Hyderabad Traffic Update: 91 Lakh Vehicles on Roads Daily, Police Plan New Steps

Traffic Speed Has Improved

Some transgender people are working as traffic helpers, and the police say they are doing a great job. The police are also getting ready for the rainy season, working together with GHMC and HMRL to solve problems like water on roads.
Private Buses Causing Trouble
The police said private travel buses are also creating traffic problems. A meeting will be held with bus owners, and the police will take action to fix this issue.

'Though vehicle numbers keep rising, a 6 kmph increase in average speed is no small achievement,' Anand said. He said Operation Rope helped clear carriageways and improve vehicle flow. 'We're following a systematic approach to manage VIP and VVIP movements across the city,' he added. Explaining further, Anand said police are now handling VIP movement in a more planned and efficient manner. 'Earlier, we used manual mode during VIP movements. But now we're slowly shifting to automation, using manual intervention only when necessary. Even Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed us not to block traffic unnecessarily for his movement,' he said. He added that CCTV cameras have been installed on top of 25 high-rise buildings in the city. 'These provide a bird's-eye view of traffic, helping us evaluate and manage congestion better. More cameras will be added soon.' The traffic police are also using two drones to monitor road congestion and manage traffic. 'The drones help us identify where congestion starts and builds up, so we can act on it quickly,' Anand said.

On Friday, during a review meeting on traffic problems in Hyderabad City and their solutions, C V Anand noted that approximately 1,600 new vehicles are added to the roads every day. Across the three Commissionerates, a staggering total of 91 lakh vehicles are on the roads daily. During the meeting, the Commissioner provided guidance on the fundamental principles of traffic control and management. He stated that currently, 80 per cent of traffic signals in Hyderabad are operating on auto mode, which is effectively helping to clear traffic quickly. Regarding traffic violations, police are focusing on the quality of penalties rather than merely the quantity of fines imposed. This strategic approach, he explained, has led to a reduction in overall traffic fines. 'We are monitoring Hyderabad's traffic through drone cameras. To further improve Hyderabad's traffic system, we are taking assistance from Google. In addition to Google Maps, Google is also providing us with technical support,' he revealed. The Commissioner highlighted that, with the cooperation of owners of high rise multi storied buildings in Hyderabad, 25 'high rise cameras' are being installed on these buildings to obtain an 'Eagle View'. Through these, traffic officials can proactively identify traffic problems, alert local traffic authorities, and provide suggestions for appropriate solutions.

HYDERABAD: The city's average traffic speed of 25 kmph is the highest among major metropolitan cities in India, Hyderabad commissioner of police CV Anand said on Friday. He was speaking at the 'Traffic Action Plan' meeting held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre, Banjara Hills. "Despite the city adding nearly 1,600 new vehicles to the roads every day, we aim to improve the average speed to 27 kmph," Anand said. "Currently, about 91 lakh vehicles ply on Hyderabad roads daily, which shows a 45% surge since the Covid pandemic. The key to managing this growing volume lies in effective signal management," he added. At the event, Hyderabad city police also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google to implement Operation Green Light, a collaborative initiative aimed at optimising traffic signals. "Every time someone uses Google Maps for navigation, data is generated about traffic flow and congestion," a senior police official explained. "With this MoU, we will use that real-time data to manage signal timings better. This will not only help reduce waiting time at signals but also cut down on greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
