Northcliff High MMA prodigy strikes gold and hearts
From the gym mats of his family's grappling academy, to the international stage, Caleb Swart's journey is a story of will.
The Northcliff High School student recently seized the spotlight by winning a gold medal in the youth A welterweight 77.1kg division at the prestigious International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Africa Championships in Angola this past May.

But for Caleb, this victory is far more than a medal; it's a milestone on a path he has been walking steadily since childhood.
Guided by his father and coach, Wiekus Swart, Caleb's training regime is intense and disciplined, spanning five to six hours most days of the week, and blending strength, fitness, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai.
'We spar daily, grapple, and drill a variety of MMA techniques,' Caleb shared. Yet amidst the grind, there's a heartfelt dedication. 'This gold medal confirms that all the hard work and dedication I've put in is paying off. It motivates me to focus even more on the world championships in Abu Dhabi in July.'

MMA has been a cornerstone of Caleb's life since he was five years old. Growing up immersed in a family environment where Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA were part of everyday life, he embraced the sport, not just as a competitor, but as a source of confidence and life lessons. 'MMA has taught me that discipline and focus truly pay off. In the cage, there's very little luck. What you put in is what you get out.'
His love for the sport was first sparked when he watched his father referee EFC matches on TV, and later, through the exhilaration of attending events, meeting fighters, and even assisting backstage. 'I've always been incredibly physical and love activities where I can express that energy. MMA felt like the perfect fit.'
Now, with the world championships and beyond in his sights, he is forging a path of greatness, dominating on the mat.

A number of senior players are being rested for the two-Test tour of Zimbabwe. The World Test Championship winners are in action again next week, in the first of two Tests against Zimbabwe. Bavuma and his team have spent much of this week celebrating their Test final triumph over Australia at Lord's last weekend. Besides the squad doing plenty of partying in London last weekend, they also celebrated with their biggest fans at a meet-and-greet in Sandton on Thursday. However, they will soon have to focus on cricket again as the Test team's two-match tour of Zimbabwe starts next week. Zimbabwe Tests The 16-man squad, however, looks a little different to the group that battled the Aussies at Lord's and eventually won by five wickets. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been rested for the series, while fast bowling trio Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams, who have had recent injury struggles, were not considered for selection. Five uncapped players will hope to make their Test debuts, namely Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, Dewald Brevis and Prenelan Subrayen. There is also a recall for Zubayr Hamza. It is the Test team's first tour of Zimbabwe since 2014. The two Tests take place in Bulawayo from June 28 and July 6 respectively. India tour The Proteas Test team are then only in action again in November when they play two Tests against India in India. The matches start on November 14 and November 22 respectively. Bavuma and his side will play no Tests over the festive period. Picture: Federico PARRA / AFP European champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat to Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday after Lionel Messi lit up the tournament with a brilliant free-kick winner for Inter Miami. Botafogo shock PSG A first-half goal from Igor Jesus proved the difference as last year's Copa Libertadores winners all but sealed a place in the knockout rounds from Group B in front of 53,699 fans at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California. PSG are one of the favourites for FIFA's 32-team tournament after a dazzling season which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side into the last 16 were stymied by a resilient performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro. 'A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is,' goalscorer Jesus said after the win, which kept all of South America's representatives unbeaten at the competition in the United States. 'It was a difficult game and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal.' Botafogo took the lead against the run of play on 36 minutes as Jefferson Savarino's through ball split the PSG defence and released Jesus. Lionel Messi free-kick magic helps Inter Miami stun Porto at Club World Cup
A Lionel Messi trademark free-kick earned Inter Miami a shock 2-1 comeback win against Porto in the Club World Cup on Thursday. The Argentine superstar found the top corner with a second half set-piece to clinch a surprise victory for the MLS side and give them a strong chance of progressing from Group A. Inter Miami and Palmeiras have four points each, after the Brazilian side beat Al Ahly 2-0 earlier on – the Egyptians like Porto have one point. Samu Aghehowa's early penalty gave the Portuguese side the lead as they had the better of the first half and could have scored more. However Telasco Segovia blasted Miami level and then Lionel Messi's free-kick helped them claim a noteworthy scalp, in a match many thought would be straightforward for Porto. Co-owned by former England international David Beckham, Inter Miami played their first MLS match in 2020 and signed Messi in 2023, raising their profile significantly. This was the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, in their second encounter after Chelsea beat Los Angeles FC earlier in the week. 'It's a huge joy, the whole team made a big effort, we worked really well,' Messi told DAZN. 'It's a really important win for us and we have to enjoy it… 'You can see that we want to compete, and today we competed against a really good European team… we knew that today we were weaker, but we had our strengths.' Even with Messi, arguably the face of the tournament, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium was under half-full at kick-off, hamstrung by another 15:00 kick-off on a working day as it was for Chelsea's opener at the venue. Spain international Samu Aghehowa beat Oscar Ustari, who had saved a penalty in the goalless draw against Al Ahly, even though the stopper got a hand to his low effort. Uruguayan striker Suarez, 38, might have levelled after Messi threaded him through on goal but, forced to use his weaker left foot, Porto goalkeeper Claudio Ramos denied him. Javier Mascherano's side almost levelled through US international Benjamin Cremaschi after a charge forward from Suarez broke open Porto's defence, but Ramos made a smart near post stop to thwart him. Maximiliano Falcon brilliantly headed off his own goal-line with Ustari beaten by Rodrigo Mora's effort to keep Inter Miami hopes alive. Ustari denied Aghehowa and then scrambled the ball to safety as it rolled towards his net after Alan Varela crashed a shot off the upright and it hit him on the back, as Porto turned the screw before the break. Inter Miami levelled right at the start of the second half, with Segovia blasting home Marcelo Weigandt's inviting cut-back to stun the Portuguese side. Messi then sent Miami ahead with a goal all of his own making after 54 minutes. The playmaker was brought down outside the area and dusted himself down before arrowing a classic Lionel Messi free-kick into the top right corner. '(Messi) is a leader, he's the player he is, he's the greatest player in the world,' Inter Miami forward Fafa Picault told DAZN. 'I had a feeling (the free-kick) was going in. That was a great goal, a great show of leadership and coming in a clutch moment for us.' Miami battled hard to keep Porto at bay and groans travelled around the stadium after seven minutes of stoppage time was announced. Mascherano's players threw themselves in the way of shots in a way the former Argentine defensive midfielder would have done himself, and Inter Miami were eventually able to claim their much-craved victory.
