‘Stop with the men': Big problem with reaction to Tammy Hembrow's divorce

News.com.au8 hours ago

When Tammy Hembrow announced her divorce, it came with a disclaimer that says everything about the impossible standards to which we hold women.
Ms Hembrow's divorce news, much like The Project being canned, isn't the shock of the century. The writing was on the influencer wall.
Despite only marrying Love Island alum turned podcaster Matt Zukowski in November 2024 in a lavish Byron Bay ceremony, the pair hadn't been seen together in a long time, and Ms Hembrow had been lip-synching to break-up songs online.
Both influencers released separate statements.
Mr Zukowski went with the classic Instagram Story with a black background (because a divorce post does require a respectful colour palette choice), and Ms Hembrow went on TikTok.
The fitness influencer sobbed as she discussed the demise of her marriage and said she was 'humiliated'.
Ms Hembrow tearfully pointed out the obvious that, when she married her husband, she thought it was going to be forever.
'Did I think this was going to happen? No. Did I want this? No. Obviously, when you marry someone, you do it thinking … that it is going to be forever,' she said.
'I blame no one but myself.'
Ms Hembrow came across as heartbroken, but also like a woman who knew she was about to get slammed because her relationship didn't work out.
'Obviously, I get a lot of nasty comments like, 'Oh, another marriage'. This is my first marriage, just FYI,' she said.
'No comment that anyone can say, nothing anyone could say, could make me feel more sh*t than I already do and more humiliated.
'I already think that about myself right now. I don't think those comments are getting to me because I'm already there.'
Ms Hembrow gets particularly scrutinised because she's also a mother and has three children with two different men.
Her son Wolf and daughter Saskia are from her relationship with Reece Hawkins, which ended in 2018.
Then, in 2020, she started dating athlete Matt Poole. They got engaged and had a daughter, Posy, in 2022 but split in the same year.
Ms Hembrow was on the money because, among the supportive comments, there was a slew of backhanded remarks claiming she rushed into the relationship or that they always knew it would end this way.
Some commentators were more direct. Someone said to 'stop with the men', which is a pretty wild thing to say to a woman in her prime.
'I'm sorry, but I am convinced it is you at this point,' another wrote.
In comparison, Mr Zukowski released his own break-up statement. He didn't address any potential backlash, probably because he predicts there will be none.
'It's with a heavy heart I share that Tammy and I have decided to separate. Both of us have struggled with this decision; however, he wrote that we need to do what is right for ourselves and her three children,' he wrote.
The response must have been good because he later posted another Instagram story and thanked fans for their kind messages.
While Ms Hembrow is trying to navigate searing criticism, Mr Zukowski is being met with empathy.
It's a bizarre double standard.
Yes, there's a difference in circumstances - Ms Hembrow is a mother - but otherwise, their relationship histories are similar.
Ms Hembrow has had two serious relationships play out in the public eye and Mr Zukowski dated his Love Island co-star Cartier Surjan and then a woman named Genevieve for over a year and a half.
The key difference is that Ms Hembrow is a woman and, when men date and have relationships or marriages that don't work out, they are seen as players or eligible bachelors, while women are seen as failures.
It is tired rhetoric. Wasn't Taylor Swift trying to shake this off back in 2012? When she dated a couple of men in her twenties, she was seen as desperate and like someone who couldn't keep a man.
Ms Hembrow, through tears, spoke about feeling 'humiliated' when she announced her divorce, and that probably has nothing to do with her marriage ending and far more to do with the mean stuff people say to women when relationships fail.
Somehow, a marriage can fall apart that involves two people, but only the women is left 'humiliated', and how on earth is that fair?
Ms Hembrow doesn't need to stop with the men … we need to stop with the sexism.

$5 Aldi item compared to famous Dubai Chocolate

Food lovers are raving a brand new item from one supermarket giant before it has even hit the shelves. Aldi is set to release its $4.99 Hugos Pistachio Bombs and Hugos Pistachio Cream Covered Pretzels this week – on June 25 to be exact. Pistachios in particular are having a moment, with a recent spike in demand for pistachio flavoured products thanks to the Dubai Chocolate trend, which has seen the price and availability of the humble nut soar. Somehow, some food bloggers have gotten their hands on the product days before it has even landed in supermarkets — and their reviews are in. Popular food content creator @NectoriousPapi weighed in, saying that the Pistachio Bombs were basically like the Dubai Chocolate in ball form. 'Not a lot of kataifi in this one, so I was expecting more crunch as you do with the Dubai Chocolate — but it's still there, just a lot more finer,' he said. 'The milk chocolate is a little overpowering, I feel like it would have worked better with white chocolate. In saying that, it's still delicious.' As for the pretzels, he said fans could taste a lot of the pistachio flavouring, adding it also had a hint of white chocolate and salt. He said if he had to pick out of the two, the pretzels would win. Meanwhile @eatingupwiththehannashians said it was probably their best chocolate offering yet. 'Oh my god, they're so big. I love that,' one of the women said. The foodies labelled it a 'slay' and said they loved the way the kataifi felt when they bit into it. It comes after Coles customers were divided after the supermarket giant released its 1.2kg Pistachio and KitKat layer cakes last month. Shoppers kicked off about the price of the two new cake offerings, which both serve 18 people. The KitKat layer cake, with luscious chocolate layers and crispy wafer bits, has a price tag of $35. The Pistachio version, a double-layered vanilla cake filled with pistachio cream cheese buttercream and topped with crushed nuts, will set you back $40. In comparison, a regular Coles mud cake costs $6.60 and serves eight people. Nectro also weighed in on the cake, raving about the nutty new offering, saying he enjoyed it, with the standout being the pistachio butter cream filling. 'Absolutely beautiful, it's a great blend between pistachio and white chocolate coming through. I could just have a whole tub of the filling on its own — I don't really need the cake,' he said. 'Overall, this is very, very nice.' The JazHandMade team also raved about the gourmet cake, saying it would 'be gone by the end of the day' between the five staff members. But many shoppers took to social media to comment on the price of the dessert. 'It's $40 though. I can go to a cake shop for that money,' one said. Another added: 'Really think Pistachio products are over rated.' 'Inside is all same with other cake,' someone else chimed in. One social media user said: 'OK now I know why we have a shortage of pistachios. I might have to buy this cake JUST to get my pistachios and throw the cake away.'

Australian Olympian Raygun back in spotlight one year on from divisive Paris Games performance

Australian breakdancer Raygun is back in the spotlight one year on from her divisive performance at the Paris Olympic Games. Rachel Gunn made international headlines when she scored zero points for her breakdance in the sport's Olympic debut. Gunn, better known by her B-girl name Raygun, took to sport's most prestigious stage with moves that imitated hopping kangaroos, wriggling snakes and the Australian classic, sprinkler. The performance instantly went viral and was the subject of endless memes and relentless ridicule from around the globe. About 12 months on from the infamous act, Raygun is the subject of an Australian Story investigation that delves into why the arts academic isn't celebrated despite being a sporting underdog. US breakdancing pioneer Michael Holman told the ABC there was a lot of backlash from the international breakdancing community because the performance was seen as culturally insensitive. 'The anger that came from Raygun's performance at the Olympics comes from a lot of different places,' he said. 'A slice of that pie came from people who knew what breaking was, saying, 'Wow, you know, that's not great breaking'.' He said breakdancing originated from marginalised teenagers with poor, working class black and Puerto Rican backgrounds. 'So her being white and Australian and jumping around like a kangaroo, that's going to be a loaded gun,' Mr Holman told the ABC. 'Whether she intended it or not, the end result was mockery.' While the university professor was mocked for the performance, others came to her defence including billionaire Richard Branson. The Virgin Group founder invited the Australian breakdancer on-board his Celebration Voyage cruise through the Mediterranean where she danced alongside the global businessman and pulled out the infamous kangaroo hop. Mr Branson said Raygun was plucky, brave, courageous and original. 'Hats off to her for being so bold and different. Since we have a couple of kangaroos on Necker, that move in particular certainly got me smiling,' he said. But the controversy did not end at the Olympics. Back in Australia about four months after the Olympic Games, a comedian was about to stage Raygun: The Musical when a legal storm erupted. Creator Stephanie Broadbridge cancelled the show after she was contacted by lawyers representing Raygun over fears it would damage her reputation. She later rebranded the show to Breaking: The Musical. The comedy club that was going to stage the show was also sent a letter demanding $10,000 from Raygun's lawyers. The comedian alleged the lawyers told her that she was not allowed to perform the dance moves because the kangaroo dance was owned by Raygun. Ms Broadbridge told the ABC that she was captivated at how Raygun handled the situation and was excited that a woman her age was behaving like that in public. 'She's the hero that Australia needed, the female Shane Warne. The one that's flawed but we love her anyway,' she said. 'I wanted to tell that story. I wanted an Australian larrikin story that was a woman.'

Surprise Aussie Orlando Bloom sighting amid Katy Perry split rumours

Katy Perry's longtime partner Orlando Bloom has been spotted here in Australia, amid rumours the couple's relationship is on the rocks. Perry is nearing the end of the Australian leg of her Lifetimes tour, with shows in Perth last night and tonight before she finishes her Oz jaunt with four shows in Adelaide. Earlier this month and several shows into the Australian tour, reports surfaced claiming that Perry's nine-year relationship with actor Bloom was all but done. 'It's over,' a source alleged to Page Six. 'They are waiting till her tour is over before they split.' The pair have been engaged since 2019, and welcomed daughter Daisy Dove the following year. But while Bloom wasn't present for the earlier shows of the Australian visit, it appears he's now flown to Perth to join Perry and their daughter on tour. He was snapped walking through the Perth CBD yesterday ahead of Perry's first show in the city, with their daughter on his shoulders. Perry, however, was nowhere to be seen. A source in People made the somewhat unlikely claim that poor sales of Perry's latest album 143 and its accompanying singles were partly to blame for the alleged breakdown of her relationship. 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album,' the outlet quoted a source as saying. 'It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' Other reports alleged that tensions surfaced between the couple over Perry's controversial all-female space flight back in April. A source alleged to The Sun that Bloom was 'frustrated' and 'disappointed' with his partner's decision to go ahead with the brief joy ride into space. Perry looked to be enjoying herself before Bloom joined her on tour, partying at a gay club night held in her honour last week in Melbourne. Perry cheered on the drag shows and mingled with patrons during the 'Poof Doof' party at Melbourne's Chasers nightclub last week, and even addressed the crowd to make a big announcement. 'Because you are my chosen family, a mother must provide for her children,' she told the heaving crowd in the club. 'So as a provider, I would like to open the bar for one hour. The drinks are on me, baby.' Perry and Bloom had earlier split for a year in 2017 before getting back together. The pop star addressed the past break on the podcast Call her Daddy last year, saying, 'We weren't really in it from day one. He was because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was like, I can't do this anymore. I need to swim in a different pond, but I had to do a lot real work.'
