Iconic Scottish Highland distillery launches new campaign with award-winning director

The new campaign celebrates the skill and effort behind Oban's universally loved Scotch. Oban Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest and most beloved whisky producers, has unveiled a new campaign designed to celebrate its widespread appeal and the craft that makes it possible, and it does so with a dash of Highland humour, heart, and cinematic flair. The campaign, titled Being This Likeable Isn't Easy, is a nod to Oban's smooth, welcoming flavour, long considered a favourite among new whisky drinkers and seasoned connoisseurs alike. ‌ At the centre of the campaign is a short film, directed by award-winning filmmaker Tom Speers, whose previous work includes collaborations with Hollywood heavyweight Christoph Waltz. ‌ In classic Speers fashion, the film captures the warmth and personality of the distillery while telling a charming, tongue-in-cheek story. Set in Oban's stunning Western Highland home, the film follows the distillery manager on what's described as 'the longest run,' a determined journey to convert a whisky sceptic. After receiving a cryptic message, later revealed to be a social post from a newcomer to whisky named Stevie, the manager embarks on a mission to deliver a neat pour of Oban 14-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky by hand. By the end of the journey, Stevie is won over with a single sip, offering his verdict with a simple: 'That's beautiful!' The storyline neatly mirrors Oban's reputation, a whisky that consistently converts the unconvinced. ‌ 'They say you can't please everyone,' the brand states, 'but Oban took that as a challenge.' With over 200 years of history and just seven pairs of hands behind every drop, the distillery is proud to spotlight the depth of craft and passion that goes into producing a whisky that feels effortlessly likeable. 'Oban has long been a whisky that's easy to enjoy, but making something this welcoming takes serious craft,' said Jesse Damashek, Senior Vice President of Whiskey at Diageo. ‌ 'This campaign shows that likeability and simplicity are not mutually exclusive in the creation of Oban; to make a whisky this inviting, it takes time, effort, and precision. We take our easy appeal very seriously and know that it's due to the craft we've prioritised for over two centuries, rooted in the passion and community of the town we call home.' The film, produced in collaboration with Uncommon Creative Studio and Smuggler, blends comedy, storytelling and rugged Highland scenery, much of it filmed at the historic Oban Distillery itself. From the atmospheric warehouses to the narrow town lanes, the campaign grounds its message in both tradition and charm. Founded in 1794, the distillery remains confined by the town that grew up around it, making expansion impossible and production incredibly focused. Every drop is still crafted by just seven distillers using traditional lantern-shaped stills and time-honoured methods passed down through generations. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Today, Oban balances this proud heritage with a spirit of innovation. Its flagship 14-Year-Old is prized for its delicate smoky profile and versatility, equally enjoyable neat, over ice, or in cocktails like the Oban Paper Plane, a fresh twist on the classic Last Word. Its coastal character also lends itself well to food pairings, especially oysters, offering an elevated but approachable introduction to Scotch. The Being This Likeable Isn't Easy campaign will be promoted across digital, print and social media platforms, inviting whisky lovers of all levels to explore Oban's world of flavour and tradition.
