
China fires up powerful radar to search for lunar ice that can make or break moon race
Water ice is likely to exist at the moon's south pole, but it would be fragmented, scattered and buried deep beneath the surface, posing significant challenges for detection and extraction, according to a new study by Chinese researchers.
Using powerful Earth-based instruments, including the world's largest radio telescope and one of the most advanced radar systems, the team estimated that ice made up no more than 6 per cent of the material within the top 10 metres (33 feet) of lunar soil in the region.
The ice was thought to exist as metre-sized chunks buried 5-7 metres underground in the moon's most promising 'cold traps', known as permanently shadowed regions. Smaller, isolated patches might also lie near the surface, the team wrote in the latest issue of the Chinese journal, Science Bulletin.

The findings, the researchers wrote, could help in the selection of landing sites for future lunar missions and inform the design of the proposed China-led research base on the moon.
Hu Sen, a planetary geochemist at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing, called the work 'impressive'. He said that using China's newly built incoherent scatter radar in Sanya (SYISR) alongside the FAST telescope to search for water ice was a 'really creative approach'.
While Hu was not involved in the research, he noted that the results aligned with previous impact experiment findings and added new evidence that water ice existed on the moon.
'The study also opened a new pathway to investigate water abundances on the moon,' he said.
So far, no liquid water has been found on the moon. 'What we do know is that some water is bound within the lunar soil as 'structural water', and some is preserved as ice in cold traps inside permanently shadowed regions,' Hu said on Wednesday.
But the moon's surface is an unforgiving environment, marked by a high vacuum, strong radiation and extreme temperature swings.
'Before anyone can actually make use of that water, we need to understand where it comes from, how it's distributed and how it's stored,' he said.
One of China's key science goals for the coming Chang'e-7 mission, set to launch next year, is to determine the amount, origin and physical state of water ice at the moon's south pole. The mission is expected to significantly advance understanding of lunar water, he said.
Still, the topic remains contentious. There is no conclusive proof that water ice exists in usable quantities on the moon. Alfred McEwen, a planetary geologist at Arizona State University, said he believed there was 'extremely little' water on the moon.
'All the talk about what a valuable resource this is seems like baloney to me,' he said on Tuesday.
However, planetary geologist Clive Neal at the University of Notre Dame in the United States suggested that the actual amount of water ice at the lunar south pole could be higher than what this study detected.
Radar only covered limited areas, mostly crater slopes, he said.
'It is expected that the water ice would be in the bottom of the craters,' he said, adding that the areas visible to the radar were also affected by Earthshine, which could cause any surface ice to evaporate.
In recent years, researchers have paired high-powered, large-aperture incoherent scatter radars – typically used to study the ionosphere – with large radio telescopes to capture imagery of the moon's surface, according to the paper's lead author Li Mingyuan, of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics.
For instance, the Arecibo planetary radar system in Puerto Rico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia have jointly produced lunar polar images with resolution ranging from 20 to 150 metres, according to Li.
Building on that approach, Li and his team used the Sanya incoherent scatter radar and the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) to carry out a ground-based radar imaging experiment focused on the moon's south pole.
The SYISR radar, with its wide beam, was used to track the moon's centre of mass and scan its entire near side. Meanwhile, the narrower beam of the FAST telescope focused specifically on the south pole region to receive radar echoes, he said.
Thanks to FAST's high sensitivity, the team could produce radar images covering latitudes of 84 and 90 degrees south, at a resolution of about 500 metres by 1.2km.
Li noted that their analysis assumed the radar signals were caused by water ice. However, one of the key parameters – the circular polarisation ratio, which measures how much of the radar signal bounces back in a rotated form – can also be elevated by surface roughness or buried rocks, making it difficult to distinguish ice from non-ice terrain.
The study offered a preliminary estimate, Li said, and further work required integrating data from multiple instruments or radar frequencies to improve the accuracy of identifying water ice.

Chinese team's edible fruit coating can more than double shelf life: paper
Chinese scientists have developed an edible, washable protein-based coating that can extend the shelf life of fruit by 2½ times, by reducing moisture loss and microbial growth. The low-cost coating was tested across 17 varieties of whole and cut fruits, including strawberry, tomato, kiwi and mango. It was shown to effectively delay rot by almost a week or more, at a cost of just 9 US cents per kilogram of fruit, according to a paper in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications. The new strategy is as effective as existing preservation methods but reduces carbon dioxide emissions and the potential for toxicity, offering a promising solution to a major factor in global food waste. 'Addressing critical challenges in perishable fruit preservation ... we present an eco-friendly amyloid-like protein coating strategy developed through computer-aided molecular simulation,' the team led by researchers at Shaanxi Normal University said in their paper published on May 31. 'With edible properties, easy washability, and low cost, the coating demonstrates universal applicability for post-harvest and fresh-cut fruits.' Around a third of all food produced globally is wasted, most of it perishable items like fruit and vegetables. While all fruit have a natural protective barrier on their surface, harvesting renders them easily perishable due to dehydration, microbial growth, oxidation and ageing, thus limiting shelf life. Strategies explored to extend the shelf life of fruit include genetic modification, wax coating, cold storage, and using 'harmful' chemical preservatives such as formaldehyde. While the waxing of fruit is widely adopted, there are concerns over the health implications of long-term consumption, due to the potential of wax to restrict oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, according to the research team. Meanwhile, cold storage may be more biosafe than some of the other methods, but it is expensive and energy-intensive, which adds to global carbon emissions. Functional coating technologies using natural substances are a promising alternative, but developing a combination of materials that can evenly spread and adhere over the water-repellent fruit cuticle poses a challenge. The researchers chose to use a phase-transitioned, amyloid-like protein, a type of material that is used to make underwater adhesives and stain-resistant fabric coatings. Amyloid-like proteins are soluble and can be sprayed onto the surface of fruit. The researchers combined this with molecules of antimicrobial materials to make their coating. 'The superior performance of the amyloid-like protein coating stems from its enhanced spreadability, film formation, adhesion robustness and uniformity on fruit surfaces, which result in improved coating stability and prolonged preservation,' the team said in the paper. 'Our coating reduces carbon emissions by 90 per cent compared to standard refrigeration practices while extending shelf life by 2.5 times.' The coating can delay fruit rot while achieving 60 to 98 per cent nutrient retention, which is more efficient than chemical preservation without the risk of toxicity, according to the paper. While bare strawberries showed noticeable signs of decay after four days and severe fungal growth by day 10, the coated strawberries showed no apparent decay over this period. The coating was able to extend the shelf life of cherry tomatoes from six to 16 days, kumquats from 15 to 30 days, and from two to eight days for both bananas and mangoes. The material was also able to function under high temperatures, extending the shelf life of strawberries by three days under 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit). While freshly cut uncoated apples showed bacterial presence on day two, the coated ones did not show such signs until day eight, indicating that the coating could delay browning and decay even on cut and peeled fruit. 'These findings underscore the universal fresh-keeping capability of the [coating] for fruit, doubling or even quintupling the typical shelf life of highly perishable fruits,' the team said. Researchers from Tianjin University, Xinjiang Normal University, Changan University and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xian Jiaotong University also took part in the study. The biosafety of the coating was tested by feeding rats with spray-coated rat food. The animals exhibited no 'distinct pathological alterations' and their blood, kidney and liver function tests were normal. China pharma projects disrupted by Sino-US tensions
SHANGHAI: Drug research and development firms in China including WuXi AppTec and WuXi Biologics are changing project plans, stockpiling supplies and discussing testing locally, said sources with knowledge of the matter, as they seek to mitigate the impact of US-China trade tensions. China's sprawling pharmaceutical research and manufacturing sector serves global drug giants such as Pfizer and AstraZeneca with a low-cost development model that often uses imported clinical samples, equipment, chemicals and other materials to conduct work. Fears of delay in access to US supply chains and raised import tariffs are spurring biotech and pharmaceutical companies to avoid, pause or consider delaying the start of projects, according to three sources. They are also discussing testing US clinical samples in the US, instead of sending them to China for further research, a move that could increase costs, and requesting additional supplies for backup, three other sources said. The six sources who spoke to Reuters are director or executive-level employees involved in various aspects of the industry in China including research and development, manufacturing and supply chains. All but two agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity because of concerns about effects on fundraising plans or they were not authorised to speak to media. The developments have not been reported previously. US and Chinese officials said last week they had agreed on a framework to put a May trade truce back on track and remove China's export restrictions on rare earths, but offered little sign of a durable resolution to longstanding trade differences that have affected products ranging from semiconductors and jet engines to medical equipment and pharmaceuticals. "What kind of long-term policy it could be, you know, what kind of tariff would it be in half a year, in one year... nobody knows. And that's the problem. That's what makes everybody worry and nervous," said Chen Gong, co-founder of NeuExcell Therapeutics, a biotech with its main operations in Suzhou. He said the US-China trade tensions had made him more cautious about investing in a clinical trial and the company would delay its start if it did not have sufficient funding. Reliance on US imports has come into particular focus as trade tensions escalate. In 2024, the US exported diagnostic and laboratory reagents to China valued at about US$1.4 billion and prepared culture media for the development or maintenance of microorganisms worth about US$125 million, U.N. Comtrade data showed. In a sign of the importance of some of the imports and the damaging effect disruption could have on China's healthcare industry, some US-made goods including diagnostic reagents from Germany's Siemens Healthineers were exempted from raised Chinese tariffs, that company said in May. China raised its tariffs on US imports to as much as 125 per cent though it has since reduced that to 10 per cent while it works out a more permanent trade deal. HIGHER COSTS, DELAYS WuXi AppTec and a Chinese biotechnology firm that was its research client agreed in May to switch US-made reagents they had been using for a Hepatitis B virus pre-clinical research project into non-U.S. versions due partly to concerns about higher costs from tariffs, a source at the client company said. The project had been temporarily paused during the discussions, which began prior to May, the source said. WuXi AppTec said it makes "every effort to avoid disruptions or delays in the delivery of services to customers." Since April, at least 17 Chinese biotech and pharmaceutical clients have contacted Chinese cell culture media manufacturer JS Biosciences asking it to keep locally-made backup raw materials for production because they were concerned about cost increases or the inability to access foreign supplies, the firm's CEO Luo Shun said. "If they have a product made by us, and we rely on the foreign raw material supply and that raw material will increase in price or is never going to come, obviously it will impact their manufacturing of those life-saving drugs. So obviously, that's their primary concern," Luo said. Another Chinese drug research and development firm decided not to provide a quotation to a foreign pharmaceutical company interested in hiring it for protein drug manufacturing, due to delays in obtaining necessary US-made culture medium from a US subsidiary of Japan's Fujifilm, a source at the Chinese firm said. The potential client would likely not have accepted waiting on imports of new supplies into China, which would typically take two to four months, the source said. A Fujifilm Holdings America Corporation spokesperson said Fujifilm Biosciences, one of its life science business units, has made significant investments to build a robust global manufacturing network so that it could navigate any challenges or disruptions, without elaborating on its supply issue involving China. STOCKPILING, US TESTING After China announced a large rise in tariffs for US imports in April, WuXi Biologics placed a bigger-than-normal order for reagents made in the US with a supplier because it was not sure how long that policy action would continue, said a source at the supplier. WuXi Biologics did not respond to requests for comment. Concerns about the potential for US export restrictions led China's Innovent Biologics and multinational BeOne Medicines to discuss with Massachusetts-headquartered Thermo Fisher Scientific the prospect of not sending US clinical samples to China, said a source at the US company. Testing US samples in-country instead of in China would be more expensive, the source said.
