The Lion In Winter drawn widest of all in Derby
The Lion In Winter will have to defy stall 19 if the one-time ante-post favourite for the Betfred Derby is to bounce back at Epsom, where he has been overlooked by Ryan Moore in favour of Delacroix.
Aidan O'Brien's colt — who will be ridden by Colin Keane — lost his unbeaten record in the Dante and as well as aiming to emulate Workforce in overcoming defeat at York to prevail in the blue riband, he now has the widest draw of all to overcome.
Stablemate and current market leader Delacroix fared only marginally better in stall 14, while O'Brien's third representative, Lambourn, the Chester Vase winner, is in stall 10 under Wayne Lordan.
Charlie Appleby's 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court drew stall seven, as the Godolphin runner attempts to keep his Triple Crown dreams alive.
For the first time ever, the race was subject to 72-hour declarations, with Epsom hoping the change helps to build anticipation ahead of the premier Classic.
There will be a second runner in the Godolphin blue as Saeed bin Suroor's Tornado Alert (11), fourth in the Guineas, also runs for Sheikh Mohammed's operation.
Ralph Beckett's Pride Of Arras arrives unbeaten and a smooth winner of the Dante, which is traditionally one of the strongest trials, but he is posted wide in 16, with stablemate Stanhope Gardens on the inside in two.
John and Thady Gosden also have two contenders with Damysus (15) and Nightwalker (five), who were second and fifth in the Dante.
There are two runners from France in Francis-Henri Graffard's Midak (four) and Henri-Francois Devin's New Ground (17), with the pair both supplemented for the race on Monday.
Midak will sport the famous silks of the Aga Khan Studs in the premier Classic, which is this year run in honour of the late Aga Khan IV, and connections are daring to dream he has the right attributes to justify his £75,000 supplementary fee.
"He's definitely a horse improving with his races and will definitely get the trip," explained Nemone Routh, racing manager for the Aga Khan Studs.
"We're not sure on his form lines and how it stacks up, but all he can do is win and he's won every start.
"He's going to have to handle the track and he's a big horse with a big, long stride. Mickael Barzalona (jockey) thinks he will handle the track because he's well balanced but you never know until they get there.
"We would be very happy to see him finish in the first three or even first five, but he is a bit of an unknown quantity and he does everything easily at home. It's a little bit of a shot in the dark, but we thought it was worth it."
Charlie Johnston has declared both Lazy Griff (three), second to Lambourn at Chester, and Green Storm (eight), the mount of Billy Loughnane.
Al Wasl Storm (13), Nightime Dancer (nine), Rogue Impact (one), Sea Scout (18), Tennessee Stud (12) and Tuscan Hills (six) complete the list.
Epsom's clerk of the course Andrew Cooper expects the ground to ride on the easy side of good at the weekend.
He said "It's been a difficult spring, it's been so dry, this is my 30th Derby and I've never known such a prolonged dry period.
"It's been challenging, it hasn't been great for grass, it's been constant irrigation just to get where we want to be.
"Here and now I would call it good, that follows 3.5 millimetres of rain yesterday afternoon which was forecast but very localised.
"It looks like another spell of rain is coming tomorrow and Saturday, with the potential to have some heavy showers. It's unsettled for sure. On a raceday it doesn't take a lot to start shifting descriptions.
"I can't see a scenario with ground any quicker than good on Saturday and there's every indication we'll be on the slower side through the two days."

Willie Mullins has added his tribute to Kevin Prendergast, following the multiple Classic-winning trainer's death on Friday at the age of 92. Prendergast - son of the legendary Paddy 'Darkie' Prendergast - was a hugely popular and respected figure, landing the last of his Classic successes with Awtaad in the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2016. "I was sorry to hear about Kevin. He was a tremendous trainer, who always had a word for you," said Mullins, the reigning champion National Hunt trainer in Ireland and Britain. "He had an opinion on everything and that opinion was valued by people because he'd been through it, he knew the good days and he knew the bad days. "He was a tremendous character who will be sadly missed. A proper giant of the game, he did the hard work and he knew everything about the game." Former trainer Mick Halford, who now represents Joseph O'Brien on racecourses, said: "Kevin was a master on the Curragh when I started. He was somebody I always looked up to, his horses were always a credit to him. "He was a great man to talk to, a great man for advice, and for a bit of slagging! "He was a lovely man and I had a lot of time for him, and he will be sadly missed on the Curragh. "He led a full life, he was a great example to us all."

Royal Ascot is an absolute beast and keeps getting bigger – but Charlie Appleby can't buy a winner there
THE beast that is Royal Ascot just keeps on getting, erm, beastier. I don't think that's a word, but oh well. Across the board, attendances have been dipping at our biggest tracks after a post-Covid surge. But this meeting continues to buck the trend. 1 Field Of Gold has been the start of the Ascot show this week Credit: PA Crowds have been up on each of the first four days this week — no doubt thanks also to the sweltering weather. Ascot has thoroughly deserved to have its days in the sun, though. As much as I've become a dinosaur and roll my eyes at things considered 'Instagrammable', that's exactly what this meeting is . . . and people can't get enough. From the moment the gates opened punters were streaming in and queuing for 20 or 30 minutes at four designated selfie spots. The action has been good off the track, but even better on it. It's one of the great weeks of the year and people like to be a part of it. Long may that continue. The game's wealthiest owners spend millions to have runners here and the result, as ever, has been a top-class four days of racing with one day still to come. And, Jesus wept, it's been hot. So hot, in fact, the icing on the cakes in the press room was close to melting. You don't realise how tough we have it sometimes. Thanks in advance for your sympathy. There is no doubt in my mind who the star performer of the week was, and that's Field Of Gold. He won the St James's Palace by three and a half lengths and it could have been even more comprehensive had Colin Keane delayed his challenge a little longer. Those with a greater grasp of the formbook than me reckon he is the best miler since his old man Kingman 11 years ago — it's hard to argue on what he's done the last twice at the Curragh and Ascot. Most read in Horse Racing The galloping grey got the Johnny G show rolling, and what a difference a year makes. In 2024, Gosden was scrabbling around looking for a half decent horse, and all of a sudden he's got a stable full of them. In contrast, what a complete nightmare it's been for Godolphin's main man Charlie Appleby. His last winner at Royal Ascot was in 2022, when Naval Crown struck at 33-1, and he has now had 35 straight runners without a winner at the Royal meeting. He had lots of beaten fancies last year and this week it's been a similar tale of woe, with Notable Speech (4-1), Ruling Court (4-1), Cinderella's Dream (5-4f) and Shadow Of Light (6-4f) among those turned over at short odds. It certainly does not bode well for his two fancied runners Treanmor and Rebel's Romance today. It's three years in a row now that Appleby has got off to a fast start in the spring before spluttering to a halt in early summer. What on earth is happening? Are the horses peaking early and unable to back up? Appleby must be sick of the sight of all those top hats and tails by now. And it must hurt even more that Godolphin have had three winners this week, two trained by Gosden and one by Saeed bin Suroor. I bet Saeed is secretly over the moon — he has been starved of ammunition over the last decade having falling down the pecking order with Sheikh Mo, but he has shown repeatedly he can still get the job done on the big days. If it's the most important week of the year for trainers, it's probably more significant for the men and women in the weighing room. A couple of jocks who were in the wilderness coming here were Richard Kingscote and Kieran Shoemark, but both went home with winners under their belts. You could see the weight of the world melt off Shoemark's shoulders in particular after he guided 22-1 shot Never Let Go home in the Sandringham yesterday. Whatever you think about his ability in the saddle, the bloke has clearly suffered since losing the Gosden gig and you'd have to have a heart of stone to not wish him well going forwards. Mind you, one jockey who hardly did his reputation on these shores any good was the mercurial Frenchman Mickael Barzalona. Zarigana travelled like stink in the Coronation but he couldn't lift the hot favourite home, just a couple of weeks after losing another tight one at Epsom on popular punters' pick Calandagan. He was only appointed as the No1 jock to the Aga Khan at the start of the year but, after this latest dud, he'll surely be feeling the heat . . . and that makes two of us.
