Bahrain's rising academic standards earned international recognition as 27 public and private schools were honoured for outstanding results in the 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), with scores exceeding 550 points in both subjects and placing them at high and advanced performance levels globally.
Minister of Education, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma honoured the top-performing schools at a ceremony organised by the ministry, praising their performance and acknowledging their role in strengthening Bahrain's reputation in international academic rankings.
The event also recognised 86 teachers, school coordinators, and ministry staff whose efforts helped fourth-grade and eighthgrade students achieve exceptional results.
Commitment recognised
Dr. Juma expressed appreciation to the teaching and administrative staff, students, parents, and relevant ministry departments for supporting Bahrain's participation in the international study.
He noted that success in mathematics and science is a key indicator of educational development and national progress.
He added that international assessments like TIMSS are essential for evaluating performance, analysing trends, identifying challenges, and shaping evidence-based education policies that improve quality and sustainability.
Forward strategy
Dr. Samah Mohammed Al Ajjawi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Development of Education and Learning Policies and Bahrain's National Coordinator for TIMSS, said the ministry is advancing development plans for both subjects, including the adoption of modern teaching strategies that leverage artificial intelligence.
She noted that TIMSS provides essential insights into how curricula and teaching approaches influence student learning, helping policymakers build more effective and future-ready education systems, especially in core scientific and technological disciplines.

India will soon have its own satellites to monitor spy satellites. How the technology works

TDT | agencies Spy satellites to monitor other spy satellites. India will soon have its own constellation of satellites to keep an eye out for other satellites that might be surveilling India. The project being undertaken by the Defence Ministry, which is in the process of being finalised, will have 'satellite mapping' capabilities and will be fully made in India, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ThePrint. 'India will be focusing on improving its presence in space in the coming years. This initiative will be a part of that larger aim,' a senior ISRO official said. This network of satellites will enhance India's space domain awareness and will also help monitor orbital threats in real-time. The project is being overseen under NETRA, a Network for Tracking Space Objects and Analysis, which detects space debris and other hazardous space objects. The official said that while ISRO will partner with the MoD in overseeing the overall design and monitoring of these satellites, a private Bengaluru-based space start-up, Digantara, has been contracted to deploy these satellites within the next year. How does satellite mapping work? The capabilities of monitoring foreign satellites is being acquired by countries including the US, Russia and China. These satellites have propulsion and guidance systems that utilise factors such as orbital inclinations and altitudes to get information and photographs from a potential target satellite. Some of these satellites are also capable of intercepting inter-satellite communications and links to ground stations. Varying versions of such technology are either already deployed or are currently being tested. In 2020, the US Space Command—an agency responsible for tracking all objects in orbit—flagged that the Russian satellite Kosmos 2543 had released an unknown object into space. This was believed to be a test of a new technology that could be used to destroy objects already in orbit. The Russian satellite released this tech in close proximity to another Russian satellite. 'Space is increasingly becoming a weapon for countries. Battles will no longer be limited to just the ground, but will also be fought in space. And countries need to be ready for it,' the ISRO official said. Focus on active orbital security India is already working on increasing its defence capabilities in next 'spy satellite programme', spacebased surveillance-3 or SBS-3, will launch a constellation of 52 surveillance satellites in the coming two years. Three private space startups, Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies, have joined hands with the government to give shape to this project. The Rs 27,000 crore project is set to significantly improve India's national security capabilities.

Ministry of Education honours NMS for TIMSS 2023 excellence

The Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma Honored New Millennium School by facilitating the school principal and science and mathematics educators for the outstanding performance of the students in TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) 2023. The school has been placed in the high category for Science and Mathematics. Even where there is a drop in International Average in 2023 TIMSS as compared to 2019 TIMSS, the NMS average has remarkably shown an upward trend. The school average in the TIMSS is much higher than the International Average. The results reflect the school's strong commitment to academic excellence, innovative teaching methods, and a robust STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum. TIMSS, conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), is administered every four years and assesses trends in student performance across more than 60 countries. The assessment provides valuable data that helps schools and policymakers improve educational outcomes. The school management expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for giving an opportunity to be the part of TIMSS Exam and for facilitating the mentors by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma.
