Vondrousova beats Chinese qualifier Wang to win Berlin Open

BERLIN (AP) — Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova put months of injuries behind her to beat Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu 7-6 (10), 4-6, 6-2 and win the Berlin Open on Sunday.
For the 25-year-old Vondrousova, who had dropped to 164 in the rankings after undergoing surgery on her left shoulder, it's her first title in her first final since winning Wimbledon in 2023.
'We were all working really hard to get me back and I felt like, you know, we came here to try to win the first match and now this is happening. So I'm just very grateful to be standing here and very grateful for you guys,' Vondrousova told her team.
Vondrousova defeated top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals to reach the showdown with Wang, who was playing her seventh match in nine days after coming through the qualifiers.
The 23-year-old Wang defeated former champion Liudmila Samsonova in the semifinals to reach her first final. Earlier, she ousted Daria Kasatkina, Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa after qualifying.
'It's been an unbelievable week for us. And I just, we keep on building and looking forward for the next one,' said Wang, who only had 10 wins this year before appearing at the grass-court tournament.

Hovland was among three players to withdraw from the PGA Tour's signature event. Eric Cole, who was tied for 14th, pulled out before the round started with an illness. Matti Schmid withdrew after playing four holes. Hovland said he felt great while warming up until deciding to hit a couple of drives and then he felt something in his neck. 'It felt fine, didn't feel hardly anything at all, just felt like something was maybe brewing,' Hovland said. 'Then the next shot that I hit with a driver it just felt like ... it just cracked. I don't know exactly what happened, but there's something that happened and just couldn't move.' Hovland said he could barely stand over the ball and move his neck when he withdrew. The Czech, who won Wimbledon in 2023, was pushed hard by Wang, appearing in her first final, but eventually emerged the 7-6 (12/10), 4-6, 6-2 winner. The 25-year-old, finalist at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, has tumbled down the world rankings to 164 from sixth after months away from the court with a left shoulder injury for which she underwent surgery last year. "We've all worked hard for me to come back," said Vondrousova, acknowledging the hard work she and her team have put in to get her back firing on all cylinders. Wang broke Vondrousova twice to lead 6-5 in the first set only for the Czech to level at 6-6, taking the tie break 12/10 after saving six set points. "We came here hoping to win the first match and here I am. I'm so grateful," smiled Vondrousova. This was her first title match since she defeated Ons Jabeur in straight sets at Wimbledon two years ago. Immediate reward for the win will come on Monday when she shoots up inside the top 100 to 73 in the latest WTA world order. Sunday's success was the icing on the cake for Vondrousova who stunned world number one and three-time Grand slam winner Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final. Reds set to call up top pitching prospect Chase Burns from minors to start against Yanks
Associated Press ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds are preparing to call up top pitching prospect Chase Burns to start during their series against the New York Yankees this week. Burns, a 22-year-old right-hander, has rapidly moved through the minor leagues after Cincinnati drafted him with the No. 2 pick last year from Wake Forest. Burns is 7-3 with a 1.77 ERA in 13 starts at three minor-league levels this year, including two with Triple-A Louisville. 'It's kind of hard to come up with a reason why we shouldn't,' Reds manager Terry Francona said Sunday. 'They tried to throw a lot at him. He just kind of handled everything. The Reds' rotation is short-handed after starters Hunter Greene and Wade Miley went on the injured list earlier this month.
