CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025: US ends 4-game losing streak with a 5-0 over Trinidad
Malik Tillman scored twice as the United States built a three-goal, first-half lead and ended a four-game losing streak by routing Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 on Sunday in a CONCACAF God Cup opener.
Tillman scored in the 16th and 41st minutes for his first two international goals, both following giveaways by Alvin Jones, and Patrick Agyemang scored his fourth international goal in the 44th.
Brenden Aaronson added his ninth goal in the 82nd and Haji Wright his fifth just 1 minute, 13 seconds later as the 16th-ranked Americans overwhelmed the No. 100 Soca Warriors and ended their longest losing streak since 2007.
Victory in the Group D opener came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic's desire to rest during the Gold Cup and coach Mauricio Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in.
The U.S. had 70.4 per cent possession and a 21-3 advantage in shots against the Soca Warriors, whose 2-1 home win against the Americans in 2017 ended a streak of seven straight World Cup appearances by the U.S.
The Americans have won their group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, along with a second-place finish behind Panama in 2011, and improved their group stage record to 41 wins, one loss and five draws. They play invited guest Saudi Arabia on Thursday at Austin, Texas, then close group play on June 22 against Haiti at Arlington, Texas.

Matt Freese was in goal in place Matt Turner, who had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 dating to the 2022 World Cup. The lone exception was a Gold Cup group stage game against St. Kitts and Nevis in 2023.
Missing Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest, the U.S. starting line-up averaged 14.8 international appearances. That was the second-fewest for the Americans in a Gold Cup opener behind 9.8 against Bermuda in 2009, according to Opta.
Adams (turf toe), Johnny Cardoso and Damion Downs (both illness) remained out of the matchday squad.
Defender Tim Ream started, extending his Gold Cup span for the U.S. to 14 years and surpassing DaMarcus Beasley (2002-15) for the American high.
Trinidad, coached by former star Dwight Yorke, has lost four of its last five games and has been outscored 46-0 in its last 13 games against the U.S. on American soil.
In the other Group D game, Saudi Arabia beat Haiti 1-0 at San Diego as Saleh Al-Shehri converted a 21st-minute penalty kick after Frantzdy Pierrot pulled him down by his jersey.

Seven Losses In A Row! Indian Men's Hockey Team's Bizarre Run Continues
Last Updated: The Indian men's hockey team lost 3-6 to Belgium in the FIH Pro League, marking their seventh consecutive defeat. The Indian men's hockey team's downward spiral in the European leg of the FIH Pro League continued with a 3-6 loss to Belgium, their seventh successive defeat, in their penultimate round game on Saturday, June 21, in Antwerp. Defender Arthur van Doren opened the scoring for world number three Belgium in the first minute from a PC, followed by Alexander Hendrickx making it 2-0 in the 28th minute with another PC conversion. Forward Dilpreet Singh reduced the deficit in the 36th minute, from a PC as well, and Mandeep Singh equalised in the 38th minute with a field goal. The Indian defence collapsed in the fourth and final quarter, permitting Belgium to score three field goals through Roman Duvekot, forward Thibeau Stockbroekx and van Doren, establishing a 5-2 lead. Defender Amit Rohidas pulled one back for India in the 56th minute via a PC, but Belgium sealed their win against India with a 59th-minute goal from Tom Boon, ending the game at 6-3. Despite earning more PCs, nine compared to Belgium's six, India's dream of bagging a direct berth to 2026's World Cup was shattered after a winless campaign in the European leg. India had suffered losses to the Netherlands, Argentina and Australia. They are eighth in the nine-team standings with 15 points, having bagged just five victories against a whopping 10 defeats. India will face Belgium again on Sunday, June 21, in their final round game. First Published: June 21, 2025, 21:32 IST

India's test against Belgium, as both men & women team take on hosts
Antwerp, June 20 (UNI) India's outing in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 hasn't gone as per the script. Finishing in top 3 and vying for a World Cup berth was on their minds when they left India for the European leg. After six straight loses, the Indian Men's Hockey Team will now take on their nemesis in modern hockey Belgium, who come into the game tomorrow with 6-3 win against Spain, after they lost 1-2 in the previous tie to the same team. They are currently placed third in the points table after the Netherlands and Australia respectively. Meanwhile, India have slipped to the 8th position in the current pool standings and with two matches to go, the team will look to end their campaign with consolation win. Putting things into perspective, Vice Skipper Hardik Singh said, "The results have not gone as planned and it's not that we have played badly. I think it hurts more when you play well but not convert that into desired result. This is something we will introspect on, but for now we are focused on the last two matches here. Belgium and India have always shared a healthy rivalry in recent times and both teams bring out the best in each other." "Our focus will be on finishing well, ensuring tighter defence and creating chances to score," he added. Meanwhile, the women's team will take on the hosts in Antwerp hoping to turn the tide against world no.3 Belgium. Speaking about the upcoming game, Women's Captain Salima Tete expressed, "While we had two close matches against Australia and took Argentina to a penalty shootout in our last match, it was our 1-4 loss against Argentina in the previous match that gave us most insight into where we need to strengthen our game further and that is what we worked upon in our last match and take forward for our match against Belgium." "Last year, during our previous encounter against the Belgium Team, we didn't give them any easy wins, and we're now taking our learnings from those matches and our recent encounters against Australia and Argentina to go all out against them again and hopefully win," she said. The Indian Men's and Women's Team will take on Belgium in a double-header on June 21 and 22. All the FIH Pro League 2024-25 (Men) matches will be streamed live on Jio Hotstar and broadcast on Star Sports Select. UNI BM

Hans Niemann all set to play rival Magnus Carlsen at Las Vegas Freestyle event: 'See you...'
Hans Niemann has confirmed his participation in the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tournament, setting up a possible clash with rival Magnus Carlsen. The tournament will mark their first potential face-off since the 2022 controversy that resulted in a $100 million lawsuit. read more American Grandmaster Hans Niemann has confirmed his participation in the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tournament, which is set to take place from 16 to 20 July. Neimann will go head-to-head with some of the world's best and might as well face his long-time rival Magnus Carlsen . Niemann qualified for the Las Vegas event after a string of impressive wins in the qualifier on He beat Germany's Rasmus Svane, China's Yu Yangyi, former world champion Ding Liren, and Denis Lazavik to book his spot. His victories over Yu and Lazavik came on the same day he celebrated his 22nd birthday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After the qualification, Niemann took to his social media handle, where he posted, 'SEE YOU ALL IN LAS VEGAS!!!!' SEE YOU ALL IN LAS VEGAS!!!! — Hans Niemann (@HansMokeNiemann) June 20, 2025 Hoping that all of my most important future tournaments end on on my birthday. Winning is simply inevitable! — Hans Niemann (@HansMokeNiemann) June 21, 2025 Niemann's qualification is highly anticipated because of his history with Carlsen, who is also the co-founder of the Freestyle Tour. Carlsen has accused Neimann of cheating on several occasions, including in 2022 when the five-time world champion withdrew from a tournament following his loss to the American GM. The incident led to a $100 million lawsuit, which was later settled with no evidence found against Niemann. This will also mark the first time Niemann and Carlsen will play each other again in a high-profile event since that controversy. Meanwhile, Carlsen recently achieved a 2900 rating in the new Freestyle rankings announced by the organisers. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Why did Neimann pull out of previous Freestyle event? Niemann had earlier qualified for the Paris leg of the Freestyle Chess Tour but pulled out at the last minute, citing personal reasons. His withdrawal sparked rumours linking his decision to strict anti-cheating measures taken in Paris. Niemann later slammed these claims and said he withdrew due to personal reasons. 'I withdrew from the tournament strictly for personal reasons that I prefer not to disclose publicly right now. What's been particularly disappointing is witnessing how quickly some people jumped on this moment to perpetuate three years of baseless accusations against me. I genuinely wonder when they'll finally accept reality,' Neimann said. 'I didn't immediately issue a public statement because, frankly, I was deeply frustrated by the organizers' and TV2's absurd speculation suggesting my decision was linked to what they dramatically called 'new, advanced anti-cheating measures.' The article falsely claimed that the last message I received referenced 'enhanced measures'. To be absolutely clear—this is completely false. Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects within the chess mafia eagerly amplified this ridiculous narrative. At the time, I believed publicly responding would only legitimize accusations that have no basis in reality,' he added.
