,400,' Comm Hamzah said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the victim's confidence grew in the investment and he subsequently made 35 fund transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies totalling RM1,495,176. Comm Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits from the investment app and was even asked to make an additional payment. In the second case, he said a 73-year-old retired accountant at a factory filed a police report at the George Town district police headquarters on Saturday after falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. 'According to the victim, he saw an advertisement on cryptocurrency investment that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March. 'The elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting a female suspect via WhatsApp,' he said. Comm Hamzah said the victim downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits. He added that investigations were being carried out to trace the fraud syndicate. Both cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Anwar urges Malaysians to embrace diversity as strength in face of global uncertainties at Sarawak's Gawai Dayak celebration

KUCHING, June 23 — Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event. Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the Asean chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders. He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. 'So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States,' he said. Meanwhile, Anwar also announced that he will meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto this Friday to discuss a proposal for Sarawak to be positioned as a hub for the Asean Power Grid (APG). He said Sarawak, with its strengths in hydroelectric, gas and hydrogen energy, has the potential to spearhead the APG, not only by linking to Sabah and Indonesia's Kalimantan, but also extending to the southern Philippines. — Bernama

Anwar urges restraint after US attack on Iran's nuclear sites

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the US's involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict is only worsening the situation. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has raised concerns over the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel after US forces struck three of the republic's nuclear sites. Anwar stressed that for genuine resolution, pressure must be placed on Israel to stop its provocative and violent actions against other nations. 'When they launch attacks and kill the people of Iran, there will inevitably be retaliation. Our position is one of fairness. 'In Gaza, the killings continue and it includes women and children. Now Israel is attacking Iran, which has decided to fight back. The involvement of outside powers, including the US, is only worsening the situation,' he told reporters after an event in Kuching today. Anwar, who also serves as finance minister, warned that a closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have dire consequences on the global economy. 'To me, what matters most are human lives and justice. 'The question is, if Iran is not allowed to respond, why allow Israel to (continue) acting in such a manner?' he said. Earlier today, AFP reported US president Donald Trump as saying that 'Tehran's nuclear programme had been obliterated' after US forces struck three Iranian nuclear sites – Natanz, Isfahan and Fordow – in a 'very successful attack'. After days of deliberation and long before his self-imposed two-week deadline, Trump's decision to join Israel's military campaign against Iran represents a major escalation of the conflict. In a speech that lasted just over three minutes, Trump said Iran's future held 'either peace or tragedy', and that there were many other targets that could be hit by the US military. Yemen's Houthis had said they will target US vessels and battleships in the Red Sea if the Trump administration gets involved and continued to support the Israeli attack on Iran, according to a statement published on a Houthi spokesman's official Telegram account. Shell Plc CEO Wael Sawan and Petronas group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz have in the past week warned of rude shocks to global trade and oil prices following the escalating conflict around the Strait of Hormuz, a major transit route. In a separate statement, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin said Perikatan Nasional strongly condemned the acts of aggression carried out by both Israel and the US against Iran. The Malaysian government, he said, must take a firmer and more resolute stance by calling for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to halt the actions of Israel and the US. 'Malaysia must also urgently engage with like-minded nations in a concerted and principled effort to address this crisis in a just, fair, and rules-based manner.'
