Police propose Malaysia as host for 2028 Interpol General Assembly
KUALA LUMPUR: The police force has proposed that Malaysia host the Interpol General Assembly in 2028 as part of efforts to elevate the nation's international policing profile. The proposal, according to outgoing Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, has been submitted to the government through the Home Minister. "This initiative is part of our broader effort to position the police force on the international stage by elevating the Kuala Lumpur Police College as a regional hub for cybercrime and narcotics research in Asia," he said in his farewell speech during the handing-over of duties ceremony held at the Police Training Centre today. He emphasised that the vision is to place the Police College on par with leading law enforcement training institutions such as the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Bangkok and the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) in Semarang, Indonesia. "To strengthen this effort, four senior officers have been directly involved in the Interpol Joint Working Group. "As part of its global outreach, we have already begun hosting high-level international policing programmes such as the police special dialogue I and II, the Seminar on Cybercrime and Substance Abuse Consciousness, and the Asia International Security Summit and Expo (AiSSE) 2025," he said. He said these efforts have borne fruit, including the signing of memorandums of understanding between the Malaysian government and China, as well as the Australian federal police. "These agreements cover collaboration in technology, expertise and research, particularly in areas such as facial recognition systems and AI-powered CCTV surveillance, to combat transnational crime," Razarudin said.
