
Global Airlines promised luxurious flights on a fleet of A380 superjumbos. The launch is somewhat different
When it was first announced four years ago, it sounded like an aviation geek's dream — an airline with a fleet consisting only of Airbus A380 superjumbos, the huge and majestic double-decker airplanes that offer unrivaled comfort in the sky.
Promotional images released by Global Airlines, a startup carrier founded by former investment banker and Guinness World Record holder James Asquith, added to the excitement, with images of smart cabins and even an onboard 'pub.'
Now that the airline is counting down the days to its first flight, some of that gloss and excitement has begun to wear off and that flashy dream of an all-A380 fleet has still yet to fully materialize.
That's not to say Global Airlines isn't trying. Tickets have been on sale for the carrier's debut: an 'A380 experience,' as the carrier's global chief commercial officer, Richard Stephenson, put it via email.
That involves a flight from Glasgow, Scotland, to New York on May 15 with a return flight scheduled for four days later on May 19. A second flight is then scheduled from Manchester, England, to New York on May 21, returning May 25.
The good news is, both services are due to be on an A380. And, according to Asquith — who told CNN in 2023, 'I want a better product across the Atlantic and that's why we're doing what we're doing' — the airline will serve Laurent-Perrier champagne in first class and Rova Caviar Madagascar in both first and business.
A splashy aviation launch is nothing new. Virgin Atlantic is known for its legendary premium booze-soaked kickoffs. Even United Airlines' recent launch of a service from Tokyo to Mongolia capital Ulaanbaatar involved cupcakes and the ceremonial breaking of a barrel of sake.
Still, Global Airlines' debut isn't as big a reason for celebration as Asquith might have hoped.
Asquith founded Global in 2021 with a desire to return to a 'golden age of air travel.' That meant, he said, offering travelers something of a step up for their buck on transatlantic flights, with a vision of superjumbo luxury that includes champagne and caviar.
'I've flown on about 280 different airlines and sat there seeing what's good, what doesn't work and what can be improved,' Asquith said in the 2023 CNN interview. He was applying those lessons to Global, he added.
The A380 was key to Global's pitch. Following the pandemic, many superjumbos were parked with airlines believing air travel would not come back quickly enough to warrant their size. That made the planes attractive to a startup airline willing to take a bet on their 500-plus seats, as well as a savvy marketing ploy: come fly on the largest passenger plane in the skies!
The downside of an all-A380 fleet is that superjumbos are expensive to operate, from needing lots of fuel to higher airport landing and parking fees. An airline needs to fill most of the seats on the plane, and at a decent price, to make the economics work.
Things didn't go as planned for Global. After announcing a deal for its first A380 in 2023, the airline did not actually get a plane — a different ex-China Southern Airlines model — until February 2024. That A380 then had to undergo maintenance and other modifications to meet Global's specifications that were not complete until earlier this year.
'It was and has been gruesomely challenging,' Asquith wrote on LinkedIn in April. 'There's always something else in aviation, and I myself am guilty of harsh criticism. We have got things wrong, and will continue to do so, but we have the best intentions of making a better product as we go, and one that holds the highest safety standards as well.'
Global's inaugural flights will not be a typical affair. Airlines usually wait to have all their i's dotted and t's crossed with regulators and be ready to fly a regular service travelers can rely on before they begin flying.
Global is taking a different route.
It only plans the four one-time flights in May from Glasgow to New York and back, and then the same from Manchester. Portuguese charter carrier Hi Fly will operate the first flights as Global does not anticipate securing its own operating certificate from UK authorities until 2026 at the earliest. And tickets can only be found on the website of travel consolidator GA.Flights — not on Expedia or via your local travel agent.
In other words, would-be travelers need to know Global exists and actively want to fly with it, otherwise they're unlikely to stumble across the tickets.
So, why operate novelty debut flights when the airline doesn't appear to be ready to throw its hat in the ring to fully compete with other transatlantic players?
'These two flights are charter flights and designed to give people the chance to fly on an A380 and test out the product we are offering,' Stephenson said.
That may be part of the reason but aviation experts believe it's also an attempt to secure much-needed cash.
'Candidly, I think this is kind of an opportunity to try to raise some money, which they undoubtedly have to do in order to operate,' said Robert Mann, an airline industry analyst and consultant based in New York.
A roundtrip economy class ticket for the inaugural Glasgow-New York flight and back was available for $1,034 (£778.62) on May 1. Not exactly cheap for a new airline trying to make a name for itself in the market.
Travelers could book a connecting flight from Glasgow to New York via Amsterdam on KLM for the same dates for as little as $525 round trip, according to Google Flights.
'There are many reasons for these flights and we are delighted that we have reached the point where our first aircraft is ready to carry passengers — a point that many experts said would never happen,' Stephenson said, responding to the fundraising speculation.
If fundraising is Global's plan with its pair of inaugurals, leaving its A380 parked at JFK for four days between flights is an odd choice. Airlines must pay parking fees when they store a plane, especially at busy airports like New York.
'It's probably close to 50 grand — I hope they raise that much,' said Mann of the parking fees.
Booking one of Global's first flights comes with all of the risks of flying on a startup airline. They typically have minimal ability to accommodate travelers in the event of a flight delay and refunds are unlikely if there is a cancellation or other snafu.
'Travelers should stay informed, as with any startup, but it's an interesting story to watch unfold,' said Ahmed Abdelghany, an associate dean in the business school at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida.
Ticketholders on Global's first flights are protected under the UK's Air Travel Organisers' Licensing, or ATOL, scheme that guarantees travelers refunds and, in the event they are stranded abroad, a repatriation flight back to the UK.
Global's success 'will likely depend on whether they can carve out a niche market that values comfort over cost and whether they can maintain operational reliability and regulatory compliance as a new entrant,' added Abdelghany.
Those caveats extend even to the first flights. Given the expense of operating even a limited number of flights, the relatively premium prices being charged, the large number of seats to fill and the obscurity of the sales platforms, Global is already fending off doubts over its viability.
'There is no reason for anyone to be concerned,' said Stephenson. 'We have just flown our first passengers (twice) and everything ran very smoothly and with no issues at all, so our proof of concept program is going very well!'
The flights he referred to were two services from Barcelona to Berlin on May 2, and Berlin to London's Gatwick airport on May 3. The flights carried a limited number of passengers who enjoyed some of Global's onboard offerings, leading many experts to believe they were familiarization flights for crew ahead of Global's transatlantic debut.
Stephenson says things are going 'very well,' but at this nascent stage, the stakes are high for the fledgling airline.
But the cult appeal of the A380 and the prospect of riding on an airline's first-ever service — plus the marketing buzz amplified by Asquith's 1.1 million Instagram followers — could be more than enough to ensure it makes it down the runway.

One of New York City's last women's-only residences finds a new home in Brooklyn
Just in time for intern season, one of the last short-term residences for New York City women has returned. The Webster Apartments, a century-old nonprofit dedicated to housing female students, interns, and working women, reopened in a new Downtown Brooklyn location in May, two years after selling its aging building on the west side of Manhattan. The reopening marks a return to the Webster's roots and commitment to a boarding house style of housing that proliferated in New York in the early 20th century but has all but disappeared. It offers a relatively affordable option for students and professionals as the city continues to deal with a deep housing shortage that's left more than half of households rent-burdened. Monthly rates start at $2,000 for a shared room and $2,800 for a studio, with discounts available for early signees. There's space for about 150 women. On average, studios elsewhere in the neighborhood rent for $3,540, according to Rent Hop, or $3,965 a few subway stops away on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Read more: 12 types of popular houses for renters and buyers 'We're really trying to make it feel like a home,' said Tara Scott, who oversees admissions and marketing. 'I think we're getting there.' Women-only residences began springing up in New York in the early 1900s in response to the manufacturing boom, which created new demand for labor and made it more common for women to take jobs outside the home. But even as jobs for women became available, it was still considered somewhat scandalous for young, unmarried women to live alone in the city. Many also struggled to afford to do so on meager wages. The Webster opened in 1923 after Macy's executive Charles Webster and his brother donated money to establish a nonprofit residence for working women. The original location, at 419 West 34th St., was just a half-mile west of the flagship Macy's in Herald Square, where many of the Webster's first residents worked as 'shop girls.' 'Having been engaged for many years in the business known as a department store in the City of New York, and having employed a large number of unmarried women in that business, I have realized that the domestic environments of many of them are not conducive to their morals or health, and I have concluded to endeavor to improve the condition of some of them by giving them the opportunity to live in clean, well-ventilated, comfortable, and attractive apartments, with good moral surroundings,' Charles Webster, who died in 1916, wrote in his will, where he outlined his vision for the apartments. The nonprofit status meant rent was subsidized — women paid on a sliding scale based on their income — in a central Manhattan location. Rent also covered two hot meals a day and access to a rooftop terrace, library, and 'beau parlors' for entertaining male guests, who were forbidden past the first floor. The Webster wasn't the most famous women-only residence in its heyday. That honor belongs to The Barbizon Hotel, which was immortalized by one-time tenant Sylvia Plath in 'The Bell Jar' (in the book, it was called The Amazon), and whose list of other famous former residents includes Liza Minnelli, Grace Kelly, Farah Fawcett, Nancy Reagan, and Joan Didion. But while the Barbizon fell on hard times in the 1970s, later went co-ed, and closed in 2005 to be converted into condos, the Webster has remained, along with a handful of other women's residences, most of which are affiliated with religious orders. 'A haven' for working women Webster residents spanning multiple generations have fond memories of the space, with many praising it for helping them get established in New York. Regina Baumgärtner lived in the Webster in the 1980s after arriving from Germany on a work-study program. She recalls getting the chance to befriend people from all over the world, even though their cultures sometimes clashed. 'We girls from Europe had been sticking together, and then the Americans came to it and it changed the energy quite a lot,' said Baumgärtner, who now lives in Berlin. 'They took us to a lot of events, and we were very surprised about this openness and friendliness and trusting everybody.' A museum-loving Irish friend introduced Baumgärtner to some of the city's best cultural institutions, and she saw other parts of the country when she accompanied other pals on visits home to Chicago, Philadelphia, and Boston. Once, at breakfast, a tall American told Baumgärtner that she was shocked by her petite size, because she thought all Germans were 'so big.' 'I never forgot stuff like that,' Baumgärtner said. 'I think it helped to understand different cultures, and I think it's still a way of living in peace together.' Decades later, she remains close friends with Debbie Smith, who lived in the Webster at the same time as she was beginning her career in occupational therapy. In their free time, they'd hit nightlife hotspots like Studio 54 and Limelight, sunbathe on the roof deck, or pile into community rooms to watch television. 'It was a haven,' said Smith, of Greenville, S.C. 'It was this full experience to live in Manhattan, plunked in this gorgeous building.' By the 1980s, the no-men upstairs policy was fairly unpopular. Once, a pizza deliveryman made it to the fifth floor by walking past the building's elderly security guard, who had fallen asleep. The successful infiltration sent tongues wagging for weeks, Baumgärtner recalled. Two decades earlier, Maria Keenan said she didn't have a problem with the rules. She lived at the Webster from 1966 to 1967 while working as a bilingual secretary for tobacco giant Phillip Morris International. 'I was a Catholic girl,' Keenan said, by way of explanation. Young and still finding her footing in New York after moving from Chile in 1965 when she was 18, she appreciated that some of the building's older residents kept an eye out for violations. 'It felt good,' said Keenan, who now lives in Walnut Creek, Calif. 'Somebody was looking after me.' She frequented the roof with friends she made in the building, although in those days, sunbathing too long was risky. Exhaust from vehicles waiting to enter the nearby Lincoln Tunnel would leave them covered in soot, Keenan recalled. Modern realities By the 2010s, the nearly 400-room original building was becoming increasingly hard to maintain and out of step with the realities of modern living. Initially, the Webster's board planned to sell the space and construct a new one elsewhere on its oversized lot. But the onset of the pandemic complicated those plans. Instead, the board nixed the construction and opted to sell to another student housing nonprofit for over $50 million. After temporarily taking over a floor of a co-ed student housing complex across town, it began shopping for a new permanent home. 'We looked at a lot of hotels and a lot of different co-living buildings,' Scott said. 'It was sort of hard to find a building that fits the bill and allows us to continue to fulfill our mission as laid out by the original bequest of the Webster brothers.' The new building is a 20-story, 128-room former hotel in Downtown Brooklyn, which Webster spent a year renovating and redecorating with an emphasis on blond wood and soft pink. Given former residents' love of the old location, finding a new space with a roof deck was a priority. The new building also offers a gym and free laundry facilities, but no kitchen. Instead, residents receive $100 a week in credits they can redeem for food delivery. Gone, too, is the prohibition against men upstairs. Scott said the rule lingered as long as it did in part to protect the privacy of women in the old building, who shared communal dorm-style bathrooms. The new rooms all have private bathrooms, and in surveys and focus groups, many women suggested relaxing the policy. 'The world has changed a lot since some of those policies were put in place,' Scott said. 'The way that women were seen at that time was very different.' The sliding-scale rent model was also eliminated after it became increasingly hard to manage as wages in many, but not all, industries rose dramatically in the aftermath of the pandemic. The new location sits in a busy, transit-dense neighborhood that serves as the borough's commercial and civic hub. It's home to Brooklyn Borough Hall and a hulking federal courthouse. Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn's main artery, runs through the neighborhood, as does the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Though Downtown Brooklyn rarely lands on lists of iconic New York neighborhoods, high-rise residential construction projects have proliferated in recent years, adding thousands of new apartments, a Trader Joe's, a food hall, and a Lidl grocery store. The median rent in the neighborhood is $4,400, while the Webster's largest one-bedroom option tops out at $3,625. A subway ride to Midtown Manhattan takes about 20 minutes. So far, feedback on the new location has been good, especially from international applicants, Scott said. 'Brooklyn is seen as like, the hot spot, and a place where people want to be. Stock Market's Path Depends on Fed's View of What We Don't Know
(Bloomberg) -- For investors and traders trying to game out where the US economy, the stock market or interest rates are headed in the second half of 2025, good luck. There's simply too much uncertainty to be sure of anything right now. Wall Street pros were looking to Powell and the Fed for clues about what's next in a world beset by risks — from escalating war in the Middle East to rising trade tensions between the US and China. But the answer they got was a resounding 'we don't know,' with the central bank remaining in wait-and-see mode before deciding whether it can safely start to lower interest rates. 'If anything, the Fed's read-and-react stance showed just how clueless everyone is right now,' said Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments. 'As an investor, you cannot trade this, you cannot get ahead of it.' The S&P 500 Index is within 3% of a record high, but it's been holding tight in a narrow range lately. There have been just two sessions this month with moves of more than 1%, and the benchmark has barely budged over the past two weeks. It's been a surprisingly stagnant period considering oil has soared and the dollar has plunged on the global developments. Headline Swings The problem for equity traders appears to be a lack of clarity as sentiment changes from one headline to the next. You could see it in the stock market action late this week. On Thursday, which was a market holiday in the US, futures contracts on the S&P 500 sank more than 1% in the morning following reports that US officials were preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days. Then, President Donald Trump signaled that he wanted to give diplomacy a chance, which halted the decline. And Friday morning Fed Governor Christopher Waller said he could see interest-rate cuts starting as soon as July, which sent S&P futures jumping into the beginning of the regular session. But those gains turned out to be short-lived as Iran and Israel traded missile attacks and news hit that the Trump administration is ready to crack down on semiconductor plants in China. After all the back-and-forth, the index closed down 0.2% on the day. 'The S&P 500 is not breaking out one way or another because we've got crosswinds,' Ladner said. Fed officials left interest rates unchanged this week, with the majority of voting members seeing at least two more quarter-point cuts this year. Those views are essentially guesses, however, because the pace of inflation in the coming months and the resilience of the labor market remain unknown in the face of mounting risks. 'No one holds these rate paths with a lot of conviction,' Powell said at his press conference. 'We expect a meaningful amount of inflation in the coming months, and we have to take that into account.' And Wall Street is positioning accordingly. A gauge of equity positioning fell this week, led by discretionary investors who went from slightly below neutral to more notably underweight, data compiled by Deutsche Bank AG strategists including Parag Thatte show. With that cut, aggregate equity positioning now sits in the middle of the bottom-half of its usual band, the data show. The mood among Wall Street prognosticators is equally mixed. Swaps traders are pricing in a roughly 62% chance the Fed will lower rates in September, but there isn't a lot of conviction backing those positions. Michael Feroli, chief US economist at JPMorgan Securities wrote in a note to clients Wednesday that he foresees one cut this year, at the Fed's December meeting. UBS's senior US economist Brian Rose said that while the bank's base case still calls for 100 basis points of cuts starting in September, he sees risks skewed toward a later start to easing. And Bank of America economists led by Aditya Bhave wrote in a note on Wednesday that they aren't expecting any rate reductions this year. Uncharted Territory 'The Fed too is facing an uncharted territory,' said Bill Sterling, global strategist at GW&K Investment Management in Boston. 'We haven't had tariff hikes this large in modern history, and there isn't an easy model they can go to.' The S&P 500 is up 1.5% for the year after a stunning rebound from the brink of a bear market in April, when Trump unveiled his sweeping global tariffs. The gauge soared 19% from April 8, just before Trump paused the bulk of his levies, through the end of May on hopes that the trade war wouldn't turn out to be as bad as feared. But since then, the S&P has been pretty much stagnant, taking a few steps forward and a few steps back as each new headline rolls in. 'Long-term investors will be wise not to make abrupt shifts in portfolio allocations due to news headlines,' Sterling said. The challenge for investors is that the same dynamics that powered the S&P 500 to gains of more than 20% in 2023 and 2024 — the emergence of artificial intelligence, strong corporate fundamentals, and a resilient consumer — remain intact. But what's holding back optimism is everything else, the uncertainty around policy, geopolitics, slowing growth and creeping signs of stress at the bottom end of consumer spending. At their meeting this week, Fed officials downgraded their estimates for economic growth this year and lifted their forecasts for unemployment and inflation. Economic data hasn't offered much help either, with indications heading in divergent directions. A slew of figures pointed to early signs of the economy slowing down. US factory activity contracted in May for a third consecutive month. Industrial production declined in May for the second time in three months. A gauge of imports fell to a 16-year low. Job growth moderated. And May retail sales fell by the most since the start of the year. But that flies in the face of the latest reading in the consumer price index, a key inflation gauge, which showed US prices in May rose by less than forecast for the fourth month in a row, suggesting consumers have yet to feel the pinch of tariffs. Of course, those numbers can change quickly if higher levies set in and inflation jumps. All of which makes a hard road even tougher for traders trying to figure out how to position for the second half of 2025. 'The Fed has laid out its reaction function,' said Kevin Brocks of 22V Research. 'But investors will have to wait and see what the impact of tariffs on inflation actually is.'
