Oman signs anti-corruption cooperation pact with OIC states
Malé, Maldives – Oman has signed the Makkah Agreement for cooperation among Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states in the field of enforcing anti-corruption laws, aiming to enhance regional collaboration in combating corruption and promoting integrity.
The agreement was signed during the Saudi-Maldives International Forum for Integrity Enhancement held in the Maldives on May 6 and 7. The event was co-organised by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Maldives. Oman's delegation at the forum was led by H E Sheikh Ghosn bin Hilal al Alawi, Chairman of State Audit Institution.
The Makkah Agreement seeks to enhance cooperation between law enforcement authorities of OIC countries in preventing, investigating and prosecuting corruption-related crimes. It also covers the recovery of criminal proceeds and promotes exchange of technical assistance, expertise and training among member states.
The agreement addresses a wide range of corruption offences, including bribery of public and foreign officials, embezzlement, trading in influence, abuse of functions, illicit enrichment, private-sector bribery, laundering of criminal proceeds, concealment and obstruction of justice.
Oman participated actively in the preparatory meetings to review and discuss the draft agreement and submitted its recommendations.

Erdogan to Iran: Talks only solution
ANKARA: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday told Iran's foreign minister that resuming Iranian-US talks on Tehran's nuclear programme was the only way to achieve a solution to their dispute and the conflict with Israel, the Turkish Presidency said. Erdogan met Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on the sidelines of an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation meeting in Istanbul. In a statement, his office noted that Erdogan said Israel had to be stopped immediately. Erdogan said Turkey was ready to play a facilitator role to help resume the nuclear talks, adding "steps should be taken as soon as possible to open up diplomacy via technical and leaders-level talks between Iran and the US," his office added. Meanwhile, the United Nations' Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA will open an office in Ankara, President Erdogan said on Saturday, urging Muslim countries to give the agency more support after Israel banned it. Israel last year banned UNRWA, saying it had employed members of Palestinian Hamas who took part in the October 2023 attacks on Israel that triggered the Gaza war. Turkey has called Israel's assault on Gaza genocide and its move to ban UNRWA a violation of international law, particularly amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, which has been reduced to rubble with millions displaced. Addressing foreign ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, Erdogan said opening an Ankara UNRWA office would deepen Turkey's support for the agency. "We must not allow UNRWA, which plays an irreplaceable role in terms of taking care of Palestinian refugees, to be paralysed by Israel. We expect our organisation and each member state to provide financial and moral support to UNRWA to thwart Israel's games," Erdogan said. A Turkish diplomatic source said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini were expected to sign an accord on the sidelines of the OIC meeting in Istanbul on establishing the office. Turkey has given UNRWA $10 million a year between 2023 and 2025. In 2024, it also transferred $2 million and sent another $3 million from its AFAD disaster management authority. Israel has handed responsibility for distributing much of the aid it lets into Gaza to a new US-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates three sites in areas guarded by Israeli troops. The UN has rejected the GHF operation saying its distribution work is inadequate, dangerous and violates humanitarian impartiality principles. Omani industrial exports to Saudi Arabia surge to RO 1.618 billion
MUSCAT: Omani industrial exports rose by 8.6 per cent year-on-year during the first quarter of 2025, reaching RO 1.618 billion, up from RO 1.49 billion in the same period of 2024. According to data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) in May, the growth reflects the Sultanate of Oman's strengthening industrial footprint in regional markets, particularly Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia saw a 28.3 per cent increase in imports of Omani industrial goods, reaching RO 259 million—highlighting the deepening economic ties and rising demand for Omani products in the Kingdom. Nasra bint Sultan al Habsi, Director General of Trade at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, attributed the growth to the efforts of the Economy, Trade and Industry Committee under the Omani-Saudi Coordination Council. "This committee has focused on easing trade barriers, harmonising customs procedures, enhancing border transit, and digitally linking the two countries' trade systems," she explained. A key development has been the use of the Rub' al-Khali border crossing, now a vital commercial artery facilitating the smooth flow of goods and services between the two nations. The committee is also advancing cooperation in areas such as intellectual property, e-commerce, competition, and export development. Nasra noted that Saudi Arabia is now Oman's second-largest trading partner within the Gulf region. She emphasised Oman's openness to increased Saudi investment, especially in special economic and free zones that offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and attractive incentives—aligned with Oman Vision 2040 and Saudi Vision 2030. Mazen bin Humaid al Siyabi, Assistant Director General at the Directorate General of Industry, noted that there has been marked progress in industrial cooperation between the two countries, with joint meetings, workshops, and investor engagements intensifying over the past year. He said that 'priority sectors such as advanced manufacturing, technology, and supply chains have seen notable growth in collaboration, laying the groundwork for industrial integration and shared innovation.'
