India calls for global action on ocean health, showcases over $80 billion worth projects
New Delhi: India on Tuesday called for urgent global action on ocean health at the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France.
At the conference, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh pushed for global ocean pact and unveiled major strides in deep-sea exploration, marine plastic clean-up, and sustainable fisheries.
Dr Singh highlighted progress on the Deep Ocean Mission's upcoming manned submersible, a nationwide single-use plastic ban, and over $80 billion worth of the 'Blue Economy' projects.
India also backed the swift ratification of the BBNJ Agreement, advocated for a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty, and launched the 'SAHAV' digital ocean data portal, underscoring its growing leadership in global marine governance.
Addressing the conference, which is co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, Dr Singh reaffirmed India's commitment to 'Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water'.
He outlined how India's initiatives are aimed at reversing ocean degradation through science, innovation, and inclusive partnerships.
A key highlight was the progress on the Deep Ocean Mission's 'Samudrayaan' project, which is expected to deploy India's first manned submersible by 2026. The project aims to explore ocean depths up to 6,000 metres and is seen as a major leap in India's scientific capability.
Dr Singh also spoke of expanding India's Marine Protected Areas, which now cover 6.6 per cent of the Exclusive Economic Zone, contributing to global biodiversity goals.
On marine pollution, the Minister pointed to tangible outcomes from the 'Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar' campaign, which has cleaned over 1,000 km of India's coastline and removed more than 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste since 2022.
The draft marine litter policy has been prepared, and India continues to support negotiations on a Global Plastics Treaty aimed at a legally binding international framework.
India's Blue Economy efforts, led by the Sagarmala Programme and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), were also showcased.
Emphasizing climate resilience, Dr. Singh noted the restoration of over 10,000 hectares of mangroves and the implementation of shoreline management plans using nature-based solutions. India has also integrated ocean-based climate actions into its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.

New Delhi: A passenger on the Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat train was allegedly thrashed after he refused to switch his seat with a BJP MLA. The incident took place last Thursday when BJP's Rajeev Singh, a legislator from Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi, was travelling to his constituency with his wife and son. Mr Singh reportedly got a seat in the back of the train compartment, while his family members were seated in the front, next to the man who allegedly refused to switch his seat. The situation escalated when some men, allegedly linked to Mr Singh, boarded the train at Jhansi station and thrashed the man, who was travelling to Bhopal. A video that has gone viral shows about half a dozen men raining punches on the passenger while he was in his seat. They were also seen using slippers to assault him. The video also shows blood oozing from his nose and his clothes soaked in blood. Railway Superintendent of Police (Jhansi) Vipul Kumar Srivastava has confirmed that the altercation occurred over changing seats. Speaking to reporters, he said appropriate action will be taken based on CCTV footage. The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jhansi said they have registered a non-cognizable report (NCR) after they received a complaint from Mr Singh. In his complaint, Mr Singh alleged that while travelling with his wife and son, a co-passenger behaved indecently, the news agency PTI reported. When objected, the man allegedly misbehaved with his family and later called others at Jhansi station, who also behaved in an abusive manner.

16 return from Iran to warm welcome
Bengaluru: A warm welcome was accorded to 16 individuals who returned safely to Bengaluru from Iran on Saturday at the Kempegowda International Airport. Independent MLA Puttaswamy Gowda, representing the Gauribidanur Assembly seat and the family members of the repatriated individuals greeted them warmly. MLA Gowda handed over the Indian Tricolour to the returnees and raised slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' along with them. Speaking to the media, he stated that most of the returnees were residents of Alipura village in Chikkaballapura district. 'There are still about 80 people from Alipura village stranded in Iran. I have spoken to the Chief Minister and Union Ministers about the matter, and arrangements will be made to bring them back soon in a day or two,' he said. The returnees had first arrived in Delhi and were subsequently brought to Bengaluru. They explained that their initial intention was to visit Iran and explore business opportunities. However, once the bombing began, they feared they might never be able to return to India. They expressed their gratitude to the officers of the Indian Embassy, as well as to the state and Union governments, for the assistance provided. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said recently that students from the state currently stuck in conflict-ridden Israel and Iran are being well taken care of by authorities there, and will be brought back soon.

A CCTV video of the incident, widely shared on social media, showed a group of passengers attacking a man who was seated near the automated door of the compartment. Later, Singh lodged a non-cognizable report (NCR) against the passenger. In his complaint, Singh alleged that while travelling with his wife and son, a co-passenger behaved in an indecent manner. When objected to, the man allegedly misbehaved with his family and later called others at Jhansi station, who also behaved abusively. According to initial accounts, the clash allegedly began when the passenger refused to vacate a seat upon being asked, allegedly by Singh or his supporters. The passenger was later assaulted, with the attackers believed to be linked to the MLA. Commenting on the matter, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said the altercation happened over changing seats and objectionable sitting posture inside the train. The situation escalated at Jhansi station, where the passenger was allegedly assaulted by some individuals linked to the ruling party MLA. Railway Superintendent of Police (Jhansi) Vipul Kumar Srivastava told reporters that the assaulted passenger had earlier indicated he would file a complaint after reaching Bhopal.
