Chart-topping rock band sparks major backlash after waving Palestinian flag on stage

Daily Mail01-06-2025

Imagine Dragons is facing major backlash after frontman Dan Reynolds triumphantly waved a Palestinian flag on stage during a recent concert in Milan.
The American rock band - known for hits like 'Radioactive' and 'Demons' - was performing at the I-Days Festival when Reynolds held the flag aloft and draped it over his shoulders before kissing it before tossing it into the crowd.
The moment quickly went viral, sparking immediate outrage and igniting a storm of condemnation on social media.
'Disgusting and shameful,' wrote one user on X, formerly Twitter.
'It looks like the band "Imagine Dragons" supports terrorism,' said ACT for America Chairman Brigitte Gabriel.
'Imagine Dragons ends their concert by waving their solidarity with TERRORISTS. They're calling for " gay rights" and "free Palestine."' another user wrote.
'Essentially, they just called for the deaths of all gay people - and their music career.'
Many accused the band of politicizing a music event and showing bias in the ongoing and deeply contentious Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
'Disgusting. Why can't performers just stick to performing?' one person asked.
'Politics and music have no place together,' another commented.
'Musicians should stick to their music. Mixing politics with music is unnecessary,' wrote another user on X.
Critics also pointed to the band's past controversies.
In 2023, Imagine Dragons faced criticism for performing in Israel and Azerbaijan, in August 2023, before the October 7 Hamas terror attacks.
Reynolds later defended the band's decisions, saying he didn't want to punish fans for the actions of governments.
'I don't believe in depriving our fans who want to see us play because of the acts of their leaders and their governments. I think that's a really slippery slope,' Reynolds told Rolling Stone in July 2024.
'I think the second you start to do that, there's corrupt leaders and warmongers all over the world, and where do you draw the line?'
Now, critics argue the Milan gesture contradicts that stance.
'He said he doesn't play politics with fans -but that flag is politics,' one commenter posted.
Others demanded an apology, with some threatening to boycott future concerts or delete the band's music.
'I deleted their entire library today. Even some collabs with other artists,' one user wrote.
'This will hopefully lead to a serious fan base cut,' commented another.
Still, not all the response was negative, pro-Palestinian advocates and many international fans praised the act as a show of solidarity amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Imagine Dragons was 'applauded worldwide' for the gesture, with some calling it 'one of the bravest acts by a mainstream artist,' the Daily Times reported.
'You just gained a lifelong fan,' one supporter commented.
Another added, 'They stood up for human rights when others stayed silent.'
Bassist Ben McKee also used the stage to promote LGBTQ+ causes, playing a guitar painted with the transgender pride flag and a heart in the style of the gay pride flag on its back, video showed.
As of now, neither Reynolds nor the band has issued a formal statement on the controversy.

Princess Andre reveals emotional dad Peter has been left 'sobbing' by her upcoming 18th birthday as she breaks her silence on split from boyfriend ahead of marking the milestone

Princess Andre has revealed her upcoming 18th birthday has left dad Peter 'sobbing' as he struggles to come to terms with her 'growing up'. The daughter of the singer and Katie Price, who celebrates the milestone June 29, has also broken her silence on her recent split from her unnamed boyfriend following two years of dating. She told The Sun: '[My Dad] so proud and so supportive, but I think it's hard to see your kid get older, he was the first person I took for a drive in the new car'. Last month Princess was forced to hit back at fans who accused her of not buying new £10k car herself, after shared snaps of her new white Audi A1 to Instagram. 'We were listening to music and suddenly I heard him sobbing. I was like: "Are you OK?" And he admitted it was hard for him to see me grow up'. Moving onto her personal life she said: 'I'm feeling good. I've always kept my personal life personal, so I don't talk too much about it, but now is the time to focus on me, I want to get my career to exactly where I want it.' Despite now being of legal age to drink, the influencer said she had no plans for wild nights on the town but would be opting instead for quiet visits to the pub with pals. Peter, 52, previously shared fears his daughter was growing up too fast but said he was starting to 'loosen the reigns' as she got older. He told to The Sun: 'It's hard because you're so strict as a parent, but as time goes on you start letting the reigns go a little bit. You don't want to let them go too much too quick.' He also explained that the likelihood of the teen doing a reality show like Love Island was definitely off the cards, but he may not have as much say as time goes on. 'I don't even know the words Love Island. Those two words don't go together in my house,' he jested. Last month it was reported that Princess had split from her boyfriend after her busy career left 'no place for a man', just a year after declaring that she was 'in love'. According to reports Princess, who kept much of her relationship out of the public eye, will be doing the same with the 'tough' break up. The teen first went public with their romance when she invited him along to her mother Katie's 45th birthday celebrations in Brighton in May 2023. Last month it was reported that Princess had split from her boyfriend after her busy career left 'no place for a man', just a year after declaring that she was 'in love' Katie then appeared on Jamie Laing's Private Parts podcast, where she opened up on her thoughts about the romance. Discussing her Christmas plans at the time, she revealed: 'Princess and her boyfriend are coming up with me for the weekend.' Jamie excitedly interrupted: 'Princess has a boyfriend!' causing Katie to reply: 'I know, Ed. He's alright actually.' Describing their relationship, she continued: 'I watch them, and they argue, then they laugh. They argue like proper little teenagers. 'They're both like jealous of each other and it's like, "Oh shut up you two!" They are funny together, they're like a little married couple.' Katie then spoke about her parenting rules for the couple, saying she was 'easygoing' because she remembers how she was at their age. However, Princess' dad Peter has admitted he was 'struggling' with the news that his daughter was dating and told Woman magazine: 'I'm not happy about this at all. I'm struggling beyond belief, but that's life. We've had many chats. I have very strict rules in my house.' Despite Katie making her name, and her millions, as a reality television star it was recently reported that daughter Princess isn't quite so impressed by her mother's star quality because she will not feature on her forthcoming ITV show. MailOnline revealed that Katie will not appear on the fly-on-the-wall programme which will see influencer Princess become a celebrity in her own right but her dad Peter, step-mum Emily and older brother Junior are all to have parts in the series. The programme will follow her work and home life as she prepares to reach the milestone age and last month, the popular teenager was spotted with a camera crew outside the London offices of hair styling brand GHD. A television insider told MailOnline: 'Katie will not be in Princess's show, the decision has been made and it's final. 'Princess loves her mum, and they have a great relationship, but the show is all about her work and home life. 'Television bosses were adamant that nothing was to be 'staged' to include Katie as it would not be a real and truthful insight into her life.' Peter, who shot to fame in the noughties with his hit Mysterious Girl, has brought Junior and Princess up along with wife Emily, 35, with whom he has three children, Amelia, 11, eight-year-old Theo and daughter Arabella, who was born in April 2025. Meanwhile, Katie has son Harvey from her relationship with footballer Dwight Yorke as well as Jett, 12, and Bunny, 11, from her marriage to Kieran Hayler.

ALEX BRUMMER: Treasury is a hurdle for growth

Britain has an overload of budgetary data. As the IMF noted in its recent annual inspection, too frequent fiscal events mean constant policy changes to meet targets. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is victim of her own rules in her determination not to be Liz Truss, who ruined the UK's reputation for probity. The rush to get on top of borrowing and debt was responsible for the ill-fated attack on winter fuel payments which is being reversed. Similarly, the Government is now under pressure from the backbenches to pull back on welfare reforms, introduced in the spring statement. The latest public sector borrowing data shows that in the first two months of the current financial year borrowing is not far off target. At £37.7billion it was less than the Office for Budget Responsibility predicted. It would be terrific if one could say this is down to growing GDP. Reality is that Reeves swingeing increase to employers' national insurance contributions brought in 22 per cent more to the Government coffers in May than a year earlier. Early months of the year often give a misleading reading. Tax receipts are boosted by the timing of capital gains payments. Spending by government departments has yet to ramp up. The full impact of the Government's interest rate bill is not felt. It is too soon for anyone in Whitehall to predict victory. The corollary of the stabilised public finances is May retail sales. The slump is a result of higher shop prices and rising uncertainty about jobs. The real worry for a government backing a growth agenda is that it is not happening. The just-published public spending review and infrastructure plans show that capital spending will climb to a peak of 3.9 per cent of output by 2027-28 but then fall back. It is unlikely to produce the transformation that Labour wants before the next election. The Treasury is spellbound by the public finances. That reflects a history of crisis management dating back to the 1976 sterling collapse and refreshed by the 2008 great financial crisis and the Truss episode. I recall during the banking crisis being called by a senior Treasury official who cautioned against big bailouts because it might trigger a run on the pound. The growth agenda doesn't sit easily at the Treasury. The Department for Business ought to be an expansion engine. It is hampered by a reputation as a parking space for sub-octane Cabinet ministers. Incumbent Jonathan Reynolds is no more than a cypher for Downing Street where real polices are set. The long delays in launching an industrial-tech strategy are a case in point. One must reach back to the Harold Wilson government of the 1960s to find a model for industrial innovation with the Department of Economic Affairs headed by George Brown. It eventually collapsed in a heap like its heavy drinking founder. A growth agenda, building on science, tech and AI excellence, needs a powerhouse department of growth and secretary of state capable of resisting Treasury orthodoxy. That person may not exist in a Labour government bereft of commercial experience and top-notch economic thinkers. Andy Burnham, in exile in Manchester, shows signs of the kind of bravery required. That's probably why political rivals would prefer he were not empowered.
