'Boys saying they've never won for Wales hurts'

BBC News6 hours ago

Wing Josh Adams says it hurts that some of his Wales team-mates having not experienced an international victory. The national men's side are on a record 17-match Test losing sequence as they prepare for a two match tour of Japan in July. Wales have slipped to a new low of 12th place in the world rankings with the previous international win against Georgia in October 2023.In contrast, Adams was part of a Wales side that won a record 14 games and reached number one in the world in August 2019."It hurts me when some boys say they've never won for Wales," said Adams."It's horrible when they say things like that because of the things I've experienced. "I didn't know how to lose at one stage for Wales. Even when we weren't playing well we managed to win."
'There will be a tipping point'
Adams, 30, is confident Wales can halt the losing streak. "We probably have just got a little bit lost and are trying to find our way back now," said Adams."That'll come because the talent is there. I know I see it every day, these boys are as good as what we've had and are good enough to produce and win."It's just confidence is a huge thing."The British and Irish Lions wing says the desire and commitment is there to change Wales' fortunes."It is horrible to question that, although I know it can be questioned when you are looking in because of the results and magnitude of some of them," said Adams. "That hurts the playing group. They have lost and lost badly on occasions, but it doesn't affect the amount of effort that goes in. That can never be questioned. "There will be a tipping point. We all believe that and hope it will be this summer. "Adams says the squad have spoken about the situation they are in."It's something we have addressed because there is no point in not talking about things," said Adams."The more open and vulnerable we can make each other as players in speaking about different aspects of the game and life, the easier it becomes to talk about difficult things."
Changes to Wales working week
Former head coach Warren Gatland left in February during the Six Nations with his permanent successor yet to be appointed.Adams is hoping Wales will benefit in Japan from the new-look coaching team that is led again by caretaker boss Matt Sherratt and includes backroom staff Danny Wilson, Gethin Jenkins, Adam Jones, Rhys Thomas and Leigh Halfpenny. "It has been brilliant and exactly what the squad needed with a new way of looking at the schedule," said Adams."Meeting times have changed, how we do weights and at what time. Everything feels new, which is a good thing because it has freshened things up."The addition of Danny and Gethin for the summer is brilliant."
Return to Japan
Adams has fond memories of Japan having been the World Cup's top try-scorer with seven when Wales reached the semi-finals in 2019.Six years on, he is only one of four survivors from that squad alongside Elliot Dee, Nicky Smith and Aaron Wainwright. In an inexperienced squad heading to Japan, Adams is the most capped back with 61 Wales internationals, with only Test centurion Taulupe Faletau boasting more appearances.Cardiff wing Adams is back fit after missing the final three Six Nations defeats because of a hamstring injury."I got back for the last six games of the season," said Adams. "That meant I had probably the longest consecutive run of matches I've had in at least a season and a half and I'm feeling good at the minute."
Being pushed to the limit
The new-look squad have spent the past few weeks attempting to acclimatise to the searing heat and humidity expected in Kitakyushu and Kobe.Japan coach Eddie Jones has stated he wants to run Wales around in matches that will be played in the afternoon.Wales have replicated the tactics sides adopted in the 2019 World Cup by training with wet balls to become used to the greasy conditions. They have also had intense gym sessions in a heat chamber at Wales' training base where temperatures are ramped up to 36 degrees and 87% humidity.Adams has experienced previous brutal fitness sessions with Wales in Switzerland and Turkey and rates the latest conditions as some of the toughest he has experienced."Some boys were saying 'that's the hardest thing I've ever done' and it's got to be in the top three worst I've felt after a session," said Adams."It was really bad, genuine, because it's so stuffy."There's certain times and calories you've got to do, but you're all crammed in there, so it's uncomfortable when you're knackered."You want a bit of space just to breathe, but you can't because it's so hot and stuffy and everyone's rubbing against each other. You're trying to not agitate each other because it's so cramped."But the boys have managed pretty well, no one's tapped out yet, so we're doing alright."
Replenishing fluids
The gruelling conditions led to some players losing up to 5kg in one session. "We're weighing in before and after, we take one bottle of water which is rationed for the whole session," said Adams."Not because they want to be horrible, but it gives them a better gauge of how much fluids we lose and it's a considerable amount of weight. "There's a lot of fluid then you've got to drink to get your body back to some sort of base level."Adams says one of the worst parts is "cooling down as you let your body regulate the temperature"."They don't want us hopping in ice baths because you can't do that in the game," said Adams."It's trying to get your body to regulate this body temperature and back to normal."We have done these off-field conditioning sessions and then come straight down and got into some skills."It's trying to copy what the climate would be like out there as best we can and make it as comfortable as it can, so we're in a good space to cope with anything."

Santi Cazorla scores in playoff as Real Oviedo end 24-year wait for La Liga return

Real Oviedo sealed their return to La Liga after 24 years with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Mirandés – and 40-year-old Santi Cazorla was among the scorers. Oviedo triumphed 3-1 at home in Saturday's promotion playoff, overturning a first-leg deficit with goals from Cazorla, Ilyas Chaira and Francisco Portillo. A packed Estadio Carlos Tartiere erupted as fans stormed the pitch at the final whistle. Cazorla started his career in Oviedo's youth team, joining at the age of eight and watching his heroes: Carlos Munoz, Slavisa Jokanovic, Robert Prosinecki and Petr Dubovsky. A decade later he had to leave against his will amid a financial crisis at the club. He went on to star with Villarreal, Arsenal and Spain but returned to his boyhood club two years ago, vowing: 'I would play for free but you're not allowed.' He scored the decisive goal in the playoff semi-final against Almería from a free-kick and has now completed the fairytale by firing his boyhood club back into the big time. Cazorla scored from the penalty spot in the first half of the second leg after Joaquin Panichelli's goal had given Mirandés a two-goal lead in the two-legged affair. Chair's second-half strike took the tie to extra time and two minutes before the break in the extra half an hour, Portillo hit the winner to send the home fans wild. The club from Asturias, in the north-west of Spain, will join Levante and Elche in next season's top tier, replacing relegated Leganés, Las Palmas and Valladolid. Oviedo's coach, Veljko Paunovic, told La Liga TV: 'There's no way to describe what this means to us. These players are heroes, every single one of them. They deserve great recognition.' HUGE football star and manager 'to star on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing'

Football icon Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is reportedly set to appear on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing. The former Chelsea and Netherlands striker and ex-England coach, 53, is believed to have signed up to the BBC flagship show, according to The Sun. A source told the publication: 'Jimmy has a huge fanbase from his years playing in the Premier League and is a very likeable character. 'Show producers are always keen to book a retired footballer as it gets footie fans tuning into the series and becoming unlikely fans of the show. 'Jimmy has a competitive edge and is going to get his head in the game.' The father-of-four was a professional player with Leeds and Middlebrough for two decades before he retied in 2008. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Strictly Come Dancing for comment. The rumour comes weeks after Strictly bosses announced the professional lineup for this year's show and revealed there will be two brand new dancers joining. Dianne Buswell, who lifted the glitter ball in December with Chris McCausland, will be joining Nadiya Bychkova, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk and Jowita Przystal in returning to the dance floor this September. They will be joined by Johannes Radebe, Aljaž Škorjanec, Nancy Xu, Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas and Vito Coppola who will all take to the floor once more alongside two new stars, who will be announced closer to the time. Amy Dowden, who pulled out in the opening weeks of last year's show due to a foot injury, will also be back on Strictly for 2025, as will Carlos Gu and Kai Widdrington, who didn't have a celebrity partner last year. Despite rumours that he might be making a return after missing out on last year's series, Giovanni Pernice will not be heading back to the ballroom this time around. Sarah James, Executive Producer, BBC Studios said : 'The excitement is already building ahead of the new series and in addition to welcoming back our fantastic returning Pros, we are looking forward to welcoming two brand new Professional Dancers to the line up who will help bring another unforgettable series of dazzling dance and loads more besides to viewers later in 2025.' As well as the pros taking part in the competition itself, all of them will be taking to the floor each week in group routines. The rumour comes weeks after Strictly bosses announced the professional lineup for this year's show and revealed there will be two brand new dancers joining MailOnline previously revealed that Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen will return to the BBC show this year. It was rumoured that the programme's longest-serving dancer was axed by bosses, sparking an 'ageism' row among the cast but it has been confirmed that the star, 42, will be back as normal when the series returns in September. Karen, who joined the lineup in 2012, is yet to win the glitter ball trophy but has reached several finals including with celebrity partners Made In Chelsea 's Jamie Laing and former TOWIE star Mark Wright. Last year, Karen was partnered with former footballer Paul Merson, 57, but the pair were eliminated in week five and the previous season the dancer performed with DJ Eddie Kadi. The Venezuelan, who was previously married to ex-pro Kevin Clifton, returns to the show alongside the likes of Strictly favourites Gorka Marquez, Johannes Radebe, and Jowita Przystal, who reached the semifinal stages last year with Pete Wicks. In November, it was reported that Karen was at 'risk' of losing her place on the show because of her age when dancers like Dianne Buswell, 35, and Michelle Tsiakkas, 29, are younger participants. Meanwhile, Carlos Gu (pictured, left) and Kai Widdrington (right) will be returning after not appearing in the 2024 edition Johannes Radebe (pictured, left) is back for the 2025 edition after receiving a huge spike in popularity, leading to a busy diary and will join Aljaž Škorjanec (right) Katya Jones (pictured, left) will be joining Jowita Pryzstal (right) on the much-awaited return of Strictly this September A TV source told MailOnline: 'Karen is a well loved and respected member of the Strictly cast and there's no way she would be axed, especially not because of her age. 'She has dedicated years to the programme and can't wait to get back in the training room with a new partner in the next coming months.' Following speculation surrounding whether she would axed from the long running series due to being in her 40s, Karen spoke about not being 'threatened' by younger competitors. Indeed, she said performing alongside new joiners makes her feel empowered and she is 'inspired' by the younger generation. In February, she said: 'Of course, Strictly brings in younger female dancers. I'm the longest serving on the show, but new dancers don't threaten me - I watch them and I learn from them. 'They inspire me and build my confidence. I've become the person for them that I didn't have when I joined the show. I'm always there to help because there is a big spotlight on you on Strictly.' As well as competing on the show with celebrity contestants Jeremy Vine, Simon Rimmer, Greg Wise and Chris Ramsey, Karen also danced with comedian Jayde Adams, which was her first female partnership. On competing with a female for the first time in 2022, Karen said: 'I've danced with a lot of male dancers, but it's finding what works for them. This is more natural. Luba Mushtuk (pictured, left) was partnered with Nick Knowles in 2024 while Nancy Xu (right) danced with singer Shayne Ward last year Lauren Oakley (pictured, left) stepped in for Amy as JB Gill's partner and Michelle Tsiakkas (right) was with Jamie Borthwick last time 'It is female empowerment for me to be dancing with Jayde. I feel the most comfortable because there is that friendship. 'We are girls and we talk about everything. We cry together, we laugh together. We share so many things. 'When it comes to the dancing we are able to put that emotion into it.' It was alleged last year that a Strictly 'cull' of the professional dancers would see a change in the lineup, with Gorka rumoured not to be coming back for the upcoming season. Throughout his time on the show Gorka has been partnered with the likes of EastEnders actress Tameka Empson, Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn, and radio host Nikita Kanda. In 2024, he competed with Morning Live doctor Punam Krishan and the pair impressed the judging panel with their Couples' Choice performance where they danced a Bollywood routine. His partner Gemma Atkinson starred on Strictly in 2017, which is how the couple first met, and the fitness model reached the final, narrowly missing out to Joe McFadden and his partner Katya for the glitter ball trophy. It was alleged last year that a Strictly 'cull' of the professional dancers would see a change in the lineup, with Gorka Marquez rumoured not to be coming back for the upcoming season The World Latin Champion, who started dancing at the age of 12, landed a new role earlier this year on the judging panel for the Spanish version of Strictly. He's also been up and down the country performing with fellow pro dancer Karen on their Speakeasy tour. Gemma has admitted the time she finds most difficult as a mother is when Gorka is rehearsing for Strictly, saying his intense work schedule means he often isn't at their family home in Manchester. She said: 'He's never here. It's Strictly from July to December. If they get a partner, they're based where their partner is in the week. Obviously London at the weekend.' In recent years, the Strictly pro lineup has seen Italian dancers Graziano Di Prima and Giovanni be axed following complaints about their conduct in the training room. Giovanni faced bullying accusations from former celebrity partner Amanda Abbington while Graziano 'kicked' ex-Love Island star Zara McDermott during rehearsals. There were also reports of a 'mass cull' with producers keen to revamp the Strictly pro cast.

Pep Guardiola admits Man City will actively trim squad size ahead of Premier League season amid interest in two key players

Pep Guardiola has predicted that Manchester City will actively trim their squad down before the start of the Premier League season. City took 24 outfield players and three goalkeepers to the Club World Cup in America and face Al Ain in the second group game looking to secure qualification in the early hours of Monday morning. Ilkay Gundogan is wanted by Galatasaray, while the injured Mateo Kovacic has had suitors. Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker are not part of the travelling party but are to be moved on. Guardiola claimed earlier in the year that he will need a larger squad in future after being rocked by a steady stream of injuries through the last campaign. But after making eight signings since January, he is also mindful that City cannot keep everybody happy if the size of the group remains the same. Guardiola has typically operated with around 20 outfield players during his time at the Etihad Stadium. 'No news, good news,' Guardiola said when asked about Gundogan's future. 'I don't know anything, I didn't speak with him, and if he will not be part he would not be here. 'But at the same time, we have - right now - a long squad, too many players, so we cannot go with 26, 27 players this season because there would be more without playing, and step by step maybe a few players are going to more.' Guardiola confirmed that Rodri is not yet ready to start a game despite featuring for half an hour during the 2-0 win over Wydad AC. The Catalan talked up the impact the South American teams have had on the competition, not closing the door on potentially managing on that continent in the future, before a potential banana skin against Al Ain, owned by the brother of Sheikh Mansour. 'I feel it's a privilege to be here,' he added. 'This is a privilege because in four years time (we might not qualify). Four years to be there you have to win big prizes. 'We have a lot of respect for Al Ain, for the connection to our owners being from Abu Dhabi, and of course we have a huge opportunity to go to the next round and we'll see. Many things can happen, and we're going to take it seriously.'
