Birmingham HS2's Curzon Street Station revised plans approved
Plans for the revised design of Birmingham's flagship HS2 railway station have been approved.Changes to Curzon Street Station's development include a change from timber to aluminium in the roof because of more stringent fire safety standards, while the eastern concourse has also been re-planned.A combination of factors were involved with the modifications, including value for money, technical complexities and engineering constraints, a city council officer's report said.Redesign plans were approved by the planning committee after considering the report.
The station would display "high quality architecture", the report said.Chair of the planning committee Labour councillor Lee Marsham, who represents Nechells, said he thought HS2 could be a key part of the tram extension to the proposed new stadium and sports quarter for Birmingham City FC.
'Can we get on with this?'
Erdington Conservative councillor Gareth Moore said he supported the application, but expressed frustration at progress made so far.He stated: "I suppose my only key ask is, 'Can we get on with this?'."Labour councillor David Barker, who represents Brandwood and Kings Heath, said: "Happy to approve it. I would like to see the further parts of this project brought forward as soon as possible."
Construction work on the station began in January last year.But despite progress being made on the design, new HS2 Ltd CEO Mark Wild recently confirmed a "reset of the programme" was needed, including a review of the project's cost and schedule.Mr Wild recently said construction had been "harder than we would have thought"."So a combination of factors of getting a little bit behind and also the complexity to come means we need to reset the programme," he explained."The good news is that this is all completely solvable and I'm very, very confident."Asked whether the aim was for trains to run between 2029 and 2033, as previously suggested, Mr Wild responded: "We're so far into the civil engineering now, it's time to reset – as frustrating as it is, that will take me the rest of this year to do."Standing here, I don't really have an answer – I'm just going to do the work."We aim by the end of this calendar year to have firm advice about the time".

As UK households struggle with energy bills, staff at industry watchdog Ofgem enjoy 'woke' quizzes and Pride movie nights at 4.30pm on a Tuesday
Officials working for energy regulator Ofgem have spent thousands of pounds on ' woke ' events including movie nights and quizzes during working hours, the Mail can reveal. At a time when Britain has been hit with some of the highest energy prices in Europe, the quango tasked with regulating such matters has a host of 'staff networks' given money to hold gatherings over the past year. They included a 'Pride Movie Night', which started at 4.30pm on a Tuesday last July, as well as an 'End of Pride Quiz' which ran from 4pm to 5.30pm later that month. Another gathering organised by the LGBT + network was on 'Perspectives from Rainbow Regulators' which ran for almost 90 minutes on a Thursday afternoon last September. The quango also held an event on the 'art and history of black hair' which lasted 75 minutes on a work day in October. In total, Ofgem has spent £66,954 of the internal HR Equity, Diversity and Inclusion budget on staff networks since 2021, although funding was stopped in May 2024. The figures were revealed in response to a Freedom of Information request by the TaxPayers' Alliance and shared exclusively with the Mail. Ofgem has come under fire in recent years over the cost of bills, its handling of the prepayment meter scandal and its failure to prevent suppliers going bust. Joanna Marchong, of the TPA, said: 'It's beyond parody that as Brits face some of the highest energy prices in the world, our energy watchdog is spending time on woke movie nights and quizzes. 'Ofgem has repeatedly failed billpayers with its endless meddling in the energy market, which has both added to the costs of bills while also failing to prevent major firms from going bust. 'It's clear that there is a complete lack of focus on the core priorities of the organisation.' An Ofgem spokesman said: 'Our workforce reflects the communities we serve, offering a wide range of experiences and skills which helps to support our work as an effective energy regulator.' The spokesperson added: 'Staff networks are no longer funded centrally following the introduction of the EDI Expenditure rules last year.' Firms are spared green levy Thousands of businesses will be exempt from paying green levies in an industry shake-up, the Prime Minister will announce. Sir Keir Starmer will vow to slash energy bills for more than 7,000 firms by up to 25 per cent from 2027 when he launches his industrial strategy today. The ten-year plan to promote growth will see some firms exempted from the Renewables Obligation and Feed-in Tariffs. Manufacturers have previously warned energy costs are much higher in the UK than overseas. Government sources insisted the move would not be funded by raising taxes or household bills. Sir Keir said last night the plan would deliver 'long-term certainty' for British businesses.

Brexit rules spark ‘clear demand' for more motorhome parking, lobby group says
Boosting provision for these vehicles would generate more revenue for local businesses and increase the number of visitors to tourist destinations outside the peak summer season, the Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) said. Aires is a French word used to describe designated stopping places for motorcaravans – the collective term for motorhomes and campervans – which are much more common in continental Europe than the UK. Motorhomes by the sea in Italy (Alamy/PA) Post-Brexit rules mean UK passport holders are prohibited from being in the Schengen area – which covers most of the European Union and some other European nations – for more than 90 days within a 180-day period. That means many UK-based motorcaravan users are seeking domestic destinations for overnight trips. But a survey of 6,731 users suggested 88% are dissatisfied with the UK's availability of overnight parking in desirable locations. The poll also indicated that motorcaravaners spend an average of £51 per day in local businesses and £23 per night on overnight parking or campsite fees. Many respondents commented on the UK's lack of infrastructure and welcoming attitude compared with continental Europe, Campra said. Towns and cities could benefit hugely by embracing motorcaravans Steve Haywood, Campra Last month, Hampshire County Council approved plans to ban campervans and motorhomes from staying overnight at the south coast beauty spot of Keyhaven, near Lymington. It claimed the move would 'bring order' to the area. Campra managing director Steve Haywood said welcoming motorcaravans to an area 'can be a hugely positive move'. He went on: 'There is a clear demand – emphasised by post-Brexit travel restrictions – for more overnight stay options in UK towns and cities, and those towns and cities could benefit hugely by embracing motorcaravans. 'More councils are seeing the benefits of providing facilities, instead of suffering the cost of enforcement and bans, not to mention the loss of potential revenue to businesses. 'In Fleetwood, Lancashire, for example, the introduction of overnight parking in the seafront car park for £5 per night has seen a huge boost in revenue for local shops, and has been so successful that additional facilities are now being planned for motorcaravanners. 'Every council that has operated a 12-month trial aire has been successful and made the overnight parking permanent.' Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency figures show more than 416,000 motorcaravans are registered in the UK. A spokesperson for the Local Government Association said: 'Policies around overnight motorcaravan parking and the provision of facilities are a matter for local councils.'

Beloved kitchenware store that closed after 42 years to return on the high street
A POPULAR shop in Llandudno is making a big comeback – just months after it shut down. The Kitchen Range, a go-to kitchenware in the seaside town, closed in March after 42 years when owner Robin Whitehead decided to retire. Locals were gutted by the news, calling the closure a 'big loss' to the town. But now it's coming back – with a fresh new look and a new home just down the road. The revived store will open at 105 Mostyn Street – the old Sweet Emporium site – on July 2. It'll be run by Janet Gordon, who managed the original shop for years. She said: 'I cannot put into words how thrilled I am to be given the opportunity to manage the new Kitchen Range. "It was, and still is, a unique cook shop, providing our customers with an informative and friendly shopping experience." The shop was a go-to spot for locals and tourists looking for everything from pots and pans to hard-to-find kitchen gadgets. Janet added: 'Our customer base has always included locals, professionals and tourists, many of whom have shopped with us for many years." 'We're proud to continue those values, and we'll continue to offer a bespoke ordering service for customers seeking the perfect finishing touch or a hard-to-find kitchen item.' The original store closed on March 8, with Robin saying it was time to enjoy retirement after decades in the business. He first opened the shop back in 1983. Why are so many shops going bust? The new version of The Kitchen Range will keep its personal touch – but with some modern updates. It now has a website, social media accounts and email contact to help shoppers stay in the loop. Janet said: 'We're thrilled to be returning to Llandudno's central high street, surrounded by a vibrant mix of fantastic businesses of all kinds, many of whom we've proudly stood alongside for decades.' Suppliers are backing the relaunch – and say it's great news for the town. Michelle Colins, from national supplier Lifetime Brands, said: 'This beloved local business is set to once again become a hub for culinary enthusiasts and a vital part of the community.' 'As the only dedicated kitchenware shop in the area, its return is a fantastic boost for Llandudno, bringing back a space for quality products and trusted advice.' Locals won't have long to wait – the doors swing open on Tuesday, July 2. While The Kitchen Range is making a comeback, many other shops across the UK are being forced to call it a day. Retailers have been hammered by high costs, falling footfall and changing shopping habits. In Wales, Nibletts Mica in Builth Wells announced it will shut down once current stock runs out. The owners blamed "falling sales and greatly increased costs" driven by soaring rates and national insurance changes. Over in Yorkshire, All Types Electrical in Rotherham switched off the lights for the final time on Christmas Eve after more than 50 years in business. The Closet, a second-hand clothing store in Harker, also shut at the end of last year. Even bigger names aren't safe. Shoe Zone has closed more than 20 branches since last May, dropping from 320 shops to just 297. More closures are expected, with the boss blaming poor consumer confidence and unseasonal weather. Homebase is also shutting sites, launching closing-down sales at several locations across the UK. The Centre for Retail Research revealed that 13,479 shops shut down in 2024 alone – a staggering average of 37 closures a day. Over 11,000 of these were independent stores. With the cost of living still squeezing shoppers and business bills piling up, many high street traders say they're barely hanging on. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce showed that more than half of companies planned to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms also found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020. 2
