National Conference (NC) cites Himachal example to renew J&K statehood revival call

Time of India11 hours ago

SRINAGAR: J&K's governing National Conference (NC) added a new dimension Sunday to its demand for restoration of statehood for the Union Territory, citing the example of Himachal Pradesh's creation over 50 years ago to assert that such a revival could be ensured with the existing assembly and without fresh elections.

The statement was a response to reports which indicated that the Centre might agree to restore J&K's statehood, but only on the condition that fresh elections are held to elect a new govt under the revamped framework.
'There is a clear precedent. Himachal Pradesh was granted statehood while its assembly was functioning. The UT had a functional legislature. Statehood was conferred on 25 Jan 1971 without dissolving the assembly following the passage of the State of Himachal Pradesh Act by Parliament on 18 Dec, 1970,' NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said.
NC had won a majority in Oct 2024 after elections to the 90-member assembly conducted under J&K as a Union Territory, a status it attained after abrogation of Article 370 on Aug 5, 2019. 'When thousands turn out to vote, it reflects hope. But if their mandate is casually dismissed, it isn't just the vote that's defeated, it's faith in democracy itself,' another NC spokesperson, Ifra Jan, said. She described the reports of fresh polls as 'a tragic betrayal'.
However, opposition
(PDP) dismissed the debate over polls and statehood as 'nitpicking' devoid of logic. 'BJP has been solely deciding how J&K is governed, leaving no space for genuine democratic functioning. The region remains firmly under the control of the (Union) home ministry,' PDP former minister Naeem Akhtar said.
Akhtar pointed out that constitutional norms were tossed out the day the Centre revoked J&K's special status 'It was the LG who assumed powers of the Constituent Assembly under Article 370 on Aug 5, 2019 and recommended abrogation of Article 370 to the President.

In such a situation, these debates are of no use,' Akhtar said. Unless BJP undertakes a complete political reappraisal of J&K, these reports and reactions to them are not just misplaced but also juvenile, Akhtar added.
On Friday, NC president Farooq Abdullah had for the first time threatened to move Supreme Court if J&K's statehood was not restored, though he said he remained hopeful of such revival even after eight months the party's govt led by his son and CM Omar. 'We have been waiting patiently. But if the delay continues, we will have no option but to approach Supreme Court,' Farooq had said.

'What If It's Intercaste Marriage?' Top Court On OBC Certificate Rules Plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed all states and Union Territories to file their replies over a petition seeking to issue Other Backwards Class (OBC) certificates to children of single mothers from that community. The Supreme Court specifically asked the states to clarify what happens in the case of an inter-caste marriage. The Supreme Court was hearing a PIL seeking an amendment in the guidelines for the grant of OBC certificates to children of single mothers. The plea sought that the certificates be issued based on the OBC status of the single mothers, without insistence on certificates from the paternal side (Grandfather, father, or uncle). The present guidelines provide OBC certificates on the basis of paternal lineage. The petitioner said it causes serious hardships to single mothers. The bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and NK Singh expressed concern as to why a divorced woman should need to approach her husband for the caste certificates of her children. Taking note of the hardships faced by single women, the top court has asked the Centre to also file any additional suggestions they want to put forward. The top court has now posted the matter for July 22 for final hearing, when it will consider issuing guidelines to grant certificates to children of single women from the OBC community. The Centre had already filed its affidavit on the issue and favoured the petitioner. However, it informed the top court that a response would be needed from states, as they are responsible for framing such guidelines. The bench said that there was already a judgment of the top court issuing such guidelines for the SC/ST community. The top court said that the plea raises an important issue of the OBC certificate to children of single mothers.

Arab countries next target of US, Israel, says J&K Ex-CM Farooq Abdullah

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah warned the Arab countries on Monday that they will be the next target of Israel and the US as Tel Aviv and Washington are eyeing their oil and gas. "It is their (United States') long-time policy that Iran should not become a nuclear power. Even the Sunni countries in the region are against it but they do not have the courage to speak up. "Today, they think Iran has been attacked, but I want to warn them through you that one day, Israel will attack them also, because they want their wealth like oil and gas. Israel is only a facade, America is standing right behind," Abdullah told reporters after a party meeting at Nawa-i-Subah here. Asked about the impact of the escalation of the war in the Middle East, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said it will severely affect the economic condition of all countries. "I am hopeful that the (other) world powers are watching the situation. If this (war) escalates, the economic condition of every country will head towards ruin. They should try to stop it and I pray that they are successful as our condition in India is also very bad," he added. "Who told them (about the conditions)? Did they get a revelation? The media here is habitual of spreading lies, it does not speak the truth. Statehood is a right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It is not a favour to them," he said. Earlier, Abdullah said the NC has formed a human rights wing that will be headed by Pampore MLA Justice (retired) Hasnain Masoodi, who will be assisted by two other members.
