Nissan offers US workers buyouts, halts pay rises: internal emails
Japan's Nissan has started offering buyouts to U.S. workers and has suspended merit-based wage increases worldwide, internal emails reviewed by Reuters showed, as the automaker expands cost cuts amid weak performance in key markets. Fiona Jones reports.
Nissan has recalled thousands of newer vehicles due to an issue with the models' center console display, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Nissan North America, Inc. submitted the recall on May 15 for certain 2025 Frontier and Kicks vehicles, the NHTSA said. According to the recall notice, the center information display unit could display a blank screen when shifted into reverse, thus causing the vehicles to not be in compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.
"A rearview image that does not display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash," the NHTSA notice said.
Which Nissan models are impacted by the recall?
The two Nissan models affected by the recall, which the NHTSA says impact 79,755 vehicles, include:
Nissan Frontier 2025
Nissan Kicks 2025
What should owners of the affected Nissan models do?
Nissan owners affected by the recall should contact their dealers, who will update the software of their vehicle's center information display, free of charge, according to the NHTSA.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 1, the agency said.
The manufacturer numbers for this recall are PD152 and PMA48.

Wolfspeed nears bankruptcy deal with lenders including Apollo, Bloomberg News reports

(Reuters) -Wolfspeed will be taken over by creditors including Apollo Global Management under a proposal that would put the struggling chipmaker into bankruptcy, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the plan. The company will soon announce a deal for a so-called prepackaged bankruptcy, that would be long enough to slash billions in debt, the report said. After a restructuring support agreement is signed, Wolfspeed will ask creditors to vote on the plan and then file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Shares of Wolfspeed, which makes chips using silicon carbide — a more energy-efficient material than traditional silicon, rose about 3% to $1.29 on Wednesday. The stock had fallen about 81% so far this year. Wolfspeed and Apollo did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The chipmaker raised going-concern doubts earlier in May, as deepening economic uncertainty stemming from changing U.S. trade policies, combined with weakening demand, triggered a series of financial challenges for the company. As of March, the company had about $1.33 billion in unrestricted cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, and about $6.5 billion of debt obligations, it said in a regulatory filing in May. In a prepackaged bankruptcy, companies and their creditors agree on a reorganization plan prior to the bankruptcy filing and creditors even vote on the plan. Shareholders could recover as much as 5% in the proposed scenario, the report said. In a typical bankruptcy, shareholders are usually wiped out because creditors must be paid first, and there often is not enough value left for equity holders. In 2023, Wolfspeed announced $1.25 billion in debt financing led by Apollo, with the option to increase the total to as much as $2 billion to support the company's U.S. expansion plans.

Kroger lifts annual sales target on resilient demand for groceries

(Reuters) -Kroger (KR) raised its annual identical sales forecast on Friday, betting on robust demand for groceries at its stores even as consumers deal with still-high inflation. Demand for essentials and groceries has remained stable despite Americans pulling back on discretionary purchases, helping supermarket chains such as Kroger. Most other retailers have tempered their expectations for the year. Kroger has also invested in sprucing up its curbside pick-ups as well as its more affordable private label brands as it battles stiff competition from retail bellwether Walmart (WMT). Still, Kroger maintained its annual earnings per share forecast, with new CFO David Kennerley noting in a statement that the macroeconomic environment remained uncertain. The company expects full-year 2025 identical sales growth of 2.25% to 3.25%, compared with its prior target of 2% to 3% growth. Kroger reported first-quarter identical sales growth of 3.2%, beating analysts' average expectation of 2.4%, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. The grocer's shares were down marginally in premarket trading. They have risen about 7% so far this year. If it's hot outside, it's even hotter in your vehicle. Never leave pets or children unattended.

We're gong to see high temperatures next week in Indy and it's important to remember that if it's hot outside, it's even hotter in your vehicle. On hot summer days, always double check your backseat for passengers (whether that be pets or children), drink lots of water and be sure to watch for signs of heat cramps, exhaustion or stroke. It is never safe to leave a child, disabled person or pet locked in a car. For more information about how cars can heat up quickly when left in the sun, check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website in both English and Spanish. While this applies all year round, it is especially important on warm or hot summer days. Every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles, according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise almost 20° F in just 10 minutes, and almost 30° F in 20 minutes. The longer a pet, child or person is inside a car turned off in the heat, the higher it goes. At one hour, your vehicle's inside temperature can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that's 110 degrees inside a car. More on heat safety: How to stay safe and the signs of heat stroke, exhaustion. What to know before Indy's heat wave Indiana law states that a person who forcibly enters a vehicle to remove a domestic animal is responsible for half of the cost of repairing the vehicle damage directly caused by the person's forcible entry if certain criteria aren't met. You have to reasonably believe that the dog is in imminent danger of dying or suffering serious harm, use no more force than needed and determine that the vehicle is indeed locked so forcible entry is necessary to remove the dog. You must also call 911, and remain with the dog until law enforcement or emergency responders arrive. Rescuers are, however, immune from all other civil or criminal liability for other property damage in this case. So the owner who left their pet in the vehicle can't sue or press charges against you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that bystanders not wait more than a few minutes for a driver to return to the car and to first assess if the child is responsive or unresponsive. You should call 911 right away and get the child out of the car if they appear to be unresponsive. Be sure to check for unlocked doors first. Once the child is freed from the vehicle, they may need to be sprayed or toweled off with cool water until emergency responders arrive. If a child is responsive, the NHTSA recommends staying with the child outside of the vehicle until law enforcement and or first responders arrive to locate the driver. Like with rescuing animals, a person who causes damage without following proper steps — calling 911, checking for unlocked doors, etc. — could be responsible for some of the repair cost.
