Xiaomi unit wins land tender in Beijing for EV manufacturing

Reutersa day ago

BEIJING, June 19 (Reuters) - A Xiaomi unit has won a tender to buy a plot of land in Beijing close to its existing car factory for 635 million yuan ($88 million), which it plans to use for a smart connected car and components project, a city regulator said on Thursday.
The win for a 50-year lease to the 485,134 square metre-large plot of land was announced by Beijing's municipal planning and natural resources commission.
The land plot is close to the second phase of Xiaomi's EV factory. Xiaomi Jingxi Technology, winner of the tender on Thursday, secured the second phase that covers an area of 531,130 square metres for 842 million yuan in July 2024. The project reached its final stage in April.
The tender win would make Xiaomi one of the few automakers in China approved to expand capacity while the majority of the sector is grappling with overcapacity.
Xiaomi said its new YU7 sports utility vehicle is getting more attention than the SU7 sedan and on its app, buyers have to wait up to 51 weeks to pick their Xiaomi cars as the company ramps up output.
Xiaomi, the world's third-largest smartphone maker, launched the SU7 sedan last year and has outsold Tesla's (TSLA.O), opens new tab Model 3 on a monthly basis since December.
The SU7's success is seen expediting the company's EV bid despite intense competition in the world's largest auto market.
Xiaomi raised its target for EV deliveries this year to 350,000 from 300,000 earlier this year. The company had planned an annual output of 300,000 vehicles in its EV factory to be built in two phases.
It will take orders for the YU7 at the end of June, CEO Lei Jun said on Wednesday. The YU7's release was earlier set for July.

World's largest Legoland set to open with replica of iconic skyline

Legoland Shanghai, poised to become the world's largest version of the popular theme park, is set to open its gates on July 5, marking a significant expansion into the Chinese market. Among its star attractions is expected to be a meticulously crafted mini replica of the Shanghai waterfront and the towering skyscrapers of the Lujiazui financial district, all constructed from the iconic colourful plastic bricks. The sprawling resort, the first of its kind in China, boasts eight distinct themed sections familiar to Lego enthusiasts, including Ninjago, Lego Friends, and Monkie Kid lands. These areas bring classic Lego pieces to life, featuring supersized constructions designed to immerse visitors in the vibrant world of Lego. While the scale of some attractions may not meet every visitor's initial grand expectations, the overall experience appears to resonate. Lyu Xiaole, a seven-year-old who secured a coveted pre-opening ticket, remarked: "I thought it would be huge, but it turned out to be half of the scale I dreamed ... But the attractions are beyond my expectation." The park's launch comes at a time when China's economy has faced headwinds, including weak consumer spending, a prolonged property slump, and high youth unemployment. However, Legoland Shanghai is banking on the resilience of domestic travel and the robust "experience" economy, sectors that have demonstrated continued strength despite broader economic challenges. Legoland Shanghai is operated by a joint venture between Merlin Entertainments, which runs Legoland parks around the world, and the Shanghai Jinshan District local government. The replica of downtown Shanghai and the city's waterfront is housed in the "Miniland" building at the site, where skyscrapers face the colonial era splendour of buildings along Shanghai's famed Bund promenade. The Miniland creations took 168,000 hours to complete, using more than 20 million bricks. "I think it's best to play Lego in Legoland because I have much less Lego at my place," said seven-year-old Shen Jieqi. Lego, the Danish family-owned toymaker that produces the bricks, is a familiar name in China where it has more than 400 stores. In Shanghai, Legoland will offer another leisure space in the city for those who can afford it. Tickets will start from 319 yuan ($44.46) in low season and up to 599 yuan on peak days. "We came very early in the morning. The atmosphere in the park is very joyful. The staff are full of passion," said Huang Xuanhua, 44, who lives close by the resort in Shanghai's Jinshan district and visited on Friday. "It has been a joyful day." THE UK's biggest energy supplier is launching its first electric vehicle home charger and you can get your hands on it for free. Octopus Energy has designed and built its own EV charger which will provide charging for as little as 2p per mile and new users will get heaps of free charging. 2 Named Octopus Charge and launching in August, new customers who sign up will get a 5,000 free miles bonus. The offer is only available to the first 100 people, so EV drivers will have to be quick to snap up the offer. Combined with Octopus' Drive Pack tariff, customers can get unlimited charging for just £30 a month. The new EV charger has built-in 4G and a uniquely designed charging cable holster so it can fit snugly in tight spaces. 'Charging at home is already better than queueing up at the petrol station – and now we've made it even simpler," said Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus Energy. 'Octopus Energy was the first energy company to launch a smart tariff, an EV tariff, an export tariff, and our very own heat pump." She added: "We're delighted to add Octopus Charge to our stable, initially designed to work seamlessly with Intelligent Octopus Go, and with other features to follow shortly.' Octopus Charge will first be exclusively available for customers of Octopus' EV leasing business, Octopus Electric Vehicles, before being launched to all Octopus Energy customers in August. Those interested can register their interest at the Octopus Energy website. New Nissan Leaf tested - it's bigger, better and goes further It's been a big week of announcements from Octopus Energy, who only days ago said it was bringing back its popular Saving Sessions for households. The scheme is a way for customers to earn rewards by reducing their electricity consumption during specific times when the national grid is under pressure. Over the summer, households have a chance to use their washing machine and charge their devices for free if they shift their usage from peak times. Octopus said the free electricity will be available during one-hour slots that will usually be held in the early afternoon. To be eligible for the scheme, you must be an Octoplus member, which is a free rewards program for the smart meter customers. 2
