Proteas coach Shukri Conrad delivers perfect Lord's Father's Day present with Aussie victory

LONDON: As the most poignant juncture in South Africa's cricket history drew closer and the emotions were running at an all-time high, Shukri Conrad took a step back for a moment of reflection.
It's been just two months since Conrad's father, Sedick - one the finest cricketers of his generation - passed on. 'Ta Dickie', as he was affectionately known, was Conrad's biggest supporter, and, of course, also his biggest critic.
He was immensely proud when his son, Shukri, was appointed Proteas coach and of the hot streak they had enjoyed in qualifying for the World Test Championship Final at Lord's.
He would undoubtedly have been smiling down from the heavens above on the most glorious of Saturdays at Lord's when Temba Bavuma lifted the ICC golden mace after beating the arch-enemy Australia to be crowned world champions.

'With two runs to go I remember the old man saying to me: 'I just want to see you beat Australia one day,' Conrad said after the five-wicket victory that set off immense celebrations both in London and back home in South Africa.
This Proteas Test side have certainly been challenged both on and off the field during this past WTC cycle. It was not only Conrad's father that had passed, but batting coach Ashwell Prince's wife Melissa lost her battle with cancer on the eve of the New Year Test at Newlands.
Many of the players attended the funeral in support of the Prince family, and it is due to such humbling events that has caused this Proteas group to form a special bond that has managed to get them through the toughest times on the park - like when they faced a deficit of 74 runs on the first innings at Lord's before ultimately triumphing by five wickets.
'It's not something we try and do but all of these things happen organically you know,' Conrad said.
'It's not something that we reference in a team chat or in a team huddle but the guys just naturally would reach out to either me or Ash to have a gesture of some sort.'
All of these events have made the taste of success even sweeter with Conrad ecstatic for a group of players that many had not given a chance prior to coming to Lord's.
'When Scholesey (Kyle Verryenne) smacked that one it was just like an outpour of emotion,' he said.
'Everyone is thrilled for these guys, so happy for them and then something we never talk about, we never talk about what it means to the country but today we can talk about that, I mean this means a hell of a lot to the country.
'I mean it's the most amazing feeling, obviously a lot of teams in different formats have got close and not got over the line. I think in some perverse sort of way, guys like Aiden and Temba having experience the heartache and yeah the trauma of not getting over the line, they become more experienced at handling pressure situations like this.

Matthew Breetzke Conrad gambled on allrounder Wiaan Mulder at No 3 in the WTC Final, and while Mulder showed great temperament in the second innings at Lord's to build a partnership with centurion Aiden Markram, it is unlikely that 'Wessie' is the long-term solution at first-drop. In the absence of Markram, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, Breetzke has the ideal opportunity to stake a claim for a spot in the top-order. He will be keen to show he is a better player than the duck he scored on Test debut in Bangladesh.

A change in strategy by the West Indies, who opted to go for the slow and wide route, may have been too much for his ladies to acquaint themselves with, putting up just 113 runs in 20 overs. The Proteas Women could not string together a solid partnership in the top, middle or lower order and didn't see any standout batting performances - which have generally put up by Tazmin Brits during this tour. They found their line and length with the ball though, squeezing the hosts right down to the last over, earning Mashimbiyi's adulation. With just a 24-hour turn around before the third and final T20I on Monday night, Mashimbiyi said he's only taking away positives going into tonight's match with confidence. 'We just didn't score enough runs. We did not adapt well to the conditions. We came in with a lot of confidence based on how we played the last game, but I think the conditions played a big role and we just didn't adapt well enough to make sure we get a score that will be competitive. 'However, the way the bowlers went about their business to take it to the last over is a big positive for us. There is a lot of learning for us to take away in terms of adjusting our targets based on the conditions and I think we couldn't do that today. We didn't put any partnerships together…but come tomorrow, (Monday) we will be a different outfit,' Mashimbiyi said after the match. The West Indies mainly threw spin at the Proteas, which made it difficult to reach the boundary and it showed. A single six was hit during the Proteas innings along with 4 four's. Mashimbiyi said this was surprising because they've 'been playing spin well recently'. Brits and the captain Laura Wolvaardt could not really get the team going this time around, and saw a quick flurry of wickets fall after them. Mashimbiyi was not too phased at it, saying he was confident in the depth they have down the order. 'The lovely thing about this team is we know that we have a bit of depth from a batting point of view. Players down the batting order have come on and put us in good positions. So, if they (top order) fail then that's it, the other people need to come in and score the runs. But again, the nice thing is that a lot of players are putting their hands up, but I guess it just wasn't our day,' the Proteas Women coach said.

Yet Juventus were well on top and Cambiaso hit the post just prior to the hour mark before Randal Kolo Muani somehow failed to turn in Lloyd Kelly's ball across the face of goal. Their third goal did arrive just after the midway point in the second half when France forward Kolo Muani collected possession on the left and then slipped in Yildiz who finished into the corner.
