Absences can't stop University's winning ways

Despite missing key players and their head coach, the University of Canterbury continues to find ways to win in the Metro rugby competition.
They defeated Lincoln University 52-17 on Saturday, even with three players away on New Zealand under-20 duty and head coach Daniel O'Brien in Thailand for his sister's wedding.
Lock Jake Frost also suffered a broken arm during the match and will miss most of the season.
Adding to the uncertainty, captain and first-five James White could be called into the Crusaders squad following Taha Kemara's injury.
Halfback and backs coach Jared Mitchell, who stepped in as head coach, said the match was tougher than the score suggested.
'We only had 39% possession and territory and managed to score 50 points, so that's always a good thing,' he said.
The win also saw University reclaim the Hart-O'Reilly Trophy, contested between the two varsity teams, after losing it 31-26 to Lincoln last season.
University will face Sydenham this weekend, with O'Brien back in charge – though several key players will still be sidelined.
Mitchell is expecting a tough contest.
'I would expect them to be much the same as they have been. They always have a good pack and they try and rumble you around. They've had some pretty exciting outsides as well, so they can hit you from anywhere.'
Elsewhere, Linwood held onto the DCL Shield after a 36-29 win over Shirley. They will defend it again this weekend against New Brighton, who are tied with University on competition points but trail on points difference.
Lincoln University will aim to bounce back against Belfast, who impressed despite a 42-29 loss to Burnside. Shirley meet Burnside, HSOB face Marist Albion and Christchurch host Sumner with all matches taking place on Saturday.

University 15; New Brighton 15; HSOB 12; Marist Albion 10; Burnside 10; Linwood 9; Sydenham 7; Christchurch 6; Belfast 6; Lincoln Uni 5; Sumner 2; Shirley 2

Call-up for Manu Samoa sees another code switch for Lam
Joel Lam has returned to play for Burnside ahead of linking up with the Manu Samoa squad. Lam switched to rugby league earlier this year, playing twice for Hornby Panthers before a move to Australia. PHOTO: SIDELINE PHOTOGRAPHS Rugby league convert Joel Lam has made a surprise pivot back to union after being named in the Manu Samoa squad to play Scotland next month. The 23-year-old, who previously made eight appearances for Canterbury and one for the Crusaders, switched codes earlier this year to chase a rugby league career. He featured twice for the Hornby Panthers in the CRL Premiership before heading to Australia in April to join Brisbane club Souths Logan Magpies. However, last week Lam was named among 11 uncapped players in the Manu Samoa squad for their match against Scotland at Eden Park on July 18, as well as August's Pacific Nations Cup. The halfback qualifies for Samoa through his maternal grandfather William Lam, who was born in the island nation. 'I've always had the dream to represent Samoa and play for my granddad. He passed away when I was in high school, but he'll be smiling up there, that's for sure,' he said. Lam is related to Samoan international Ben Lam, his brother, Blues midfielder AJ Lam, and their uncle Pat Lam. Joel Lam playing for Burnside ahead of linking up with the Manu Samoa squad. PHOTO: SIDELINE PHOTOGRAPHS Pat Lam played 34 times for Samoa in the 1990s and also coached the Blues from 2009-12. 'We've got 300-plus cousins, uncles and aunties. The Lam family's pretty big over in Samoa, so we're related somewhere down the line,' he said. 'My granddad's one of 21 siblings, and obviously those brothers and sisters have all had children of their own, then those children have had daughters and sons, so we're all related.' Lam marked his return to union on Saturday, coming off the bench to score a try for Burnside in their 64–35 Metro Premier win over Christchurch. He will continue playing for the club until he links up with the Samoa squad on July 9. Lam said despite his switch back to the 15-man game he was still keeping his sporting options open. 'You want to take every opportunity, and I went and gave (league) a crack and there's nothing saying that door's closed either.'

Wānaka win as Plimmer scores two on the road
Photo: file Alex Plimmer came off the bench to score twice and propel Wānaka to a win on the road. It took them to a 2-1 victory over Universites of Canterbury at English Park, in the men's Southern Football League on Saturday. Plimmer gave Wānaka a 42nd-minute lead when they played the ball out from their penalty box. A long ball forward saw Wānaka press the home team — forcing a turnover with Plimmer collecting the loose ball on the edge of the box. He took one touch and gave keeper Matthew Aitchison no chance. Wānaka nearly doubled their lead just after the hour mark, when Ed Belingher broke free in his own half and collected Plimmer's return pass with his shot striking the post. It was 2-0 a couple of minutes later when Ben Sippola showed some tidy footwork to beat six players as he dribbled into the box. He was finally tackled, but the ball fell kindly to Plimmer, who rifled his shot home from 12 yards out. UC pulled one back with eight minutes to go through Ashton Lay, but Wānaka held on to claim three points and the double over UC. It was the only game involving a southern team on Saturday as fog at Dunedin Airport prevented teams from flying to their games. That impacted both the men's and women's Dunedin City Royals teams, as well as the Roslyn Wakari women's team. Yesterday's women's Southern League game between Otago University and Cashmere Technical was also postponed due to a flight cancellation. Christchurch United remain in top spot of the men's league, thanks to Travis Graham's injury time goal in the 92nd minute to secure a 1-1 draw with Nomads. Cashmere Tech moved into third spot with a routine 6-0 victory over Selwyn and Ferrymead Bays are fourth thanks to goalkeeper Evan Ovendale's late penalty save after Liam Stanton's 54th minute goal in a close 1-0 win over Nelson Suburbs. In the men's Southern Premiership, Northern completed the first round with 100% record after a closely-fought 2-1 victory over their nearest challengers University. Northern's strike force of Rory Hibbert and Toby Orchiston were combining well, as were the students pairing of Ashton Hodson and Simba Muwunganirwa, testing the keepers with some early shots. The game burst into life in the 42nd minute, and Hodson finished on a diving header a few minutes later to finish past Eli Urwin — his third attempt after Urwin had denied Hodson twice. However, with time up on the clock a slip in the University defence left space for the ball to be played across the Orchiston. He tapped in from close range to make it 1-1 at halftime. The second half was a tight affair, before the game burst into life again late in the half. Urwin reacted well to deny University the lead in the 86th minute, before Hibbert finished at the other end a minute later, allowing Northern to escape with the win. Mosgiel moved into second with a 5-2 comeback win over Northern Hearts, while Roslyn Wakari beat Old Boys 4-2 at Ellis Park, also coming from behind. The Dunedin City Royals were too strong for Green Island in a 4-0 win. By Neville Watson

Southern United snatch shield in upset win
Southern United claimed the Challenge Shield with victory over Marist on Saturday night. Photo: Supplied Southern United will have one week to enjoy their Challenge Shield triumph before putting it on the line for the first time. The Stingers, currently sixth on the table but riding a three-game winning streak, pulled off a major upset on Saturday, beating previously unbeaten league leaders and former shield holders Marist 1-0 at Marist Park. Cameron Douglas's third-quarter goal and outstanding performances from goalkeeper Gareth Stewart and man-of-the-match Isaac Brydon saw them claim victory and take the shield off their opponents. It marks the first time Southern have held the prestigious shield since 2020. Southern centurion Ben Owers said he was 'stoked' to have the shield back with the club. 'We have a large number of new players with most of them unaware of the shield's history and importance,' he said. 'It was great to see us put in such a good performance against the competition leaders.' Second-place HSOB/Burnside was also upset 5-2 by Avon, while Carlton Redcliffs beat Hornby 2-1 and Harewood thrashed University 12-0. In the women's competition, Harewood retained the Challenge Shield and stayed top of the table thanks to a 9-0 win over University, while HSOB/Burnside (7-1 v Avon), Marist (6-0 v Southern), and Hornby (1-0 v Carlton Redcliffs) had wins. The competitions take a break this weekend due to Matariki.
