Tiny but cosy pub in Scots village wins top award after nearly closing
The bar was named the Pub of the Year for the Aberdeen, Grampian and Northern Isles region by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale)
A small bar in a remote village has won a top pub honour despite almost closing in recent years. The Craft Bar in Pitmedden, Aberdeenshire, faced an uncertain future as it fell into disrepair.
But the cosy one-room pub was taken over by local councillor Paul Johnston, who has turned around its fortunes. And the drinking hole has pulled off a remarkable feat by being named Pub of the Year for the Aberdeen, Grampian and Northern Isles region by CAMRA.
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, represent those who enjoy a beer across the UK and they dished out gong thanks to The Craft Bar's impressive turnaround.
While Johnston had worked behind the bar in his youth, he had never owned a pub, but felt driven to act when Pitmedden looked like it would be left without a local.
'When we took over the pub was in a very poor state and had severe problems,' he said. 'While it was challenging, as a councillor, saving a pub in my ward felt like the right thing to do.'
Johnston was inspired by a close friend, fellow councillor Duncan Borrowman, who had turned around The Bailey Head pub in Oswestry, Shropshire, a venue that has since earned CAMRA's national Pub of the Year accolade.
With the help of his wife Roseanne, Paul transformed The Craft Bar into a haven for drink connoisseurs. Today, the bar boasts over 300 wines, 80 gins, and a regularly rotating selection of craft beers sourced from across the north east.
'One of the big assets of the north east is how good our brewing and drinks industry is,' Paul said. 'We use Fierce from Dyce, Six Degrees North from Stonehaven, and beers from Speyside.'
Two handpumps at the bar serve cask ales from a variety of breweries, supported by a wide-ranging selection of live key-keg beers from across the UK.
The lager lineup changes regularly, often featuring crisp German and Czech pilsners, while cider lovers can enjoy a classic pour from Aspall in Suffolk.
For those keen to sample more, a well-stocked fridge holds a comprehensive array of bottled and canned beers.
And with a staggering 400 beers and wines available for takeaway or to enjoy in-house for a small fee, the choice is nothing short of impressive.

That range, along with a clear commitment to quality, has made The Craft Bar a local gem, a place where Pitmedden residents and curious visitors gather to sample weekly selections and unwind in good company.
'I believe that well-run pubs have a great effect on the community. We help people come together and get things done – and there's no better thing than having a nice pint of beer to do it with,' he added.
CAMRA praised the bar's inviting layout and thoughtful design: 'A one-roomed corner pub opened in November 2017 and run by an enthusiastic local CAMRA member.
"Old church pews provide seating for some of the tables around the walls, whilst other tables are served by bench seating. Has mainly wooden flooring with tiling around the bar, which has a foot rail.'

Florian Wirtz has departed Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool and his exit appears to have been an emotional one as the Bundesliga side paid tribute to Arne Slot's newest signing Bayer Leverkusen delivered a short but emotional message following confirmation that Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz: "Look after him." The 43-year-old could not speak highly enough of the departing star. "Florian's departure is associated with lots of emotions for the whole club and also for me personally," he said. "He came to us as a 16-year-old and he built up close and warm relations with many people at the club over the years. "Through his attitude, his passion and his unconditional desire to win he not only motivated and inspired his teammates on the pitch but also the staff in the immediate vicinity of the team and throughout the club. "Florian never played for himself, he always put the success of the team first. On behalf of everybody, I'd like to say a sincere thank you. Florian Wirtz will always be part of Bayer 04." Despite his enthusiasm over joining Liverpool, Wirtz has conceded his exit comes with mixed emotions. "It's not easy to leave after five and a half great years," he said. "I've experienced unique things and incredible moments here at Leverkusen. The club always supported me and believed in me including during the difficult time with my injury. "I would like to say thank you for that and for the great sympathy shown to me by the management, teammates and all the staff on that day. And I'd like to say to the fans of Bayer 04 who got behind me and the team over all those years: It was an honour for me to do my best. And I'm already looking forward to a reunion on the pitch." But Arne Slot's new signing is pleased to get the move over the line to take on a new challenge. Wirtz is hopeful the Premier League will be perfectly suited to his talents. "I feel very happy and very proud," said Wirtz after signing. "Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. 'I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it's perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. Florian Wirtz details what Arne Slot did to persuade him to make Liverpool move
Liverpool have sealed the signing of Germany star Florian Wirtz in a club record deal worth an initial £100million, with a further £16m possible in add ons - after Kop boss Arne Slot compelled the player to head to Anfield Florian Wirtz has revealed how Arne Slot turned on the charm to persuade him to make Liverpool his new home. The Germany star has completed a club record move to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool have sealed a deal to pay an initial £100million, with £16m in performance-related add-ons. It is understood Liverpool will be happy to pay these 'aspirational bonuses' as it will mean they have enjoyed considerable success at elite level. If he does indeed hit all those bonuses, it will make Wirtz the most expensive player in British history, surpassing the £115m that Chelsea paid Brighton for midfielder Moises Caicedo. Wirtz, 22, has signed a five-year deal at Anfield - worth £50million. The Reds stepped up as Bayern Munich faltered, their 18-month pursuit coming unstuck as they played games in the German media with regards to what they would be prepared to pay Leverkusen, before Wirtz was left underwhelmed by a final meeting with head coach Vincent Kompany. In stark contrast both he and his family were blown away by Liverpool's pitch and particularly the first meeting with Dutch boss Slot. 'The conversations were always really good,' said Wirtz. 'I can remember the first time [we met] he already showed me some scenes and how he wants to play, how I could fit in the team. 'He was just telling me I'm a player he really wants to have in his team and I can bring the team a step forward, and I could just imagine it would be good to be in the team and to make it better. I have to make my performances every week but I'm here for this.' Wirtz admits he wanted to make a major step up when moving clubs this summer, and believes he has done just that by moving to Merseyside. 'I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and of course I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world,' adds Wirtz. 'In my opinion, Liverpool is one of them. 'I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything what the club offers me was really good. 'Every time I spoke to one of the [people from] the club, I felt like 'this is the place I want to be. And so in the end, I was really 100 percent convinced I want to join Liverpool. And it was the best choice.' Wirtz has also been learning English ahead of his move - having been taught at Leverkusen by another Liverpool new boy, Jeremie Frimpong. "He was my neighbour in the changing room, he sat directly next to me and I had to speak English with him," Wirtz reveals. "After I finished my school, I didn't really speak good English but he was teaching me a lot and making me speak in more English and better English."

Wirtz said: 'I would like to win everything every year! In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious.' Wirtz leaves Leverkusen having helped them to the Bundesliga title and German Cup in 2024 in a season they went unbeaten domestically. He scored 57 and created 65 goals in 197 appearances for the German outfit across five season in the first team and the attacking midfielder is regarded as one of the best young players in the world. Wirtz had major interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City but opted for Merseyside. Liverpool will pay £100m upfront to Bayer Leverkusen with the rest due in add-ons which are linked to both the individual success of the player and the team. The deal for the Germany international will break the club record £85m they agreed to pay Benfica for Darwin Nunez in 2022. And should they hit all the add-ons in the deal it will surpass the £115m British record which Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023. Wirtz added: 'I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it's done and I am really happy. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. Jeremie Frimpong has already been signed from Leverkusen for £29.5m Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is arriving from Valencia for around £30m after spending last season on loan with the La Liga club. Defender Jarell Quansah is closing in on a £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen and that means the Reds could move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. While a striker remains a target, especially if Nunez departs as expected. Newcastle front man Alexander Isak is certainly admired at Liverpool. Although, the Magpies are under now pressure to sell due to PSR rules so it would take a huge change in stance for them to suddenly listen to offers. The Reds will offset some of their summer spending with player sales and they've already brought in £28m from Caoimhin Kelleher joining Brentford and Trent Alexander-Arnold signing for Real Madrid before the end of his contract. With the arrival of Kerkez, Andy Robertson is mulling over a possible move to Atletico Madrid as his place in the team is set to be taken by the new arrival.
