Matty Johns reveals hard truth for New South Wales following controversial State of Origin Game II

Matty Johns has revealed the harsh reality he believes New South Wales fans should acknowledge following a controversial State of Origin II defeat to Queensland.
In the aftermath of Wednesday night's Origin match in Perth there have been calls for referee Ashley Klein to be demoted for Game 3 following a lopsided penalty count, favouring Queensland 10-2.
On the Backstage with Cooper and Matty Johns podcast, Johns declared the hard truth was that the penalty count was nothing but the fault of the Blues' poor discipline.
'Us New South Welshman, most people will point to that and go look at that, but I tell you what, we were f***ing undisciplined,' he said.
'That's it. Don't blame the referee. We were undisciplined.'
At half-time Queensland had eight penalties while NSW were not awarded any inside the first 40 minutes.
Queensland made the most of the penalty count, establishing a 26-6 lead at the break before holding off a late Blues comeback in the second half.
After winning 26-24, Queensland will now battle it out in a series decider at Sydney's Accor Stadium on July 9.
Many rugby league greats and punters did not mince their words following the controversial nail-biter.
Former NSW superstar Jarryd Hayne took to X in the first half, posting: 'This is why Origin is the greatest game in this country!!! Regardless of the pressure teams face, it is the team spirit that truly matters.
'Ps 7-0 pen count. Did some individuals attempt to influence the referees to force a decider?'
While another former Blues representative Jamie Soward said: 'That will do me. Ash doing his best to get in the way here'.
Former Penrith Panther Greg Alexander said on SEN1170, 'god knows what's going to happen in Game 3' following the officiating in the match.
'We have a decider. Boy didn't we really want one of those and not too subtle way to do it. Let's just make the penalty count 8-0 at half time. Eight-nil,' Alexander fumed.
'I don't think I have ever written a referee's name as many times on a piece of paper as I did last night, through that first half.
'My god I know some of the penalties blown against us were warranted, but if Queensland weren't offside a thousand times last night, especially on their line in that little period where NSW were attacking the line. I am going well 'what is he looking at. Is he looking at the line'."
NSW had to wait 45 minutes to be awarded their first penalty of the game, shortly scoring soon after.
A few punters responded to Alexander's fiery words with one saying, 'NSW supporters are sookie'.
'Doesn't help when a team is elbowing or eye gouging. Seriously, take a look at the ill-discipline before blaming the referees,' another added.
Five-eighth Jarome Luai escaped a suspension after initially being accused of eye gouging in a tackle on Maroons forward Reuben Cotter, while winger Zac Lomax got off a charge after a blatant elbow to the head of Trent Loiero.

Murwillumbah preview, tips: Ethan Ensby's Rainbow Lass chases hat-trick

In-form mare Rainbow Lass isn't just chasing a hat-trick of wins, she is on trial for a possible feature race target at next month's Grafton carnival. Following two solid wins over 1000m and 1200m on her home track at Casino, trainer Ethan Ensby feels to time is right to test Rainbow Lass over a longer distance in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1550m). 'She is going enormous at the moment,' said Ensby. 'She is obviously stepping up to the 1500m for the first time and being by Pariah, she probably isn't bred to get that far but at home, my partner rides her work and she is showing us she is that 1400m to a mile type. 'She sat three-wide working up the hill at Casino over the 1200 metres last start which is like running 1300 or 1400 metres. 'She does like a wet track so the Soft 7 will suit her. Ensby is looking forward to seeing Mahuika Maroi make her race debut in the Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1200m). The three-year-old has been safely beaten in both her barrier trials but Ensby said things didn't go as he'd hoped on either occasion. 'When she trialled at the Gold Coast, it was supposed to be on the B Grass but they switched to polytrack which I wasn't very happy about. 'I didn't want to trial on the poly but with the weather the way it was, she had to go around and use it as a bit of a gallop and hope for the best. 'She wasn't put under any pressure that day. 'We then went to Grafton for her next trial and she slipped coming out of the gates on the wet track and tweaked a muscle hence while it's been a while until her first start. 'She finds a really nice race start off in and although the 1200 metres will be short of her best, I think she will run a nice race with the expectation she will be better for it.' Picture: supplied Ensby has Shez Mysterious and Gold Puma in the Maiden Handicap (1550m) but is leaning towards splitting the pair and saving the later for either Port Macquarie or Lismore during the week. Shez Mysterious failed on her home track on May 30 but Ensby feels it is worth forgetting that run and judge her on her first two starts. The daughter of So You Think debuted with a fourth to Rainbow Lass on a Heavy 10 at Casino before coming from a conspicuous last when beaten just over a length in fourth place at Inverell on May 23. 'I think the heavy track and the quick back-up went against her last start. She just didn't handle it,' he said. 'I think it would pay to forgive her for that. 'I've given her a bit of time since then and the beauty of training at the farm is it allows me to put her out during the day. 'He first-up run at Casino was encouraging then second-up, she stood like a deer in the headlights in the barrier at Inverell and came out a clear last. 'She really closed of strongly though. Super Netball 2025: Housby, Nweke vs. Kopua in derby clash of NSW titans

One of Super Netball's greatest players has turned super fan of a game in which she'll be a central character. Champion goaler Helen Housby has snuffed out any idea the Swifts are disappointed the Giants are hitting their straps ahead of the NSW derby, saying she's excited at the prospect of playing in one of the most anticipated games of the season. The teams may be sitting at opposite ends of the competition ladder, with the Swifts on top and Giants in sixth place having just lifted themselves from the cellar. But it's the Giants who head in with the best form line, their back-to-back wins the first time they've had consecutive victories in two years, while the Swifts lost outright lead of the competition after two straight losses in the last fortnight. Throw in the Giants' recruitment of Silver Ferns legend Casey Kopua setting up a clash between New Zealand netball's past and future - in super shooter Grace Nweke - and there's every ingredient needed for a fantastic feast. 'It's the kind of game that you want to play in,' said Housby, who believes the form guide has to be thrown out ahead of Sunday's match in front of a sold out crowd of about 10,000 fans at Ken Rosewall Arena. 'It's got a story to it, and it's got excitement to it and we love trying to figure out ways to play on different players, special players - and I think this is no different.' As strong a player as Kopua is in her own right - despite having been retired for the past six years - it's the way she's bringing the Giants' young defenders into the game that's helped them take such a step forward and Housby will have her own battle against outstanding young goal defence Erin O'Brien, who has flourished under the former Fern's on-court guidance. 'I think she was a really great recruitment for them,' Housby said of Kopua. 'She's obviously been retired for a little while but I don't think she's lost any of her game sense, game smarts … and more than anything, it's the confidence and the composure that she gives to the defenders around her. 'I think they've probably been desperate for a little bit of leadership back there and especially with Jodi-Ann (Ward's) sad (knee) injury, she was the perfect person to come in and kind of wrap them into a solid defensive game plan and mindset. 'She's an absolute stalwart of netball, one of the best defenders that the Silver Ferns have ever produced and for the (Giants) to have picked her up, they'll just be gaining information from her, learning from her and in turn, they can use her body, her physicality, to their advantage, so she's going to be huge for them and I'm quite excited by the prospect (of playing her).' Kopua's likely direct match-up will be Nweke though, the outstanding shooter who has given up her New Zealand eligibility this year to cross the ditch and play Super Netball with the Swifts to improve her game. 'I've got no doubt that most young Silver Ferns probably see Casey as a bit of an idol,' Housby said. 'I haven't actually spoken to Grace personally about it, I'll have to have a few words with her and see how she's feeling about it but I think it's going to be incredible. 'I think if you are a Silver Ferns supporter, you'll definitely be tuning in to watch this across the ditch, because I think it's a pretty special match-up … and it's pretty awesome to see the changing of the guard in the Silver Ferns superstars and I can't wait to be involved and to see, hopefully Gracie shine.'

Nicola Olyslagers wins more high jump gold at Paris Diamond League, Eleanor Patterson third

Moments after leaving her rivals in her wake in the Diamond League yet again, Nicola Olyslagers set the bar even higher. Australia's high-jumping royalty leapt to gold under the Parisian sky, rising over 2.00m to claim back-to-back gold medals on the world's premier athletics circuit. It was her second jump that made the difference, relegating Ukrainian world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh to second and compatriot Eleanor Patterson to bronze in a familiar trio on the podium. But despite her seventh success overall after her most recent win in Stockholm, Olyslagers is not entirely happy. "Tonight was great, it was the first time we jumped so late [at night], so for mindset it can be difficult," she said. "I'm very thankful for another 2m jump, but I really want a personal best, so we keep training."
