Rs 780-crore drugs seized, 1.2k arrested for smuggling in 2 years in Noida; 17 linked to international gangs
Noida: A total of 1,269 people, 17 of whom had links with international gangs, involved in the sale and smuggling of drugs have been arrested in the district since 2023. During this period, drugs worth more than Rs 780 crore have been seized across 1,170 cases.
Speaking to TOI, police commissioner Laxmi Singh outlined GB Nagar police commissionerate's efforts to effectively control the illegal trade of intoxicants, drugs, and narcotics, and take action against those involved in their trade.

"Around 102.8kg of MDMA worth about Rs 750 crore has been recovered. Along with this, 1.5kg of hashish worth about Rs 1.5 lakh, 7,134kg of ganja worth nearly Rs 17.7 crore, 572g of OGCanvas worth about Rs 24,000, 148g of cocaine worth Rs 8 lakh, over 800g of intoxicant pills worth about Rs 30,000, and 14.7kg smack worth more than Rs 2.2 crore were recovered. Around 49 vehicles were also seized," commissioner Singh said.
Earlier this month, in a joint operation by SWAT and Badalpur police station team, three ganja smugglers were arrested and police recovered around 149kg of ganja, estimated to be worth about Rs 40 lakh, along with a truck, from their possession. In Oct 2024, Noida police launched 'Operation Prahar', under which drug hotspots such as educational institutions, coaching centres, and slums were identified and raids were conducted. A total of 75 arrests were made and 115kg of ganja, as well as smack and e-cigarettes were recovered across several raids.
In Jan 2023, the commissionerate headquarters located in Sector 108 opened up a 'Narcotics Cell' and established a 24-hour helpline to receive anonymous tips about drug smuggling activity. The cell and helpline aid cops in obtaining information to verify smuggling-related activity, create profiles on persons of interest and understand the nexus of different gangs. They also help identify drug hotspots, and monitor and act against illegal drug supply in NCR coordinated through the dark web.
Speaking on the commissionrate's future drug control plans, commissioner Singh said that their focus will be on de-addiction programmes. Police will run continuous awareness programmes to inform residents, particularly youths, of the ill effects of drugs.

EOW arrests UP ex-BDO for misappropriating govt funds, grains worth Rs 27 lakh
The Uttar Pradesh Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Sunday arrested a retired block development officer (BDO) for allegedly misappropriating funds under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana during his posting in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia between 2002 and 2005. According to the police, the accused, Dayaram Vishwakarma, was serving as the BDO of Bansdih block in Ballia at the time. 'He was arrested from near his residence in Varanasi. Dayaram had retired as the District Development Officer (DDO) in 2022,' said a police officer. He is accused of misappropriating over Rs 27 lakh in government funds and food grains in collusion with others by using fraudulent and fabricated records, police said. Under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana, the Central and State governments had sanctioned various development works — including road construction, drain construction, repair of pathways, link roads, and other work — in Bansdih block, partially funded by the area panchayat. However, these projects were either left incomplete or carried out substandardly. 'During investigation, fake muster rolls were found to have been prepared and food-grain rations meant for labourers were never distributed,' said a police officer. A case was registered and later handed over to the Economic Offences Wing. Based on evidence collected, the role of 13 individuals was established. 'So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the case,' the officer added.

Toll collecting firm under scanner for evading stamp duty worth Rs 63 cr
Lucknow: A private company engaged in collecting toll on the national highway in eastern UP is under scrutiny for duping the local administration to the tune of crores. The fraudulent activity was detected more than two years after the private entity was awarded the contract for collecting the toll. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to officials, a company engaged to collect money from motor vehicle owners for using the national highway stretch in Bhadohi did not pay the required stamp duty to the local administration. Roped in to manage the toll plaza over national highway 19, which connects eastern UP with Bihar and onwards, the company was supposed to pay a sum of about Rs 63 crore to the stamp and registration department as duty. The charges were incurred for taking the land on a 15-year-long lease to collect the toll from road users. The agreement was signed between the stakeholders in March 2023, said officials. However, it was later detected that only Rs 100 was paid as stamp duty to the state coffers. According to the officials, a complaint case has been filed before the local magistrate to initiate action and prosecute the offenders.

Mathura man held for supplying drone to Naxals
Lucknow: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a key accused in a case related to a CPI (Maoist) conspiracy to revive its Northern Regional Bureau (NRB), which covers Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. The arrested accused, Vishal Singh, originally from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended from West Delhi. During a search of his residence, the NIA recovered multiple digital devices, including hard drives, pen drives, and mobile phones, along with other incriminating material. According to the NIA, Singh is an active member of the banned CPI (Maoist) and supplied a drone to the outfit's leaders in the Chhakarbanda/Panchrukhiya forest region of Bihar. He is also accused of providing technical training to cadres and participating in secret meetings with central committee members in Bihar's forested areas in 2019. The case registered in the NIA's Lucknow unit in 2023 pertains to a larger Maoist plan to reactivate its presence in North India through covert recruitment and support from urban operatives, including Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and front organisations posing as activists or student groups. These groups reportedly received funding from the outfit's Eastern Regional Bureau, mainly based in Jharkhand. In August 2024, the NIA earlier arrested Ajay Singhal alias Aman, the in-charge of the Maoists' State Organising Committee for Haryana and Punjab. Investigations in the case are still underway, said sources in the central agency.
